Marriage of Inconvenience: The Persecution of Ruth and Seretse Khama, by Michael Dutfield

In 1948, a young white English woman, Ruth Williams, made headline news all over the world. For she had met, fallen in love with and married Seretse Khama, an African prince and heir to the chieftainship of a tribe of more than 100,000 people - the Bamangwato. At first, the marriage was no more welcome in Africa than in government circles in Whitehall. Within a year of their wedding, the young couple had provoked an astonishing series of events that have never been explained. The British government was determined to prevent Seretse taking his rightful place at the head of his tribe. The Bamangwato, to their credit, accepted the marriage and welcomed Ruth as their queen. Attlee's Labour government embarked on what appeared to be a vendetta against them, robbing Seretse of his birthright and his people of their chief. In the process, Seretse and Ruth were forcibly separated while she awaited the birth of their first child. Now having access to Ministerial telegrams and Cabinet documents, the author tells the full story.

I read this book after being deeply moved by the movie, A UNITED KINGDOM, about the same subject, the government furor and persecution of African chief-to-be Seretse Khama and Ruth Williams, the white Englishwoman who became his wife. The movie was dramatic, infuriating, and inspiring, but the true history of this couple's devoted love and dedication to Seretse's people - meticulously researched and documented, and intelligently described in this book - is even MORE so. It demonstrates the depths of evil politicians will sink to, running roughshod over human decency, truth, and justice, in order to preserve their positions of power, even when they must contradict themselves and subvert the values they claim they're upholding. The book also serves as a cautionary tale for our times, because it's clear throughout the narrative that an ultimately triumphant outcome was only made possible by a competitive press and an informed, engaged, sympathetic British populace who made their outrage felt despite massive attempts to deceive them, so the politicians had to pay attention. In the current world of virtually-monopolistic, corporate-controlled media and largely politically-naive and uninvolved citizens, it's questionable whether even people with the strength of character, enduring love, personal integrity, and dedication to doing what they believed best for their people that Seretse and Ruth possessed, would stand a chance of achieving a just outcome.A gripping true story, told with keen insight, articulate language, and unusual objectivity and fairness to all parties, even while clearly sympathetic to Ruth and Seretse throughout their ordeal. A satisfying read. I liked it better than the movie, but I'm grateful for the movie, because without it, I'd never have even known these people or their story. Ultimately, despite all the prejudices and cold-hearted political machinations of countries bent on preserving domination, the story of Ruth and Seretse Khama shows the power of love to change the course of history.

After watching the movie A United Kingdom, I found this book a lot more thrilling, fascinating and eye opening. It certainly left me with the impression that the author describes what really happened. Of course, the movie could not possibly unfold the complexities of the political dilemma in which the British found themselves in after WW II (and thus rather cheaply depicted them as arrogant heartless somewhat stupid pricks). The author convincingly shows that the British were trying to follow a realpolitik strategy, which in the end they could only lose. The British were in essence blackmailed by South Africa during a time they needed access to the country's gold and uranium, to help pay back the debts accumulated during WW II and to keep up with the nuclear arms race that had just started. The author also provides a succinct summary of the sub regional African history, making the actions of Seretse Khama's local antagonists much clearer and more understandable. What I also liked a lot about the book was that Ruth William appeared to be a much more complex and much stronger personality than in the movie. While it would probably have been beyond the scope of the story, I would still have wanted to read why Seretse Khama decided after all the denigrating mistreatments by the British to stay in the Western camp, instead of following most other frontline states, making Botswana non-aligned or associating with the Eastern block during the cold war.

I loved the book. I was mesmerized by the intertwining of this great love story and the politics of British rule, anti colonial struggle and the genuine love the couple showed for their people. The details on the personalities and their interactions was definitely a central part of the book. The imagery was fantastic and drew me into the scenes almost like I was there in the middle of the emotional and political roller coster. Although I had read a lot about southern African struggles for independence this story was new to me - what a wonderful surprise. Great book of love and history

Such an important centerpiece of World History! Africa mirrors the feelings of bigotry from people worldwide who fight to spread ignorance through domination, yet ultimately lose the battle. The story of a courageous couple, one black and one white, overcame oppression from white bigotry to become a central symbol for Africa's positive future.

This is a very good read about the machinations the British were willing to do in order to gain and hold hegemony in South Africa and the rest of tribal Africa. The film, called United Nation does not tell the complete story, which is not unusual for films, but they really left out lots of significant geopolitical information that Michael Dutfield included. The film is about romance and the book is about the development of nuclear weapons and uranium discovery and mining. The persecution of the couple came about because of the desire of the United States Military to commit massive genocide.

Books shipped from England, and arrived much faster than I thought it would. I know, very well, the story of Seretse and Ruth Khama, but wanted to learn more details about their lives together. I haven't finished it yet, but so far it's a very lovely (and often teary) read. I grew up in a very open-minded family, and I could never wrap my brain around the concept of some people feeling they have a right to tell other people who they can love/marry. The book is well written, and unfortunately, my research revealed that the accomplished author, Micheal Dutfield died in a motorcycle accident in 1995. Dutfield also produced a movie of the same title in 1990 (would love to get my hands on a copy of that). Seretse and Ruth's eldest son is currently the president of Botswana, and the Paramount Chief of the nation's Bamangwato people.

I could not believe the injustice Ruth and Seretse Khama suffered because of a mixed marriage. In the end the two were the victors in other ways. The two of them went on to achieve many good programs and successes in Botswana.

Upgrade: after playing with, enhancing and expanding my new PC-BSD 9.0 system and delving repeatedly back into the Guide to PC-BSD, I have to admit it is more definitive than I initially claimed, it is in fact more helpful than many of my user level Linux references. I recommend this reference.~~PC-BSD is a nice alternative to Linux, offering many of the same features and applications, and adheres to the same philosophy of Open Software (free). But it seems not as well established as Linux nor offers the the variety of distributions as the many mainstream Linux distros. Nonetheless, it's a rock-solid system, and the basis for some very useful offshoots in network and security applications.Consequently, user level documentation is not as widespread or diverse. This text will get you up and running, and serve as a desktop reference, for PC-BSD, a graphical (GUI) desktop system. This book describes the KDE desktop manager (PC-BSD supports Gnome and others, not described), and describes BSD equivalents for package management, mail clients, browsers, and all those applications familiar in MS Windows and Linux. This text is not intended to document the more technical aspects such as BSD programming, server installations, kernel development and the like (even though the distribution install disk offers many of these capabilities). This text is nicely written and presented in the usual manner (overview, install, customizing,..., tuning), providing a general and useful description of what you need to make PC-BSD run and make you happy. I did not find it to be definitive. I did find it to be on the pricey side for what it offers, as I find most of the other BSD references to be; I have no clue why, maybe I shop the wrong sites. My PC-BSD distribution DVD (from OSDisc dot Com, recommended) came with the PC-BSD User Handbook, in PDF format. I found this to be as useful as the Definitive Guide, so you might want to give the Handbook a try first (247 pages). However, if you are an entry level user, or have no Linux background, the Definitive Guide is the way to go. There doesn't seem to be much else out there to choose from, so enjoy what there is.(fwiw: my PC-BSD system runs Firefox, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, built-in firewall and virus software, and a host of Linux applications; I am presently happy with this system, its performance, and security features. Either this Definitive Guide or the Handbook will take you there.)

I'm still reading this book, but what I've read so far I like. Dru has made it easy to follow and understand. If anyone is interested in BSD Operating systems, they might try the PC-BSD, Free-BSD, or similar Operating System. Try this book on for size. I know the more I read the more I like. There's so much the PC-BSD will do, that in itself is enough to go for it. You might go online and download PC-BSD Operating System, commit it to disk, and have it for when you get the book: The Difinitive Guide to PC-BSD. Thanks.John

This is a good book for anyone who is just starting out with PC-BSD. I can't say that it has much in the way of advanced topics, however, it does cover the basics and where to go when you want to take the PC-BSD OS to the next level. I especialy like the section on how to install Free BSD software in PC-BSD, that right there is worth the cover price.

At-a-Boy

This is a beginner's manual for PC-BSD. I did not find any useful information in it. Everything in it was freely available online. So I was disappointed that there was no programming information or more advanced information than just the very basic how to use PC-BSD. I use PC-BSD on my Virtual Machine while I run the Debian Computer Operating System. It works fine; but I like Debian OS more.

Snappsy the Alligator (Did Not Ask to Be in This Book), by Julie Falatko Tim Miller

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2—Snappsy the alligator finds himself in a book he doesn't want to be in. He leads a quiet, simple life, but the narrator (a chicken who likes to dance and throw parties) purposely misinterprets his every move. This is fun for readers but not for the main character. "This is terrible!" Snappsy says. "I'm just hungry! Why is this rude narrator trying to make it seem like I need a nap?" Falatko's debut book demonstrates the power of storytelling through words and pictures. The simple cartoon art is a hoot. The narrator's surprise appearance at the end helps Snappsy realize that it's good to have people in your life who push you out of your comfort zone every once in a while. VERDICT A fun read-aloud.—Tanya Boudreau, Cold Lake Public Library, AB, Canada

This is just such a fun and clever book...Kids will love how it's weird and unpredictable in the funniest ways but still accessible and worth many reads. Kids who are big readers will especially love the interaction with the narrator. The illustrations are fantastic and bright too. Super.

My kids (7 and 9) thought it was hilarious. Though the words are simple, the reader must understand the situation being implied, so it's not for very small children - a bit more sophisticated humor.

I'm a sucker for a clever book, and this one is clever, funny, and has great illustrations.

We are obsessed with Snappsy in our house. OBSESSED. The illustrations alone crack us up. A perfect author/illustrator pairing.

This is a funny book for kids, with a few jokes for us big kids, too. The plot is not terribly complex or deep, but it was a hit with our 5 and 7 year olds. The illustrations are really good and bound to make you smile.Recommended.

This book is so fun! My two-year-old adores it, and personally, I would love to go to one of Snappsy's parties.

Super cute book! I recommend reading it with two readers, one can play the alligator and the other can be the narrator!!!

Sympathy for this bothered reptile...who comes around in the end, like we all do. Applause for Snappsy...and a big toothy grin!

After finishing After, I had to dive right into After We Collided to get more of Tessa and Hardin and this book was just as angsty and full of drama as After! After We Collided picks up right where After finishes and in this book we get both Hardin and Tessa's points of view which was helpful. Watching the pain these two characters go through to try to find their way back to one another had me on edge throughout most of this book. These two had to go through so much and I felt myself wanting to strangle both of these characters multiple times in this book!Every single time I think these two may have finally figured things out, and may finally get a chance at happiness something comes up and things go downhill and quickly, but this time it's Tess that seems to do a lot of the misunderstanding and messing up. She jumps to conclusions over and over again and never gives Hardin time to explain before jumping to the worst case scenario and doing something drastic. Granted, she has her reasons with everything he's done, but she ends up hurting them more than helping them so many times in this book. Hardin really has shown he's willing to try to be a better man and has worked so hard to gain Tessa's trust but she seems to throw it away every time he mispeaks or does one thing wrong, forgetting that everything is so new for Hardin and that the relationship isn't just her, but it's both of them in it together.I really did enjoy the journey that the author took us on in this book and how far we got to see these characters grow so far, but I am want to see things finally start to work out for them and I want to see Tessa start to be more honest with Hardin, especially now that he's doing so much to earn her back and be honest with her! She owes that to him and she can't be keeping secrets from him anymore, it's driving me insane!I will definitely be picking up the next book ASAP and diving right into it, because this series has become an addiction. If you're a lover of the new adult genre and like angst, this is definitely the series for you!

It's pretty bad when the abusive boyfriend is the most likable character in the story, but the wretched girlfriend one ups him repeatedly. I don't think I've ever hated a female character more then the main character in this story, Tess. The book basically consists of her screaming at her boyfriend, Hardin, after promising to give him one more chance. Repeatedly. They have graphic make up sex, and within a page she finds a new reason to scream at him and cry. Rinse, repeat. How many fights can these characters get in before the story ends? I'd tell you to play a drinking game and take a shot every time this happened...but you'd be dead by chapter 7, so don't try it.Granted, this was a One Direction fan fiction so I guess my expectations should have been ever lower then they were. I guess the only people I'd recommend this would be One Direction fans, or someone looking for 50 Shades of Grey starring teenagers. I can't think of anyone else who would be able to stomach it.

I absolutely fell in love with the first book and it left at a cliffhanger that had me jumping immediately to this book. At first I was drawn into the roller coaster that is Tessa and Hardin, but I felt like it was very stretched out. I’m an avid reader of books like these.. the first book is usually the meet up, the second is the heart break and reconciliation, and the last book is usually the comeback and happy ending. At the end of the this book, I didn’t get the same feeling of wanting to jump into the next one. I was surprised, but I was like.. why are there still 2 books? How? I had to read spoilers because I was getting annoyed at the drawn out drama. Come to find out, the characters take a series of turns and I can’t subject myself to more drama and no real reconciliation. SPOILER (KIND OF..) I heard the ending was just thrown in without that sense of relief to the reader that they felt that love and connection and went forward with their lives as a happily ever after. This series could have easily been made into 3 books and left some of the useless drama out if it. I won’t read the rest, but I’ll absolutely watch the movies and hope for a more satisfying ending... with a little less of the unneeded drama. Do yourself a favor and just read the end, but I cant guarantee you’ll feel satisfied with the ending.

These two are just toxic. I really don't see how they can end up together and be healthy for one another. Yes they are young but seriously I've got to add stupid here as well.If you enjoyed book one then you'll enjoy book two. The whiplash on and off of this couple just does my head in.BUT ... Ms Todd does provide doozie cliffies. I had heard of this when it was a FF WIP but I did not ship. Serialised I could see it working.I'm undecided if I'll continue this series. I really want to see how AT pulls off a HEA plus my OCD will play up a treat not finishing a series.

Hardin and Tessa will be the death of me! I swear! I want to smack their imaginary heads together! The back and forth is driving me crazy and I can’t for the life of me see how these two can possibly go on...But there are moments when I know exactly why I’m reading this series and loving it. There are moments when you can feel the passion and deep connection they have. You can almost see them happy forever. I’m diving into book 3 now because I NEED to know what happens, I’m too invested to give up now!
