Some of my favorite authors contributed to the short stories here, and it was quite enjoyable. The Kindle formatting was a little dodgy, in that there were multiple link errors when trying to navigate. If you read from beginning to end, rather than skipping to authors, it is fine.

It was well written and I love stories aboutIreland.

I bought this book after I read a library copy. It was that good. A keeper.

nice mix of authors, classic and modern. Father Greeley's own inclusion was up to expectations. This genre is addictive

Emerald Magic edited by Andrew M. Greeley- This anthology was released in February of 2004 and published by Tor. This anthology covers all things fantastical about Irish history and stories. There are fifteen short stories written by Diane Duane, Tanith Lee, Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple, Judith Tarr, Elizabeth Haydon, Charles de Lint, Ray Bradbury, Andrew M. Greeley, Jane Lindskold, Fred Saberhagen, Peter Tremayne, Cecilia Dart-Thornton, L. E. Modesitt, Jr., Jacqueline Cary, and Morgan Llywelyn. The anthology is broken up into two parts, "The Little People" and "Literary Fantastics". The stories within have something to do with Irish fantasy and horror."Introduction" by Andrew M. Greeley- This is pretty much just a basic introduction with hyping up the upcoming stories and gives some basic background on the anthology. However, it contains some background on some of the myths and legends that the Irish people have. It is also a little confusing at times, mostly due to me having little to know background in such things."Herself" by Diane Duane- This story is about a leprechaun found murdered and discovering what did the act.Criticisms:1) Huh? The story started out interesting enough. A mortal having a friendly conversation with a leprechaun, then finding out he was murdered the next day. That would have been a great idea. However, the story soon turned into a confusing, fast paced mess of references and actions. I was lost and still scratching my head.2) Political Messages. I'm not fond of anything political, at all. So when things like jobs, O-Zone problems, and others come up I'm almost instantly turned off by it. I don't have a problem with it being a 'hidden message' but blatant messages I find extremely annoying, no matter what they are.Praises:1) Interaction. I really likes how the mythical creatures like leprechaun's and banshee's evolved into the present day. Just reading about how a Leprechaun hates Nike just brought a smile to my face. It was really interesting to say the least.2) Murder Mystery. Although the plot did get a little fuzzy and hard to follow, I still really enjoyed the idea. Finding out what was causing a series of Leprechaun murders was surprisingly fun.Overall: 3/5Thoughts: While not the best story, it does have its moments. Aside from my personal issue with issues, I did have a good time reading it up until it got confusing and rushed."Speir-Bhan" by Tanith Lee- This story is about a woman fulfilling her great grandfather's quest to kill three human-fox like beings.Criticisms:1) Awkward. This story just felt awkward to me. It could have been the idea of the main characters great grandfather's scenes and the dream sequences with him in it or it could have been the awkward beginning. But something felt odd and weird.Praises:1) Speir-Bhan. I did like this character. The Speir-Bhan is a muse-like being and her appearance to the main character was kind of interesting and fun. I would say that this is another case of how interesting it is to see fantasy beings interacting with present day reality.Overall: 3/5Thoughts: I really have nothing to say about this story other than a shoulder shrug. It was just okay. It has a few interesting moments but other than those, everything else was just okay. Not to mention that for some reason the story just felt awkward at times. Not really sure why, but something was just odd."Troubles" by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple- This story is about a deal gone wrong between two creatures.Criticisms:1) What? This story is very hard to follow. Everything that is going on is explained, but the way it's explained left me scratching my head. Also, it would have helped if there was some context to everything that was happening.2) Short. It's too short. Some stories can pull off short lengths, but this one just suffers from it. There wasn't enough time to build up the characters and the plot. Instead we just are given blurbs about what's going on.Praises:1) Descriptions. The descriptions seemed to be what this story focuses on and for the most part they are good.Overall: 1/5Thoughts: This story is just a mess of things. The characters weren't developed enough to like them and the plot was just confusing. A little snippet of context of what is going on would have been nice. Leaving a short story clouded in mystery that never will be explained is not a good idea. The main problem has to be how short it is. If it was longer, it may have been more enjoyable."The Hermit and the Sidhe" by Judith Tarr- This story is about a religious crusade against the folklore and rituals that the Irish people have.Criticisms:1) Jumping. There isn't a better way to explain this issue. The problem is that during a few scenes, things jumped around and were hard to follow. However, it wasn't a huge issue.Praises:1) Idea. I really liked the idea behind this story. Having a religious crusade against old-world beliefs was an interesting and engaging idea.2) Characters. I really enjoyed the two main characters of the Hermit and Father Timothy. With the Hermit you have this man who is on the borderline of becoming a devote Catholic, but has doubts. It was an interesting look into his psyche. With Father Timothy you have a man who sees evil in everything that isn't covered in Catholic doctrine. It was interesting to see how far can someone fall into their beliefs.Overall: 4/5Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story. Aside from the 'jumping' scenes, everything was great. I liked the war between the two 'faiths', the characters wonderful, and it was easy to understand."The Merrow" by Elizabeth Haydon- This story is about a family coping with a blight. After the son finds a cap his father has hidden in the woods, he learns something about his mother. Something he's not sure if he should tell her.Criticisms:NonePraises:1) Interesting. Everything about this story held my interest. The characters were great, the plot was simple, and the pacing was perfect.2) Simple. This is what makes a good story, simplicity. It was easy to read, easy to understand, and easy to follow.Overall: 5/5Thoughts: I really liked this story mostly due to it being so easy to understand and follow. The characters were wonderful and the plot had a lot of heart. It just was very enjoyable."The Butter Spirit's Tithe" by Charles de Lint- This story is about a traveling musician and his past run in of a butter spirit. After a curse is laid upon the musician, Conn, is friend Miki decides to make a plan to free him of it.Criticism:1) The End. I did not care for the ending at all. The explanation of what Miki's plan was to free Conn of this curse just didn't feel right. Then it ended on a sappy note.Praises:1) Dark. The story had a fairly dark tone to it, darker than I would have expected. Having Conn's soul being forfeit to this Grey Man and seeing what it does was good in all the right ways.2) Simple. Another simple story. It was fairly easy to follow and understand, and because of this, it was very enjoyable.Overall: 4/5Thoughts: This was a fairly good story, with not much going against it. Sure I felt that the ending didn't work, but other than that it was enjoyable. The tone took a dark turn that I didn't really expect and I'm glad that it worked so well."Banshee" by Ray Bradbury- This story is about a screenwriter taking a screenplay to his friend to go over it. However, they start hearing wails and moans in the wind and the screenwriter goes out to check what it was.Criticisms:1) Spastic. Things happen at a rapid, frantic pace. The dialogue goes by way too fast and because of this, it was hard to follow what is going on.2) Confusing. This ties in with the spastic pacing. Due to the breakneck speed of dialogue, actions, and everything, the story became a confusing and frustrating mess.Praises:1) Idea. The idea was very interesting. However for whatever reason, the spastic, breakneck pace of the story didn't allow for enough time to really develop the story. But what I've seen, it would have been very good.Overall: 2/5Thoughts: The best way to describe this story is one word, spastic. Everything as this 'boom, boom, boom' feel to it. Things happen one right after another with no time to breath. Because if this, the interesting premise really suffers."Peace in Heaven?" by Andrew M. Greeley- This story is about two couples talking of a past war in Heaven and how the two parties should reconcile.Criticisms:1) Exposition. This is an odd problem with the story. At times there seems to be too much being told, but in the next paragraph things are so vague and distant that there needs to be some exposition.2) Perspective. The way this story was told was just weird. It had an almost first-person perspective during half of the scenes, but changed into third-person right after. What exactly is the perspective of this story? A hybrid between the two or something else? But realistically, it does not work.Praises:1) Short. At least this story was short.Overall: 1/5Thoughts: I honestly could not find anything worth talking about that was stand-out good. Sure the story wasn't all bad, there were moments of mediocrity and semi-interest, but nothing stood-out enough to mention. But otherwise, this story was bad. The perspective issue becomes annoying quickly with the third-person actions having a first-person view is awkward. Then you have the need for less and more exposition However, there is more issues with this story. The characters are annoying and I couldn't get into their mindsets. I just didn't enjoy this story at all."The Lady in Grey" by Jane Lindskold- This story is about an Irish revolutionary who is fearless until the death of someone close to her. Then all her fears and past mistakes come flooding back.Criticisms:1) Boring. This story is incredibly boring and slow. However, it never seems like it until you put the story down. There is one main reason this story is so boring and that's the:2) Characters. Maud and Willie are just bland and uninteresting. While they did feel real and three-dimensional, they never really clicked with me. They were just uninteresting and everything they did bored me to tears. Also, this story is built around their relationship, a relationship that I could not (and did not) by for one second.Praises:1) Premise. Even though the story was a little boring and the characters bland, the premise of having this woman's past troubling her was interesting. But due to the poorness of the characters, the promising premise suffers.Overall: 2/5Thoughts: "The Lady in Grey" was just a promising premise that failed due to the lackluster characters and a slow, plodding plot."A Drop of Something Special in the Blood" by Fred Saberhagen- This story is a fictional inspiration behind Bram Stoker's Dracula.Criticisms:1) Plot Progression. I don't know how else to say this other than the way the story moved forward seemed odd. When you first start reading, Stoker is visiting a doctor in Paris to find out what is wrong with him and these delusions he is having. However, when Stoker meets this doctor, the story kind of forgets that in place of this girl, the same girl Stoker is seeing in his 'dreams'. It just felt weird seeing how the one plot thread was pretty much dropped, and another taken up for the middle part, only to be replaced with the starting thread.2) Ending. The ending was very anti-climactic and sudden. It just comes out of no where with no real build up except for Stoker having repeat visits by the girl. But I wouldn't call that build up, more like quick little character development scenes.Praises:1) Inspiration. While I am not a huge fan of fictional inspiration stories, this one seemed to work. It had a bit of the same feel of Dracula, except on a smaller scale. Also, you see little snippets of things that are in Dracula that are replicated, which was interesting.2) Pace. The pacing was just right. Fast enough that the story didn't get bogged down in useless exposition and slow enough that you can appreciate and understand what is happening.Overall: 3/5Thoughts: This story was just average. Nothing really stood out and what did only barely stood out. It's a fairly good fictional inspiration story behind Dracula but the sudden ending and odd plot shifting really just bring it back down to the mediocre level."For the Blood is the Life" by Peter Tremayne- This story is about a doctor being hired on to an entertainment company to make insurance checks on potential stars. After one patient dies and the body turns up missing, things start to get a little frightening for the doctor.Criticisms:1) Beginning. I don't know why, but the beginning of the story bothered me. For one thing, it was utterly predictable, yet that's not the reason. It could have been that the pacing was slow, but that wasn't it either. The reason the beginning was so poor is probably a combination of the two along with it just playing the story straight. Something just didn't work.2) Predictable. While it was easy to see where the story was going to go in the beginning, as the story continued you knew exactly where it was going. As soon as the dead girl goes missing, the doctor's sister getting a check up, and the sister's past medical condition (which was never explicitly mentioned what it was until the end) were all mentioned, it was easy to connect the dots. A little mystery would have been nice.Praises:1) Premise. Yet another story with an interesting premise. I did like the whole idea behind why the company had to hire a doctor and some of the other things that happen late in the story. However, it become too predictable and the whole idea and premise suffered.2) The Ending. While it was predictable, the ending still was a little creepy. It had a nice twist on the whole myth behind the story and there was some interesting imagery described. The last nine or ten pages should just have been the story in a nutshell.Overall: 3/5Thoughts: Yet another mediocre and average story. It wasn't terrible, just really predictable."Long the Clouds Are Over Me Tonight" by Cecilia Dart-Thornton- This story is about Oisin, the last of the Fianna returning to Ireland from the Land of Youth called Tír na Nóg.Criticisms:1) Dialogue. For the most part, the dialogue was hard to understand. It was easy to comprehend what was happening, but hard to understand what was being said. This is due to a lot of references and an 'old-time-like' way to say things.Praises:1) Descriptions. The descriptions of the landscape were really vivid. You could easily picture some of these places in your mind, without much thought.2) Myth. I really liked how this story actually felt like it was a myth. While some of the dialogue was hard to understand, it does fit well with the overall feel.Overall: 4/5Thoughts: The story was pretty good. Aside from the odd dialogue, the story had a nice mythological feel to it."The Swan Pilot" by L. E. Modesitt, Jr.- This story is about a spaceship captain on his way to some space-station, only to be waylaid by images called interludes which can kill the pilot.Criticisms:1) Techno-Babble. I absolutely hate techno-babble that isn't explained. I hate it mostly due to being utterly and totally lost most of the time. This story is full of it, thus causing me to be as confused as never before.2) Confusing. This does tie into the techno-babble problem, the story is confusing. Towards the last three pages, I just then started to understand what was happening and I have to say, it was interesting. Too bad that nothing was explained thus hurting the overall appeal of the story.Praises:1) Premise. Yet another story was an interesting premise. The only problem is how confusing the whole techno-babble aspect is. If there was slightly less, the story would have been more than excellent.2) Interludes. After I figured out what was going on towards the end, I really liked the idea of the interludes. The dream-like world that a pilot sees was just plain interesting. Also, how the Irish myths and tales are included into these dream-like worlds was an interesting and fascinating way to include the folklore.Overall: 3/5Thoughts: This is more of a biased review. I loathe techno-babble, however I can stand having a little. But here there is just so much to take in and understand what is happening that it really ruins the story. However, if you're a fan of science-fiction, this would be a fun story."The Isle of Women" by Jacqueline Carey- This story is about an island of women who, after a ship of seventeen men land, possess the men into falling in love with them.Criticisms:1) Long. This story was definitely longer than it should have been. There were times when things just dragged on.2) Ending. The last actions of the story were a little hard to follow. In fact, I had to re-read a certain paragraph to figure out who grabs the thread. It just wasn't very clear at first.Praises:1) Mythological Feel. Yet another story with a mythological feel to it. I really enjoy these types of stories and this one was an enjoyable story that you could find in Greek or Roman mythology.2) Cébha. She was a pretty interesting character. You could see the beginnings of a war within herself between her love for her Queen and her love for Diurán,Overall: 3/5Thoughts: Yet another average story. While I did like this a little better, it was way too long. For the most part the characters were fairly shallow, Cébha being just a little more bearable. Other than that, nothing else stood out, and it was just another average and okay story."The Cat With No Name" by Morgan Llywelyn- This story is about a lonely little girl who befriends a cat.Criticisms:None.Praises:1) Emotional. This story was emotionally driven, and it hit in all the right ways. It's sad, it's really sad. The relationship between the girl and the cat is just so good that you see every emotion between them. Also, the girl's family life is sad and depressing, but everything works.2) Unpredictable. When I started reading this story I thought something was about to happen with the cat, and I was right. But not in the way something was going to happen. Instead the story went in a different, unexpected direction.Overall: 5/5Thoughts: This was probably the best story in this whole anthology for one reason and one reason alone, it has an emotional impact. This was the only story to really elicit an emotional response from me and I just loved every second of it.OVERALL AVERAGE ANTHOLOGY: 3/5Final Thoughts:Emerald Magic was a pretty good anthology. It had a wonderful mix of stories. With some being just great and others being unbearable, this is the kind of anthology you want. Different kinds of people will like different kinds of stories, and this is where Emerald Magic succeeds. It has something for everyone. However, I do have to say that a lot of the stories were just average at best. While average is still a good read, there is just too many that I found average to be worrisome. I still did find this anthology well worth a read, but I found myself frustrated with how mediocre and okay a lot of these stories were. However, I will recommend picking it up because there is something for everyone.Stories Worth Reading:1) "The Merrow" by Elizabeth Haydon2) "The Cat With No Name" by Morgan LlywelynStories Best Avoided:1) "Peace in Heaven?" by Andrew M. Greeley2) "Troubles" by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple

Emerald Magic: Great Tales of Irish Fantasy edited by Andrew Greeley is an anthology that features tales steeped in Irish folklore. The two things about an anthology I like most are the fact that you get a variety of different voices telling the stories, and there are a variety of stories to be told. Those two things certainly apply here as there are fifteen different stories in this anthology. As can be expected, some are better than others but the variety certainly helps. Here are my thoughts on the individual stories.1 - Herself by Dianne Duane - I found this tale to be mostly build-up with very little in terms of follow through. The ending seemed rushed. It actually came across like this story wanted to be a novella but instead was turned into a short story. 2 out of 5.2 - Speir-Bhan by Tanith Lee - Average story. Solid writing and decent dialogue, but I had a hard time connecting with the characters. Some of their decisions and actions didn't seem to make a lot of sense at times. 3 out of 5.3 - Troubles by Jane Yolen and Adam Stemple - A short short-story. Nothing with this story really worked for me aside from the descriptions. The rest of the story, and characters, was lost on me. 1 out of 5.4 - The Hermit and the Sidhe by Judith Tarr - I liked this one. It had a really tight flow, everything made logical sense and the characters were interesting. Also, it never really tried to be more than what it is. Just an enjoyable story. 4 out of 5.5 - The Merrow by Elizabeth Haydon - Interesting story, which was obviously backed by much heritage. I really liked the ending as it seemed to really bring the story full circle. Good writing, not a lot of useless information. 4 out of 5.6 - The Butter Spirit's Tithe by Charles de Lint - This one seemed longer than it really needed to be. To me, this one dragged on, and on. Then, when the ending was there it was surprising and very sudden. The flow was disjointed and didn't sit right with me. 2 out of 5.7 - Banshee by Ray Bradbury - I really liked the start of this story, and then it took a left turn and lost me. It actually felt like the author tried too hard and it disrupted the flow that the author had established. 2 out of 5.8 - Peace in Heaven? By Andrew M. Greeley - A short to the point story. It gets the information out there and there is no pomp and circumstances surrounding it. The writing is pretty good and the dialogue fits well with the zeitgeist of the story. It didn't blow me away, but it was a decent read. 3 out of 5.9 - The Lady in Grey by Jane Lindskold - A story with a bit of mystery surrounding it. Oviously a more traditional folk-ish type story. I really disliked how the author chose to switch perspective. It was very distracting and really took away from the flow of the story. 2 out of 5.10 - A Drop of Something Special in the Blood by Fred Saberhagen - Just an average story here. Nothing really stood out to me (positive or negative). It felt like it was just going through the motions and not taking any chances. It just was. 3 out of 5.11 - For the Blood is the Life by Peter Tremayne - When I realized what this story was going to be about I think I groaned and said "Ugh.". I understand this is a folk-ish, lore ridden, type anthology, but this story just felt so fake and stuff it down your throat type style. It just didn't work for me. 1 out of 5.12 - Long the Clouds are over me tonight by Cecilia Dart-Thornton - Really enjoyed this story. It could very well be my favorite of the anthology. It had both a folklore-ish feel to it, but a modern ring to it as well. A pleasant mix with good solid writing. 4 out of 5.13 - The Swan Pilot by L.E. Modesitt Jr. - On the shorter side of stories. It was okay, but with a few of the other stories nothing really special that stood out and made me want to go and find more by this author. Solid writing and decent characters, but there seemed to be something missing. 3 out of 5.14 - The Isle of Women by Jacqueline Carey - Another story that seemed a little long in the teeth. If it were shortened by about5 pages or so it would have made for a nice compact story. As it was, the actual story seems to drift a little. Sometimes more is not always better. 2 out of 5.15 - The Cat with no Name by Morgan Llywelyn - A nice short intimate story. This one had near perfect flow and execution. This story felt different than a lot of the other stories and I can't really put my finger on it. But, I can say I enjoyed it. 4 out of 5.I can certainly sense, and respect, the traditions and heritage of some of these tales. It is quite evident that some of these tales have been told for many ages. Of course some of the writing is better than others. There seemed to be quite a few first person stories as well. So, for those who do not like first person stories as much as third person be aware of that. All in all I think this is an average anthology, but for someone looking for stories dealing strictly with the Irish then this is the perfect book. For others, it may be hit or miss.

Like all collections I liked some stories better than others, and some not at all.My favourite was the woman who was a merrow, which in Scotland is called a selkie - a seal-person who has changed into a woman. This story had a genuine voice and characters we could empathise with, set at the time of the Famine so there was a background of looming dread.A sprite who malevolently followed a musician around, occasionally breaking all his guitar strings and so on, was also good. Some of the other stories were too much of horror for me, or a bit overly ridiculous, though the authors had put a good deal of work into researching and writing the detail of fairy folks.Everyone's tastes will differ and it is better to have the old legends remembered and retold in new form, than to have them lost. I did wish that even one writer had been an Irish person, but you can't have everything

Some of the things it says is a little bit frightening, though. Like where it talks about the punishment of the fallen angels. Also, Enoch describes what hell looks like. It scared the heck out of me when I read it. Considered the Book of Enoch is not included within the Holy Bible I am not sure it is completely accurate. The Secrets of the Book of Enoch says that the souls of animals will accuse a man on the judgment day if he had treated that animal badly.

A fascinating yet frightening look behind the scenes in heaven, it is a book handed down to Methusaleh by his father Enoch before the Flood and yes, angels could write and yes, Enoch was a scribe. It's intention is to be a warning to generations to come. It explains judgement on various generations and the form thereof as well as God's intolerance to sin and disobedience which started with the fall of Angels and their destiny. It explains situations we, as Christians, often ponder on. Here we find a lot of answers, and it is a shame that this book is not better known or read by God fearing Christians. I highly recommend it, very appropriate for these last days.

This book helped me to understand parts of the Bible that were sometimes unclear, and for me it brought a whole knew understanding to what was happening in the Old Testament and brought the New testament up to modern times and what is going on in the world today, but mostly it helped me to understand why there is so much hatred for GOD, Israel and America at this time.

This book isn't for everyone. It's for those seekers who know that there is more to the Bible than what is being taught. But if you're the kind of person who holds on to every word your pastor says as if it's law, then this book isn't for you.

This was one of the best books I have ever read! The book of Enoch was once loved and considered just as valid as any other book of the Bible. The era in which Enoch was given is the origin of many quotes given by the prophets, by Y'shua and his apostles as well that are found throughout scripture. It gives full explanation of the 'giants' (only slightly mentioned in Genesis and the origin of evil spirits, and further gives the history of fallen angels. The book of Enoch, the earliest in ancient times, yields more prophecy of any other book and takes you on a ride from his day, through the flood, to the Messiah and onward to the end of days...all in one book. And why was it taken out of circulation?...because when it was discovered it transgressed the doctrines of Jew and Gentile alike.

This appears to be a print on demand copy of the book on Enoch because the date of publish was about 3 days before I received it in the mail. There is no commentary. The book is littered with typos, missing or incorrect words and is horribly formatted with pages containing widows and orphans and verse numbers floating in the middle of paragraphs. Sentences end without periods, then continue on the next line... what a mess. The cover has a nice soft touch velvet feel, but the cover text looks like it was output on a dot matrix printer back in 1989.Pretty disappointed with this copy and I'm only keeping it because I intend to highlight and write notes all over it, so I really don't care that much about appearances.

I've read this book twice online but wanted one I could have in my hands. The cover is amazing; it's almost like suede leather and gives that antique look which is so appropriate. No serious Bible student should be without this amazing book. I've found literally dozens of verses that are directly quoted in new testament, not just the obvious two.

The Ancient of Days has fashioned a well-orchestrated creation. Everything from humans to angles to luminaries to animals have a purpose, a calling. But some in the creation choose not to prescribe to their appointed roles.Enoch is blessed and given beforehand knowledge of God’s plan for the redemption of His sheep and the punishment of the rebellious. This book is not an easy read. I searched outside sources to help me understand what was being described in some of the visions given. Words in some sections of the book have double meanings.

Original 08/31/13Great book that is well organized. Tons of useful information for all the hikes. Hike difficulty ratings are fairly accurate.Update 05/21/14My friend and I have now done about 15 hikes in this book so I thought I'd provide an update. We map all the hikes using MapMyRun app. Recently we realized the total trail mileage per hike is often accurate but the intermediate mileage from point A to point B along the trail is frequently wrong. Recommend you match up the book diagram to the gps tracking diagram on your cell phone to see if you miss a turn or not.Best trails in order are below. In general all the best trails seem to be south of STL. Highly recommend all the ones below for the fall. Pictures with changing leaf colors were spectacular from the lookout points.1. Green Rock Trail2. Pickle Springs Natural Area - Trail Through Time3. Pere Marquette State Park4. Hawn State Park

This is our go-to book for choosing hikes within the St. Louis area. Originally checked it out from the library and used it so often we bought the updated version on Amazon. There are a variety of hikes listed for hikers of all skill level. Makes you appreciate all the beauty this area has to offerUPDATE: I've now owned this book for a bit and have had a chance to really utilize it. The descriptions for the hikes are pretty accurate considering when the last update was and now. I have found a few of the areas to have additional hikes or some of the trails that once had generic names have been named. These are minor details though. Directions listed to get to the trailheads, parks, natural areas and conservation areas are accurate. In some cases, they are better to use than your GPS.I like to make notes after I hike a trail or an area, so I do wish there was a blank page or two included with each chapter so that trail and area notes could be made. In addition, when the book is updated, it would be great to have a website or something online linked to the book.I still consider this the best hiking book for the St. Louis and surrounding areas. If you live in the STL area and love hiking, this is a must have for your collection or anyone you know who loves to hike. It's given me an appreciation for where I live and what the area has to offer. Please note, I have updated my star rating to a 4 from a 5 due to some of the things I wish were different about the book.

We have used the older version of this book many times over the years. We misplaced it, and I got my husband this new edition for Christmas. I'm sure this one will get lots of use as well.

Lots of the right kind of details.

This book is a great resource for those in the Saint Louis area. I've been hiking around this area for 15-20 years and still hadn't known about many of the hikes listed in this guide. It covers all the classic spots around here, but has some more obscure ones too. Of course, the 60 miles thing is a bit of a stretch, but most of the further ones are well worth the drive. Best regional hiking resource I've found.

If you live in the St. Louis area and enjoying hiking, this is a must-have book. Very useful tips about various trails (terrain, difficulty, maps, views, seasonality, etc.). I've enjoyed a lot of trails that I never would have known about without this book. Highly recommend!

A wonderful list of local hikes for every skill level, with detailed notes and trail maps

This is a great book for novice hikers. We've already used it to find some great new trails to explore around Missouri. The author does a good job outlining the difficulty of trails and things to look out for. I'd recommend if you're looking to explore the area's scenery.

As a young girl, I did not have a strong education in Judaism. I tend to be a cynic. In other words, if I don't see and understand it, I may reject it. . I have had many questions and The Wondering Jew helped to answer many of those questions. I shared it with my daughter and teen-age granddaughter who were about the celebrate the High Holidays with little knowledge of what they were truly celebrating. I thank Ellen Brazer for enlightening us.The book was written in language that was informal with references and quotes that were relevant for me. I learned, I pondered, and there are still questions in my mind, but I hope to hear Ms Brazer speak at a Book & Author event to learn even more. I suggest that people who want to learn more about Jewish dogma and traditions, read this book.

I have read Ellen's other books and enjoyed them. When I saw she had published this book I decided to read it and am glad I did. She describes her personal journey in a serious but light hearted way. She gives the reader an abbreviated history of the Jewish people that would be interesting to all faiths. I enjoyed this book and it just reaffirms the pride I have in being Jewish. Thanks Ellen!

When you read the paragraph afforded you by Amazon's surprise me section it gives you the impression she has delved into other religions and quotes her kids as thinking this won't last long. BUT the book focus's on the politics of isreal.the laws of Judaism and the holocaust. It was not a story of a woman's searching.but more a series of lectures on what she thought. Z

The Wondering Jew provides a beautiful journey into learning about Judaism and establishing a connection with both the religion and the author. The book provides a personal insight into the author's life and commitment to her religion. One doesn't have to be Jewish to understand the author's message. The book is honest and reveals the soul of the author. I highly recommend this book. It will enlighten your spirituality on so many different levels. Ellen Brazer makes the Jewish holidays stand out and become so much more memorable.

Ellen Brazer has written an account of her journey into Judaism that is intelligent, scholarly and yet infinitely approachable. The personal and conversational tone of her writing is at once instructive and comforting. Ms. Brazer opens mindful gateways to the reader- holding us close to accompany her on her journey with ample room to explore ones own religious beliefs. Her voice is the most charming of teachers.

I enjoyed Ellen Brazers writing style and I think the book showed an intriguing presentation of Jewish thought

This an excellent read. The outline of the bible and personal perspectives put a new light on a very important story. Ellen makes the read extremely enjoyable and you even learn when you are not expecting.

very interesting book, highly recommend

I hadn't paid attention to the theme of Best Women's Erotica, until I'd read a few stories and decided to look and see what it was—getting off in a dressing room, being the subject of voyeurism in a car—it's all about the edge that comes when you just might get caught doing something filthy. If Bravo's "Below Deck" was more like Calliope Bloom's "O Captain! My Captain," I might be more inclined to watch it, and the male protagonist of Rosie Beth Randall's "Mark" could teach Christian Grey a thing or two. But the thing I loved most about these stories is that the sheroes weren't all perfect femmebots. There are scars, booty, an extra few pounds sometimes, and not everyone's 20 with storebought boobs. If you're tired of badly written porn masquerading as erotica, this is the perfect book for you. And it's available as an ebook, for easy commuting reading if you feel like taking your own little risk. . . .

Rachel Kramer Bussel has done it again. In her newest book, Best Women’s Erotica of the Year, Volume 4, she introduces the theme of outsiders and risk, and this collection of diverse erotic stories hits the mark. This themed lens provides us with a unique backdrop and introduces us to ‘every woman.’ Yes, these are the women not marketed by Hollywood or a PR firm. What I like best about this volume is how each story introduces us to characters who push us, the readers, to consider how individual and complex our experience of sex is. Here are several of the stories that impacted me.Alessandra Torre allows us to experience the hotness of other people having sex in the dressing room next door. She spurs us on to enjoy the invitation it evokes. A public/private space ignites imagination and lust in “The Dressing Room.”“Aftershock” by Jo Henny Wolfe addresses the power and depth of sexual connection in the face of a natural catastrophe. Alone, the main character struggles with a language barrier. The volatile situation allows her to draw on the strength of past coupling to make this enormous risk workable.Tamara Lush moves us down the road of life development to the mid-life stage in “Words with Benefits.” She introduces hook-ups within the mode of what mid-lifers do for fun but adds the sexy twist. A real component of this story is having “miles on the tires.” Life experience allows a deep connection and one that combines the personal hobbies with hidden and untouched desires.“Protest of Passion” by Eliza David drops us in the life of two women positioned on opposite sides of an issue and tackling their life passions in different ways. Add attraction to the mix of risky elements in their job and neighborhood and watch lusty sex ignite.Calliope Bloom uses the backdrop of Halloween costumes and parties to stage outsiders involved in risk. She sets a situation that ups the ante on her main character and moves the story along by providing surprises and choices. “O Captain! My Captain!” hits all the right tones and places. These stories celebrate strength. Characters are in the middle of risking themselves for what they want, sharing vulnerability yet working through it and moving forward. Sex allows us the opportunity to grow, and these stories represent examples of how that can happen.Once a sex-educator, always the sex-educator. I recommend this book as part of your bibliotherapy. Readers, you owe it to yourself to see what sex-positive writing can do for your entertainment and enjoyment. Whether in learning mode, fantasy mode or if you need a little psychological edge to get you where you want to go, this book can provide it. Sex is an integral part of life, and these stories represent that with their beauty, simplicity or complexity in relationships highlighting the settings and situations. And last, the exciting part, you are reading high quality literary erotic fiction. Kudos to Rachel Kramer Bussel for another stellar publication.

Sometimes I enjoy erotica simply for the sake that it's so foreign from my own life, that it offers a complete escape. And you'll definitely find stories in here with such unique scenarios, they would be difficult/impossible to replicate. (You'll also find a diverse set of characters that come alive in a matter of pages. I saw myself in some of them, and enjoyed the experiences of others like I would as if they were a good friend telling me about the incredible night they had over coffee the next morning.)But the erotica I enjoy most are well-written stories that give me new naughty ideas I can try out for myself. As a queer/pansexual switchy individual, let's just say I got a lot out of this book. I was especially relieved to find powerful dominant femmes in more than one story. The theme of the collection is Outsiders and Risk and each writer takes the theme in a new direction. For me, one of the pleasures of reading the book is waiting for the "risk" to reveal itself. The risks are often a major part of the erotic build-up, kicking these stories into sensual overdrive. In many of the stories, the concept of outsiders manifests through a narrator with a marginalized component in their identity, such as race or disability. The editor always does a good job of creating a refreshingly inclusive anthology, which makes me even more inclined to support the series.
