About the Author

Gilbert Morris spent ten years as a pastor before becoming Professor of English at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas and earning a Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas. During the summers of 1984 and 1985, he did postgraduate work at the University of London. OK, the first two books of the series weren't too bad. After that I had to delete them from my Oasis. Leah had "Soft" eyes which apparently meant to this author she was a hooker who looked at any man she thought might make her rich with lustful eyes. And her father who lived in a decent house, not a tent, was doing OK, not great but not horrible. So this guy rewrote this and said he was a drunk who lived in a tent.Made me want to say "huh"?I am sorry I bought this set of e-books. I love Bible based fiction and some of it does help me get more into things but from this point in the series forward, made me wish I had bought them one at a time so I wouldn't own the whole series never to be read. Made me understand why he only put the first book on Kindle Unlimited. If I had been able to get them with my KU Subscription, I would have stopped before reading the rest of this one and stopped reading any of the rest of them.

This is the story of Jacob and Esau who were so different from each other, and Jacob wanted the birthright while Esau did not care much for it. But Esau was disappointed and angry that Jacob got the blessing from his father Isaac instead of him. So Jacob had to flee for his life and settled in a town with Laban who had two daughters Rachel and Leah, very interesting story.

This is a wonderful continuation of the lineage and legacy of Noah, Abraham, Isaac and now Jacob (Isaac). To see the lives of these men fleshed out gives new meaning to the lives they lived to know and honor the one true God. Their struggles were real, their faith stretched and their hope for the future blossomed in light of their walk with God.

This author has a way of bringing Biblical characters and events to life in an exciting way. Once I read the first in the Lions of Judah series, I had to read each of them - and they all were true to scripture, with exciting events and characters that might have actually occurred in the real lives of the people of whom he wrote. An extremely enjoyable reading experience for anyone who loves to read the Bible.

It took me months to reach the middle of the book. I just didn't want to pick it up. Maybe I've heard the story too often or maybe it just didn't catch/keep my attention. However, once the story shifted to Dinah, I finished it the same day. I really enjoyed reading about Dinah and what 'could have happened'. It was beautiful love story with a sweet ending.

Looking forward to reading Book 4. The author does a great job describing everything. He makes you feel like you are there too.

Book #3 was excellent! The sharp pictures painted by Gilbert Morris" words made me feel like the scenes were happening right in front of me. I enjoyed the parallel stories of Jacob"s patience and His obedience to God along with the love story of Dinah and Demetrius. I would recommend this book and the entire series to everyone.

Gilbert's ability to create a captivating tale based on scripture is incredible. The story brings the characters to life and they draw you into the story. Great read.

I thought I remembered my friend Art Petty saying that he liked Good Strategy Bad Strategy: The Difference and Why It Matters by Richard Rumelt. So, I emailed him and asked if that was true. Here’s his reply.“Like is an understatement. Rumelt’s kernel of Strategy is the most powerful, supple approach for creating clarity and coherence on strategy I’ve yet encountered.”Art’s no novice. He’s been an effective executive and an effective consultant for decades. He works with clients on strategy. And, guess what? The book lived up to Art’s recommendation and then some.The kernel of Strategy that Art referred to is a great reason to read the book, even if that’s all you get out of it. Here’s Rumelt’s description of the kernel.“A good strategy has an essential logical structure that I call the kernel. The kernel of a strategy contains three elements: a diagnosis, a guiding policy, and coherent action. The guiding policy specifies the approach to dealing with the obstacles called out in the diagnosis. It is like a signpost, marking the direction forward but not defining the details of the trip. Coherent actions are feasible coordinated policies, resource commitments, and actions designed to carry out the guiding policy”.The kernel isn’t a magic formula. It’s a guide to the most important hard work you will do to create a strategy. If you’re a consultant, it’s a quick way to help you figure out if your client has a strategy or not. As Rumelt points out in the book, a lot of things masquerade as strategy. Plans and slogans and goals can look like strategy until you analyze them with a tool like the kernel.What makes creating a great strategy hard is that it involves choices, and we don’t like choices. He spends half of the time on diagnosis, another 40 percent on what Rumelt calls the guiding philosophy, and 10 percent on coherent actions. It’s much harder to do it that way than it is to go off to an offsite and whip up some generalities that sound good but don’t have much impact on day-to-day work life.Here’s what it comes down to. The kernel is the way you develop a good strategy. The kernel is also the way that you identify bad strategy, whether it’s yours or someone else’s. Now that I’ve read this book, I won’t think about doing strategy the same way ever again. Rumelt has helped me know some danger signals to watch for. And he’s given me a language for guiding the process of creating and evaluating a strategy.The kernel is reason enough to buy and read this book, but there are lots of other goodies here, too. There’s analysis of many business situations that I found both absorbing and compelling.There’s one other thing you can take away from this book. Even when you do the work to create and execute a good strategy, you can still not succeed. You can make bad choices, even with a good process. Luck still plays a role. Unforeseen events play a role. The competition plays a role.This book was written in 2006. Rumelt makes several predictions about how some things will play out in the years ahead. He gets some of them right, some of them wrong, and some of them a mix of both. That’s a good thing because it demonstrates what’s true in real life. There are times when you can do everything wrong and have things turn out right. And there are times when you can do everything right and still go down in flames.One of my favorite quotes about life is from the American writer and horseplayer, Damon Runyon. Rumelt's `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' provides a refreshing, straight-forward take on business strategy basics. Written in an informal tone, the reader can immediately connect with the author. The book demonstrates strategies from large corporations and his personal anecdotes. Rumelt cuts through the common strategy jargon and differentiates real strategy from misguided goal setting. The book follows this pattern, through Chapter 6, at least. Then somewhat unexpectedly, the book turns from `straight-shooting' business strategy to theoretical concepts and meandering stories, leaving the reader wondering, `where exactly this book is headed'.On the positive side, the book is worth its purchase price for the clarity Rumelt offers on how to create good strategy. He uses the `kernel' method emphasizing the need to identify the structure of a current business challenge, choosing a `guiding policy' for dealing with the challenge, and lastly designing a series of actions or resource allocations in order to implement the `guiding policy'. With his solid advice and focus on action items as the underlying mechanism for effective business strategy, it begs the question in today's market, `how can so many of today's corporations issue strategies that are `fluff' and no action. Rumelt hits the nail on the head with the majority of the examples he uses, one of which, after peeling away the layers of a corporate bank's `strategy' the core message is a bank exists to be a bank. Rumelt uses the bank example to show what strategy is not. Strategy is not a goal setting, is not a budget and is not a laundry list of lofty desirable outcomes. Good strategy is specific and action-oriented.In the same vein, another positive point for the `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' content is that Rumelt identifies the core element to initiating a good strategy: "discovering the critical factors in a situation" and creating a set of actions to deal with the situation. The emphasis on taking action is a key component of the book. It is often missing in the cultural jargon and `fluff' that other strategic books espouse. In this book, strategy is not disguised as a company's mission and/or values. Additionally, Rumelt highlights that a coherent strategy does not consist of companies with too many objectives; as this ultimately results in a loss of focus.On the other side of the coin, after Chapter 6 the reader will need to have patience to work through the concepts and examples Rumelt presents. It would be most beneficial if the reader is already well-versed in management strategy and/or has years of on the job experience in order to best apply and thoroughly understand his examples on proximate objectives, chain-link systems and inertia and entropy. The examples come more from his personal consulting experiences and the demonstrative stories are not as direct and to the point as the examples in his first few chapters. The overarching concepts are relevant to strategy, but again unless the reader is well-versed in management strategy the application or replication of these concepts may prove difficult.Overall, `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' is a recommended read for those interested in business strategy. The no-nonsense approach is refreshing and there are definite `pearls' of strategic wisdom in the book. There are a myriad of examples from history and business cases in which Rumelt's strategic advice draws upon. However, the reader should keep in mind that the later sections of the book are lackluster compared to the first few chapters. With that said, the book should still be given a chance and is worth its investment. All in all, the book is a `mixed bag', but take a chance and see for yourself.

I'm an elementary school ESOL teacher. My own 4th grade child has moderate auditory processing and working memory challenges.Right now, I'm using this book at home to help my 4th grader. Last spring the math specialist was trying to drill her on the multiplication tables by rote memory -- and it just wasn't happening. In fact, she ended up with a huge case of failure-induced math anxiety. My concern was that I wanted her to have a stronger conceptual understanding of multiplication, not just to spit out memorized math facts. ...so I bought this book for use at home.In the past 3 weeks (just prior to and at the beginning of the school year), we've been working through the first set of conversations, drawing activities, and games in this book. Yesterday, as we were talking about the game (from the book) we've been playing, I commented to my child, "See, math isn't so bad." (She had been so anxious about going back to school this year and taking math.) She responded, "Mom, that game isn't math. It's fun!" Hmmmmmmm.....:)The fewer, deeper visually-oriented activities -- such as the pattern coloring and analyses activity (which we also invited her 7th grade sister to do as part of the fun) -- has prepared my 4th grader well. It's amazing to see. She's more fluent in identifying composite and prime numbers and their factors. She's been zipping through her multiplication homework each night so we get to the games from this book. When she gets stuck, I've been having her use some of the visual strategies emphasized in the book along with the other items in her growing strategy toolkit.More activities in an education book can be overwhelming and sometimes, not as useful. Fewer, deeper games around Big Ideas can have a positive effect on conceptual understanding. This book has a great set of deep, visually-engaging approaches to mathematical understanding. I'm looking forward to the Grade 7 book and plan on buying it to use with my older child. One suggestion: Consider some kind of grouping discount (for purchases of multiple books in this set) for those of us who'd like to buy these books for home use each year.In terms of my ESOL teacher job: My focus is on teaching my students at school how to use language to learn content. I can see great promise for this book with my multilingual learners as well

This book is amazing for non-mathematical parents like myself. I think I have learned as much as my child. Having spent 41 years as a communication and language arts teacher, math was a subject I avoided. My 9 year old really enjoys the perceptual and visual challenges this program provides. I do wish it offered an answer guide for parents and perhaps DVD's of its core concepts. I know the answers are to be discovered by the students however, if there is a struggle it can be hard to help walk them through it. However, it has caused me to work through the problems myself using Google and YouTube, so in the end it has still been helpful.

I’m certain many of these tasks could be used in multiple grade levels. Some really intriguing math tasks that offer entry points for students at all levels.

About the Author

Dr. Cornelia E. Davis, better known as Connie, is an author, speaker, renowned epidemiologist and disease detective. She was sent by the World Health Organization (WHO) to Ethiopia in 1990 to help African Ministries of Health prevent or control outbreaks of meningococcal meningitis. While working in Addis Ababa, she was caught up in the fast-moving civil war and stayed behind as Acting Director of the WHO EPR Centre when UN staff were evacuated. A series of events led her to a three-month-old infant found on the steps of St. George's Cathedral. She described this exciting adventure in her new memoir, Three Years in Ethiopia.Connie was raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, attended Gonzaga University, and was one of the first black women admitted to the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (1968). After finishing a pediatric residency, she was hired by WHO to work in the Smallpox Eradication Program in India (1975-77). This highly successful program changed her medical focus and inspired her first book, Searching for Sitala Mata: Eradicating Smallpox in India.Connie earned her Masters of Public Health (MPH) degree from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and went on to work in the EIS (Epidemic Intelligence Service) at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. For the next 30 years, she battled disease outbreaks in Africa and Asia for WHO and USAID. An intrepid world traveler, she has worked in or traveled to 97 countries and territories. She lives on the northern shores of Lake Chapala near Guadalajara, Mexico.
