I live, study and work in the New York Tri-State region and this book is pretty great because the author also lived, worked and studied in the same region. Whats good about that? The Human Development and Expliotation is our region is very diverse and often connects directly with other prominent regions around the globe. The author basically covers alot of legalities, origins, design principles, and field work analysis really well.This was one of the easier to read text in my classes, not because it is written in laymans terms, but he writes the ideas in a clear concise manner and covers alot of material with great efficiency using (the best I've seen in any enviro-engineering text) superb diaghrams, pictures and charts.As a whole I felt the text demystifies alot of what this field is about so I usually recommend it to other non-environmental engineers, planners and designers that I come across in my school and work.The book is expensive but I felt it was one of those few (if any) books you'll ever buy in college that is worth every penny.This one is a keeper!

I have multiple other ".. for dummies" books and love them... So I bought this one, in hopes of getting one that had a little more info on more aspects of a hobby farm - particularly, chickens, pigs and veggie gardens & their needs/care... This book sounded like it would cover all of those things, plus some!I was disappointed when I received it and it didnt really have much info about anything. Practically nothing on pigs, which in my opinion is a more common farm animal than a lot of others that were mentioned more. It talked waaaaay too much about being a good neighbor - it's a good point, but got extremely repetative, the writer was obviously quite bitter about a bad neighbor when writing this!I litterally learned nothing from this book. Don't waste your money!

Learning about the animals helped prevent me from making a mistake in getting them. More maintenance than I have time for at the moment, but then again, that was the purpose of learning about them by buying the book

Well written and informative; excellent overview but still leaves you to do the necessary 'research' should you choose to take the plunge.

I appreciate this book. Grown in a big city and wanting to learn how to live in the country... this book has some important information basic information that I need to understand.

I bought this because I was interested in farming for fiber. The author helps give you an idea of what is involved.The book talks a little about food farming, but mostly about animals.I liked that the author talked about things like how much acerage might be needed, basic laws, and things like why a rain barrel is important.The author also discussed how the new housing development down the road is a problem and causes stress to the animals, and how new neighbors from the city complain about animal noise and smell (happening in my own rural town right now.)The author also discusses types and relative cost of barnes, shelters, feed, etc.If you are interested in fiber farming I recommend Shear Spirit for tales from experienced farmers which really opened my eyes to the hard labor, long hours, and cost of farming.All in all I learned that there really isn't much money to be made in farming unless you can do pretty much EVERYTHING on your own. If you want to keep chickens and grow veggies, this book can help you get started.
