Pearls just keeps getting funnier, and I love the comments between the strips. Although I'd love to have a complete Pearls collection, I've learned to hold off on the smaller books and wait for the Treasuries, since they include the same strips and the comments.Another great cover, by the way, and fun outtake pictures on the inside covers. Is the attractive young lady on the cycle Staci? If she isn't, now we know why Staci left the cartoon version of Pastis.p.s. Hardcore Pearl fans might also wonder if the dude in the door is Emilio.

Can't ever go wrong with Pearls Before Swine. Bought this for my mom's 88th birthday, because, well, why the heck not?P.S. She loves it.

How can you not revere Rat, Pig and the rest of the Stephan Pastis menagerie?Certainly one of the most consistently funny and original comic strips ever. Just unparalleled in its dark edgy humor--always done with a wink and with tongue firmly in cheek.5 stars are not nearly enough

As an endangered species who lives next door to some, ahem, interesting neighbors, I honor Mr. Pastis' attempts to bring harmony and peace to our disparate species. In fact, I gave my neighbor a copy of this book and his response was, "Book OK. More beer?" Which confirmed my respect for Mr. Pastis' keen powers of observation. Well done, sir!

What do you want to know, it's Pearls. If you liked other treasuries, you'll like this one. If you don't like dark, "edgy" humor you won't. 'nuff said.

... Must get them all....... The best cartoon strip since Calvin and Hobbes... hands down !

My go-to mindless read on my Kindle. Everyone needs one of those.

Stephan Pastis is hilarious & never disappoints. I laughed until I cried, reading this book. I recommend this treasury to anyone who enjoys the funnies.

I was just a few paragraphs into the text when my buffoon alarm started ringing. The authors state that all computers on a wired Local Area Network see all of the network traffic on the LAN. I'm no expert, but I know this just isn't true. It was true 20 years ago, but not today. Clearly the authors aren't experts either.

This is an excellent book. Even though it uses just Cisco examples, the processes and concepts are well explained and can be generally applied to all home wireless systems.

One of the drawbacks of working in IT is that you get numerous requests from friends and neighbors asking for help setting up wireless networks (or fixing the ones they already have). I've wanted a book I could recommend that would give them everything they need, written at a level they could understand. I think I found it here... Wireless Home Networking Simplified by Jim Doherty and Neil Anderson. Very well done...Contents:Part 1 - How Does It Work: How Wireless LANs Work; Wireless Standards - What the Letters Mean; Selecting the Right Wireless Standard for Your NetworkPart 2 - What You Should Know: Planning Your Wireless Network; Wireless Security - What You Need to Know; What to BuyPart 3 - How Do I Set It Up?: Wireless Router Setup; Wireless NIC Setup; Wireless Security SetupPart 4 - "Honey, This Stupid Wireless Thing Is Not Working": Troubleshooting - I Can't Connect At All; Troubleshooting - I Can Connect Sometimes; Troubleshooting - I Can Connect, But It's SlowPart 5 - Bell and Whistles: Wireless Video and Entertainment; Wireless to Go; The Future of Wireless NetworkingAppendixes: MAC Address Filtering; 802.11n Wireless Channels; 802.11 Additional Revisions; Glossary; IndexI would have loved to have a copy of book a few years back when I first went wireless at home. The writing style is well-suited to a reasonably intelligent person who isn't brand new to computers. All the examples are using LinkSys products, but it's not that hard to make the appropriate adjustments if you're running something else, like D-Link. Rather than just giving the reader the basic "do this, this, and this", the authors explain the background and concepts that come into play when setting up an effective wireless network. For instance, the security section goes into a good discussion about why it's important to pay attention to how you configure your router. The options are presented in a clear, easy to understand fashion, as well as how all the other devices on your wireless network will need to be configured based on the choices you make. I also liked the chapter on Bells and Whistles, as it goes beyond the basics of connecting your computer to the Internet. With all the gaming consoles now supporting wireless connectivity, it's important to include coverage in this area. You just *know* your kid is going to want to connect his new XBox or Wii to the network...If you're wanting to take the wireless plunge, do so with this book in hand. You'll increase your chances of success, and probably save a few hairs on your head in the process...

Informative, easy to read and understand. The only thing was that the focus is on linksys products. Although the reasoning is explained in the preface, I was actually interested in using other brands. The first few chapters satisfied my curiousity, and re-enforced on what I already knew and expanded my knowledge about security. If your a fan of linksys then this book is great for those who have only basic knowledge of the technology.

This book is an excellent primer on networking. Basic enough for a beginner but with enough detail for people comfortable with Windows networking. Very clearly written

Not a bad book. Truely a decent backup for when you're working on solving a wifi problem and have no online or paper manual.Or better yet, when Joe six-pack asks for help with their wifi gear you can chuck 'em this and tell 'em to RTFM!!!

So far it looks pretty good but will be unable to give review until finished with read it .

Absolutely solid follow up to Generation One. The ending will drop your jaw a bit I expect and I cannot wait for the next "chapter". The world that Pittacus Lore has created makes it absolutely easy to imagine in your head as you read the story. Been a fan since the beginning and have read all the Novellas associated with this universe love that it has been continued and hasn't lost it's edge.

Seeing this series thru starting from I Am Number Four even if this one started a little slowly. The author’s style to tell multiple tales and fuse them into one is impeccable. As usual it’s a bit annoying that the kids take a prominent role in this series at the expense of the adults not withstanding that’s it’s a YA genre. The author manages to develop multiple characters consistent with their personalities and endemic to their legacies. Then interlaces the manifestation of these legacies in a symbiotic way that requires ingenuity. In my mind the main message is that things are complicated. Rare is the purely evil species. Intentions are mostly faced into the proper direction. But, lack of communication and sound judgment can cause chaos, war, and unnecessary rifts among friends and allies. This can only be recognized from a global point of view which is that of God, or in this case, the reader and author, who is the fashioner of this imaginary our tale.

After wading through too many chapters of boring drivel, the story becomes remarkably reminiscent of Captain America: Civil War. It is apparent that the author has no clearly developed plot in mind as each book seems to have an "off the cuff" feel to it. And the constant use of more and more of the old Loric characters, when this series is supposed to be 'the next generation' seems like a cheap attempt to hold reader interest. There are also too many inconsistencies between books, (like in the first series). For example, in the first book, Rabiya was the Shiekh's niece; in the second book, she is his daughter.

I love all these books. I started with "I Am Number Four", I went through them all, including all the novellas. I was extremely happy when this second series began! I just keep waiting, impatiently, for more.

Just a total thrill ride throughout. In depth characters that you can come to love and root for. Climaxing to an ending that leaves you wanting more and wondering what's about to happen. Truly an awesome read.

Mostly the Human Garde in this one, lot of action, no "charms" or weak science. I'm surprised the series has lasted this long…and there appears to be at least one more book to come. Not great fiction but an OK way to spend an afternoon.

Very good followup to the series reboot. The build up is palpable and foreshadows another truly epic event to change the world yet again as in the first series. High anticipation for the next books. Literally can't wait.

While I found the first book in this series somewhat intriguing, this one is little more than a rehash of the X-Men movie franchise. I won't write any spoilers but it is obvious by now that the Lorien Legacies Reborn series and the Legacy Chronicles are moving into Mutants (Human Garde) versus humans. Nine is Professor X (albeit a not very inspiring Professor X), Einar is Magneto, Isabella is Mystique and you have the usual humans who are too stupid to treat the Human Garde as allies and decide to exploit them instead. I have to say after United as One I find this new storyline depressing. The book is good if you like action, but not great or even original by any means. If you're into the Lorien series you're probably going to read it anyway. I hope the the next books in the series are a little more original. These days I only need to turn on the news to see people disrespect people who are different from them. This novel just wants to club me over the head with that fact.

#76,382 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I was given this book by a veteran named Robert Brutinel who had served in the Marine paratroops. He joined in 1942 and arrived on Guadalcanal after the climactic fighting. However, he served on Vella La Vella and Choiseul and then fought in the 5th Division and was wounded on Iwo. When he handed me the book he said, "If you want to know what it was like, this is it." He thought the humor of the book and the camaraderie of the Marines was exactly like what he experienced. So I read the book. To this day, it is my all-time favorite Pacific theater book. And it's right up there, in my opinion, with the Forgotten Soldier on the "all-time best WWII book" shelf (with a handful of others.)I couldn't help but read some of the critical reviews. I completely disagreed with them. Often they accused the author, Robert Leckie, of having a great resentment toward leadership and authority. I did not find that the case at all. In fact, Leckie often praised officers and had great respect for the good ones. What he couldn't stand, and it shows in his book, is unfair use of power in leadership positions -- also called theft. In almost every instance, be it the cigars LT Ivy-League stole, or the Japanese footlocker stolen by LT Big Picture, Leckie had every right to be angry and I wonder if any of the people who criticized him would have acted any differently.Another criticized Leckie for drinking and womanizing when he was not in combat. Apparently that reader did not realize that Leckie (just like the thousands of other Marines who took liberty Down Under) had been on Guadalcanal for 5 months, with nothing but death staring him in the face and not a single woman to lay eyes on, and was now on liberty in the very country he had helped save from invasion, knowing he would be going back into combat soon. Leckie was no different than many of the other Marines, just more honest about it. I laughed at the part when a Marine was coming back from a rendezvous with a young Australian girl and commented to Leckie that the Australian girls had no morals. Leckie's comment to that hypocrisy made me laugh.Helmet for my pillow is the type of book you simply can't put down. And you will be reading it and people in the other room will ask you "What's so funny?" because you often laugh out-loud at the wonderfully entertaining style Leckie uses. But at other times you will be riveted and saddened by the loss of great heroes like LT Racehorse and many others. (May they rest in peace.)Robert Leckie was truly a gifted writer and it's no wonder he made his career writing for newspapers and then writing best sellers. Fantastic book.

A must read for all Americans. This book is a perfect companion to E.B. Sledge's With the Old Breed. Both books chronicle the unrelenting stress, fatigue, brutality, and stygian hell that the 1st Marine Division experienced while fighting a cruel and sadistic Japanese enemy in the pacific theater of war. Leckie's Helmet for my Pillow takes the reader from the hallowed training grounds of Parris Island, through the months of chaos and death on Guadalcanal, to the misery and futility of Cape Gloucester, and on to the bloody beaches and airfields of Peleliu.Leckie is a truly gifted writer, who delineates not only the common courage, sacrifice and tenacity of the Marines in his unit, but also the banality and awkward humor that can arise between brothers in battle. Both Leckie and Sledge truly avoid the usual politically correct anti-war sentiments found so frequently today. However, these novels do not glorify war in any way. Instead, these books act as a testament to the unbelievable sacrifice and dedication exhibited by a generation of young men committed to protecting their country, The Marine Corps, and to each other, their brothers in arms.

Agree with all the other enthusiastic reviews. But what puzzled me, why invade Pelelieu? By that point the US controlled the sea lanes why not just blockade the island? Surely the 10,000 Japanese there if not re supplied could not have lasted more than a month. Losing some 7,000 US Marines seems an incredible waste.Major General William Rupertus, (USMC commander of 1st Marine Division) predicted the island would be secured within four days.[4] However, after repeated Imperial Army losses in previous island campaigns, Japan had developed new island-defense tactics and well-crafted fortifications that allowed stiff resistance,[5] extending the battle through more than two months. In the United States, this was a controversial battle because of the island's questionable strategic value and the high casualty rate, which exceeded that of all other amphibious operations during the Pacific War.[6] The National Museum of the Marine Corps called it "the bitterest battle of the war for the Marines".[7]

If, after reading Ian Toll's terrific trilogy on the Pacific Theater, and watching 'The Pacific' for the umpteenth time, you decide to buy the trilogy of first-hand accounts by Tatum, Leckie and Sledge, read them in that order. Leave the best till last. That's not to say the first is not worth a read, it is; any such first-hand account is worth a read, no matter if it fits with your personal perception of how a book should be written or not. Tatum's is not written like Leckie's, which in turn is not written like Sledge's, yet they each have their character and worth. And if more people read such accounts, the world might just become a more appreciative place for the likes of men who willingly stand up to serve. It might, also, slow down in its rush to war.Leckie's book, here, is written much like Ambrose Bierce might actually scribe it. Bierce was not everyone's cup of tea, but he saw war and described the cruel consequence of it in a similar way. For that, well done Mr. Leckie, I enjoyed it, a lot. Thank you!

I just like reading bits of history from someone's perspective that actually lived it. I thoroughly enjoyed this book because there were details about the actual fighting and boot camp and training but there was also "side stories", for lack of a better term, to help remember that these were real people. They weren't just some made up characters. These were incredible men that made this country great! I thought this book did a great job or portraying just that. And it didn't have all the profanity that some do. All that's not necessary to me. I know how vulgar Marines can be. I don't have to actually read it. I definitely recommend this book.

In the past few decades scholars of late antiquity, such as Peter Brown and Walter Goffart, have put forth the notion that the Roman Empire didn't fall violently, but rather “transformed” gently and peacefully into a new multi-ethnic society ruled by a series of Germanic kings.Bryan Ward-Perkins will have none of that. His book, along with Peter Heather's “The Fall of the Roman Empire: A New History,” is a stringent corrective that seeks to demonstrate that Rome fell violently, with a catastrophic plunge in living standards. The novelty of Ward-Perkins' book lies inhow he uses archaeological evidence such as pottery shards, tile roofs, and stone construction to show how poor, illiterate, and backward Europe became after imperial Rome disintegrated. You know things were bad when even the cows got smaller. In part one of the book, titled The Fall of Rome, Ward-Perkins begins with a short discussion of the controversy mentioned above and examines how historians from Gibbon on have interpreted Rome's demise. He then looks at eye-witness accounts of the period. What did people who lived through the period, figures like Leo, Bishop of Rome, Hydatius, another bishop in Spain, and the monk Severinus of Noricum have to say about the Germanic invasions? Not surprisingly, they recount years of murder, arson, bloodshed, and horror. Hydatius even connects the arrival of the Germans in his area with the four scourges mentioned in the Book of Revelations and claims that mothers were driven by hunger to kill and eat their own children. After demonstrating the violence of the Germanic invasions and terrifying us with descriptive scenes of anarchy and chaos, Ward-Perkins spends 50 pages examining how and why this happened. The period from 376, when the Goths first invaded, to 476, when Odovacar deposed Romulus Agustulus, is terribly complicated, with dozens of main actors, abrupt reversals of fortune, betrayal, unexpected death, heroic struggle, and the like. Ward-Perkins does a serviceable job of leading the reader through this maze, but you'll need some background in the period to really make sense of it. Peter Heather's account has more detail, cohesion, and narrative energy, so my advice is to read him first. In the second part of the book, titled the End of Civilization, Ward-Perkins looks at the Roman economy before and after the Germanic invasions. Using archaeological evidence gleaned from diggings all over the Roman Empire, he shows how even the poor benefited from the fruits of Rome's sophisticated and complex economy. With access to well-made pottery, leather and metal goods, coins, tile roofs, and stone buildings, the Roman everyman of 2,000 years ago enjoyed a standard of living that would not be reached again in many parts of Europe for 1,000 years.Mr. Ward-Perkins also makes us realize how intellectual life, literacy, and the higher arts always rest on a certain level of material wealth and sophistication. While pots, coins, and tile roofs might seem boring, their presence indicates specialized training and knowledge, and without them, not only are we deprived of good plumbing, we are bereft of art, philosophy, and literary culture.I loved this book; it is beautifully written and full of arcane information, obscure authors, excellent charts, graphs and maps, and solid original scholarship, In short, it is a history buff's delight. Find it and read it--your view of Rome will never be the same.

The goal of this short volume (considering the possible scope of such a study) is to put forward the author’s case for his claim that the Western Roman Empire did actually “fall” in the commonly understood sense, refuting some more modernistic interpretations. Some authors assert that the empire simply entered a prolonged period of slow decline; others even more radically describe this as a “transformation,” suggesting that post-Empire late antiquity, although different, was somehow just as good or better than the original, that people were freer or otherwise better off, etc.It may (as some reviewers assert) be a consensus view that the Western Empire did not signal the end of civilization, and that the invaders attempted to continue administering the empire. The author grants that assertion but with qualifications. He states at one point that “the fifth century invasions caused these difficulties, and brought down the ancient economy in the West. However, this does not mean that the death of the sophisticated ancient world was intended by the Germanic peoples. The Invaders entered the Empire with a wish to share in its high standard of living, not to destroy it...” My own conclusion, based in part on this book, is that wittingly or not, the invaders killed the goose that laid the golden egg, and that however much they may have wanted to preserve the system, they lacked the knowledge and the civil structures needed to keep civilization at its former level. In the above respect, I felt the author made a strong and believable case for his point of view. He describes what the effects on those who lived through and after the fall likely were. He explains what the archeological record can and cannot tell us, and when he is extrapolating or theorizing about what happened rather than reporting actual findings, he makes this clear. He accurately points out what many writers gloss over, which is that the fall really occurred in the Western Empire, and that the Eastern Empire actually withstood the initial invasions quite well and continued to prosper for a much longer time.A few readers reported that they found this a little boring. I felt it was quite readable and well-annotated, and did not unnecessarily belabor its points. The author made several interesting observations; one concerned graffiti and what it shows us about the level of a society’s literacy. Another one I’ve found particularly pertinent to many historical works was his statement that “there is inevitably a close connection between the way we view our own world and the way we interpret the past.” This observation alone goes a long way towards explaining why there are so many “revisionist” histories out there; many authors are trying to rewrite the past in order to justify their vision of what the present should be like. This particular book has no obvious political or social agenda in that respect. The book does NOT provide much detail about WHY the Western Empire fell. It does not get into any real detail about the condition of the empire in 400 AD that he believes made the Western Empire vulnerable to the barbarian invasions, and definitely does not attempt to analyze what may have happened in Roman society that led to that state. That does not appear to be its purpose, and in retrospect, I do not view that as a shortcoming. That ground has been well-covered by others, so those looking for something more comprehensive that includes this particular kind of analysis will need to look elsewhere.

Superbly readable and a pleasure. Ward-Perkins offers a corrective to the new revisionists who insist that the Roman Empire went gently into that good night. It was neither gentle nor good. The end of that civilization was social and economic catastrophe. Using archeological and textual evidence, the author reveals the depth of the collapse and a plunge into a chaos that did not end for centuries in the West. The book is suprisingly short but gives clear, concise evidence for the author's thesis.

Part of my reason to read this book was to see if there were any parallels in the fall of Rome to what's happening today in the West. Turns out, plenty, if you care to look.I loved it/It was amazing5/5 Goodreads5/5 AmazonFurther Readingo The Decline and Fall of Europe (and maybe the West), Time, August 22, 2011o The New Europeans, National Geographic, September 28, 2016

Have loved Star Wars Comics for the past 2 decades or so. I was a HUGE fan of what Darkhorse did with the series, and when Marvel took over, after the Disney buyout, I was rather nervous, that all the new Star Wars comics would have cameos of Donald Duck or something, LOL. I must say that I have never been so happy to be wrong. This series is to date ( as far as I know) the only Comic "series" to tacke the the newest Trilogy continuity. I believe Marvel has doen some mini-series in this era , but as far a long runnin series I think thiis series is your ticket, if you want a book set during this era. This series starts off, with the Resistance being formed but before the events of the Force Awakens. I am not sure how long before, but I would estimate maybe a yearor so. Overall the series is pretty captivating and delves into the actions of Poe and his "Black Sqaudron" during the Cold War between the Resistance and the First Order. The story is a serious one, but doesn't go into the dark depths of the Star Wars universe like some of the Dark Horse titles did. I am ok with this, and this is defenitely a Star Wars story that is suitable for younger readers, but not "kiddy."I think the art style is pretty good, not as good as some of the stuff Dark Horse sent us, but it is quality. I would compare it to the new Marvel Star Wars series that they put out which focuses on the main characters of the Original Trilogy.Overall, I recommend picking this series up, it is fun. I don't think is "seminal piece" of Star Wars comics lore (like Dark Empire by Dark Horse), but it is a fun way to explore the New Trilogy era.

This book was a real surprise. You see, I wasn't enamored with the Poe character from The Force Awakens. I thought he was OK (and, I'll admit, he's been growing on me). But, it wasn't an instant like. Now, this book comes along and breaks my expectation. Not only is it a damn good Star Wars read, the stories have made me like the Poe Dameron character more than I did before! Here's what I like about this book:1. We finally get a story that adds depth to the new movie and continuity! I love reading about Luke and Leia and Han, but, damn, man! It's time to learn about the new characters from TFA. This book does that.2. The story references and continues from the young adult novel Before The Awakening. You don't need to read that book to enjoy this comic (I didn't read it), but you've got some continuity there--and that's cool!3. The story also fleshes out part of TFA. In the opening scene of Episode VII, we see Poe meet with Lor San Tekka. This comic shows where that quest began--with General Organa's orders to seek out the Explorer and try to learn where it is Luke Skywalker has fled. This story adds more depth to the movie.4. We see the creation of Black Squadron, and we get to know the original pilots: Snap Wexley, Kare Kun, L'ulo, Jess Pava, and Oddy Muva. It is nice to get some more depth on these characters. For example, did you know that Snap and Kare are romantically involved? Did you know L'ulo practically raised Poe, and Poe's parents were Rebel Alliance fighters? Yep. Poe spent his childhood on Yavin 4! Jess is a wiz with starfighter mechanics--always trying new gear and systems. And, Oddy starts off flying an old surplus A-Wing because the Resistance doesn't have enough of the T-70 X-Wings.5. Agent Terex is an excellent antagonist. He's a royal, pompous, ass--a real Imperial. And, his personal ship is the Carrion Spike. Well, that's Grand Moff's Tarkin's personal vessel..or was, 35+ years ago. How did Terex get his hands on it?6. There's cool, Star Warsy Space Opera stuff! An ancient city in the center of a mountain. First Order stormtroopers on hoverpacks. Japanese-Godzilla-like-giant-monsters! A prison that needs no walls as it is set on a high gravity world. The prison is set in a 1G field, and if anybody leaves that field, the 8Gs of the world outside will kill them. Cool stuff!7. The stories are interesting and fun and feel like Star Wars. They're also a large dose of humor. Reading Poe and Terex go at it verbally is a hoot! And, BB-8 gathers the astromechs from the squadron to go about their own little mission. Cracks me up, this line of astros, following BB-8, single file, all electronically hooting and humming. What a scene!8. Papa Toren returns! Did you read the Lando book? Lando met with Papa Toren, and it was Toren who put the contract out on Calrissian. He's this interesting alien. Silent. And, the's got these little guys with wings that buzz around him, doing his communicating for him. So, here we are, 40+ years later, and Toren is in prison! Neat connection for those who catch it.Yes, I loved this book. And, I can't wait for volume two to come out (the wait is too long!).

The trick with the backstory material in these large franchise universes (Star Wars and Star Trek) is building off the canon material and filling in the details, without painting yourself into a corner that will be made obsolete by the next movie. This does the trick well - known characters and alien races, merged with a goal (find the Lor San Tekka seen in the Force Awakens). It's sort of a tease, but the story, the action, the charactes all worked together here for an enjoyable story.

Not all that interesting with sub-par artwork. So forgettable that I can’t think of anything else to say but need more words for review.

Fan Fave Poe Dameron gets to show off his wit and skill in this one-shot. Well written and drawn, very engaging. Wonderful addition to the canon.

Very mediocre, but the series becomes amazing so it’s worth the read.

Really love all 3 volumes about Poe. Beautiful art, interesting stories and fills in some gaps.
