This is one of the finest books i have read in Security. It gives details on some of the best security principles every major industries must follow to achieve data protection and user authentication/authorization for their web applications. I am a security professional so I could finish this book in a few days but for a first timer or new to the world of security this will be a great book to get an idea on how things work in enterprises.

Book goes thru various security concepts, history and approaches, has javaScript/Node.JS/NPM code for reference. If your looking for a good detailed overview of web security for web development, then this is the boo for you.

Not what I expected. The book is more of an example for implementing OAuth and OpenID Connect with Node and Express. If you are looking for an in-depth explanation of OAuth or OpenId, then this is the wrong book. The book starts with a very high level overview of security concepts. This is rather basic, and most of it I already knew (and I am not a security expert). Then it has a closer look at OAuth and OpenID Connect. But the explanation is just 5 pages, and one page is a diagram. The diagram is worse than the one you find in Wikipedia (there should be 3 actors). The rest is mostly code (which I was not interested in).At that point I stopped reading, as it wasn't what I was looking for.

Before there was ‘The Matrix’ and ‘Bladerunner’, before there was even ‘1984’, there was 'Brave New World'. It is astonishing that Aldous Huxley wrote this tale of technological dystopia in 1932. The social elements from the story are similar to those in Orwell and Kafka and others, namely a society of obedient sheep run by the state and benevolent dictators through brainwashing and groupthink. But what’s striking about the novel is how it so astutely anticipates a society taken over by benevolent technocrats rather than politicians, a scenario that appears increasingly likely in the age of AI and genetic engineering. Huxley came from an illustrious scientific family with social connections. His grandfather was Thomas Henry Huxley, Darwin’s close friend, publicist and “bulldog”, whose famous smackdown of Bishop Samuel Wilberforce has been relished by rationalists fighting against religious faith ever since. His brother was Julian Huxley, a famous biologist who among other accomplishments wrote a marvelous tome on everything that was then known about biology with H. G. Wells. Steeped in scientific as well as social discourse, possessing a deep knowledge of medical and other scientific research, Aldous was in an ideal position to write a far-reaching novel. This he duly did. The basic premise of the novel sounds eerily prescient. Sometime in the near future, society has been regimented into a caste system where people are genetically engineered by the state in large state-run reproductive farms. Anticipating ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, only a select few women and men are capable of providing fertile eggs and sperm for this careful social engineering. The higher castes are strong, intelligent and charismatic. The lower castes are turgid, obedient and physically weak. They don’t begrudge those from the upper castes because their genetic engineering has largely removed their propensity toward jealousy and violence. Most notably, because reproduction is now the responsibility of the state, there is no longer a concept of a family, of a father or mother. There is knowledge of these concepts, but it’s regarded as archaic history from a past era and is met with revulsion. How is this population kept under control? Not shockingly at all, through sex, drugs and rock and roll. Promiscuity is encouraged from childhood onwards and is simply a way of life, and everyone sleeps with everyone else, again without feeling jealousy or resentment (it was this depiction of promiscuity that led the book to be banned in India in the 60s). They flood their bodies with a drug called soma whenever they feel any kind of negative emotion welling up inside and party like there’s no end. They are brainwashed into believing the virtues of these and other interventions by the state through subliminal messages played when they are sleeping; such unconscious brainwashing goes all the way back to their birth. People do die, but out of sight, and when they are still looking young and attractive. Death is little more than a nuisance, a slight distraction from youth, beauty and fun.Like Neo from ‘The Matrix’, one particular citizen of this society named Bernard Marx starts feeling that there is more to the world than would be apparent from this state of induced bliss. On a tryst with a particularly attractive member of his caste in an Indian reservation in New Mexico, he comes across a man referred to as the savage. The savage is the product of an illegitimate encounter (back when there were parents) between a member of a lower caste and the Director of Hatcheries who oversees all the controlled reproduction. He has grown up without any of the enlightened instruments of the New World, but his mother has kept a copy of Shakespeare with her so he knows all of Shakespeare by heart and frequently quotes it. Marx brings the savage back to his society. The rest of the book describes the savage’s reaction to this supposed utopia and its ultimately tragic consequences. Ultimately he concludes that it’s better to have free will and feel occasionally unhappy, resentful and angry than live in a society where free will is squelched and the population is kept bathed in an induced state of artificial happiness. The vision of technological control in the novel is sweeping and frighteningly prescient. There is the brainwashing and complacent submission to the status quo that everyone undergoes which is similar to the messages provided in modern times by TV, social media and the 24-hour news cycle. There are the chemical and genetic interventions made by the state right in the embryonic stage to make sure that the embryos grow up with desired physical or mental advantages or deficiencies. These kinds of interventions are the exact kind feared by those wary of CRISPR and other genetic editing technologies. Finally, keeping the population preoccupied, entertained and away from critical thinking through sex and promiscuity is a particularly potent form of societal control that has been appreciated well by Victoria’s Secret, and that will not end with developments in virtual reality. In some sense, Huxley completely anticipates the social problems engendered by the technological takeover of human jobs by robots and AI. Once human beings are left with nothing to do, how does the state ensure that they are prevented from becoming bored and restless and causing all kinds of trouble? In his book “Homo Deus”, Yuval Harari asks the same questions and concludes that a technocratic society will come up with distractions like virtual reality video games, new psychoactive drugs and novel forms of sexual entertainment that will keep the vast majority of unemployed from becoming bored and potentially hostile. I do not know whether Harari read Huxley, but I do feel more frightened by Huxley than by Harari. One reason I feel more frightened is because of what he leaves out; the book was published in 1932, so it omits any discussion of nuclear weapons which were invented ten years later. The combination of nuclear weapons with limitless societal control through technology makes for a particularly combustible mix.The biggest prediction of Huxley’s dystopia, and one distinctly different from that made by Orwell or Kafka, is that instead of a socialist state, people’s minds are much more likely to be controlled in the near future by the leaders of technology companies like Google and Facebook who have formed an unholy nexus with the government. With their social media alerts and Fitbits and maps, the tech companies are increasingly telling us how to live our lives and distracting us from free thinking. Instead of communist regimes like the Soviet Union forcibly trampling on individual choice and liberty, we are already gently but willingly ceding our choices, privacy and liberties to machines and algorithms developed by these companies. And just like the state in Huxley and Orwell’s works, the leaders of these corporations will tell us why it’s in our best interests to let technology control our lives and freedom, when all the while it would really be in their best interests to tell us this. Our capitulation to their inventions will look helpful and voluntary and will feel pleasurable and even noble, but it will be no less complete than the capitulation of every individual in “Brave New World” or “1984”. The only question is, will there be any savages left among us to tell us how foolishly we are behaving?

Do NOT bother with the Kindle version. Specifically the one with the picture of the eggs and blood. There IS a kindle version that is the correct text (with the title in red banner) listed for $10+. But the eggs and blood version is completely different, simplified, dumbed down version of the physical book. The paperback format as pictured on the product page is what I have for my physical copy and they are vastly different. I read the kindle version while at work on my computer during slow periods and then came home and attempted to read the book version where I left off, only to find that chapters didn't line up, there were entire pages of conversation missing towards the end of the book between Mustapha Mond and John, the Savage. ENTIRE. PAGES. Very upsetting to learn this. It shouldn't be on the same product page listed as a kindle version. It's a completely different version.DO NOT PURCHASE THE KINDLE VERSION.

“It is rather alarming to find that only twenty-seven years [after writing Brave New World] quite a number of those forecasts have already come true, and come true with vengeance…Some of them were foreseen, and I think some of them I didn’t have the imagination to foresee, but I t think there is a whole armory at the disposal of potential dictators at the moment.”– Aldous Huxley [1958]Known for being one of the most influential dystopian authors of all time, Aldous Huxley, who was a jack of all trades, created his magnum opus, Brave New World in 1931, which was published a year later. Nigh nine decades later, many of his ominous and scholarly insights are manifesting right before our eyes. For these reasons, Brave New World should be read through rather carefully, for it serves as a severe warning not only about what might be coming, but what is already here. This particular fusion of Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited by Aldous Huxley truly is as fascinating as it is disturbing in scope. The former offers his vision of what a dystopian world might be like, while the latter offers a trenchant examination of Brave New World. While some may call some of Huxley’s ideas ‘prophetic’ in a sense, it’s more of a logical deduction given the available information that there was at a time. If one has a reasonable amount of quality information, one surely would be able to postulate a reasonable result given humanity’s penchant for falling for propaganda in droves historically. After all, most nations historically don’t operate under true freedom. What’s more, many ‘modern’ nations already implement many of the disturbing trends written about in this sobering, if intense account of could have happened, although in fiction, which is now turning into reality.Brave New World has been compared to Orwell’s 1984 due to the engineered control grid – each of which carries different methods – and with good reason. Whilst 1984 is ruled with an iron fist, Brave New World is ruled with a velvet one. Endless arguments have ensued in many circles as to which one we are gravitating towards, and it’s definitely intriguing although distressing contemplating such facts.Huxley does an outstanding job of painting a disturbing portrait within his fictional realm. The individuals within his society – who are essentially drones – have fallen over themselves for the ‘good of all’ – for the collective. The book is littered with countless examples of this. The individual, who is the foundation of society, is thrown aside, by the wayside. In respect to this troublesome and pernicious pervasive issue, which is seen more and more nowadays, Huxley noted the following words:“Brave New World presents a fanciful and somewhat ribald picture of a society, in which the attempt to recreate human beings in the likeness of terminates has been pushed almost to the limits of the possible. That we are being propelled in the direction of Brave New World is obvious. But not less obvious is the fact that we can, if we so desire, refuse to co-operate with the blind forces that are compelling us. As Mr. William Whyte has shown in his remarkable book, The Organization Man, a new Social Ethic is replacing our traditional ethical system – the system in which the individual is primary. The key words in this Social Ethic are “adjustment,” “adaptation,” “socially oriented behavior,” “belongingness,” “acquisition of social skills,” “team work,” “group living,” “group loyalty,” “group dynamics,” “group thinking,” “group creativity.” Its basic assumption is that the social whole has greater worth and significant than its individual parts, that inborn biological differences should be sacrificed to cultural uniformity, that the rights of the collective take precedence over what the eighteenth century called the Rights of Man.”[1]Furthermore, as Huxley notes, the:“…ideal man is the man who displays “dynamic conformity” (delicious phrase!) and an intense loyalty to the group, an unflagging desire to subordinate himself, to belong.”[2]Talk about a conformity crisis! That’s exactly where society is torpedoing to as we speak. And it all starts in youth, through the public schooling system. This conformity crisis in public schooling has been spoken about at length by John Taylor Gatto in his books, Dumbing Us Down, A Different Kind Of Teacher and Weapons Of Mass Instruction. In Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling, Gatto mentions the following explosive remarks:“Mass education cannot work to produce a fair society because its daily practice is practice in rigged competition, suppression and intimidation. The schools we’ve allowed to develop can’t work to teach nonmaterial values, the values which give meaning to everyone’s life, rich or poor, because the structure of schooling is held together by a Byzantine tapestry of reward and threat, of carrots and sticks. Official favor, grades, and other trinkets of subordination have no connection with education; they are the paraphernalia of servitude, not of freedom.”[3]“Schools are intended to produce, through the application of formulas, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled.”[4]“…schools and schooling are increasingly irrelevant to the great enterprises of the planet. No one believes anymore that scientists are trained in science classes or politicians in civics classes or poets in English classes. The truth is that schools don’t really teach anything except how to obey orders.”[5]Gatto minces no words. If you wish to see what is happening, right from the start via the public indoctrination system, READ John Taylor Gatto’s work. It is HIGHLY recommended.Returning to Huxley, the latter part of Brave New World & Brave New World Revisited also features Huxley’s letter to Orwell. Additionally, and arguably more importantly, the second book, Brave New World Revisited is absolutely mind bending.Brave New World Revisited includes intriguing information at length that supplements droves of added substance for the reader to familiarize themselves with some of the deeper niches of everything Brave New World stands for. One could view it as a few different essays on many of the most disturbing components and trends, featured in Brave New World, which society is currently following.Topics which are discussed include conformity, the collectivization of society, the attack on individuals, brainwashing, propaganda, social engineering, distractions within society, chemical persuasion, possible solutions and much more. Brave New World Revisited encompasses nigh 100 pages of additional information that should be essentially mandatory in education. It would be interesting to see what Huxley would have thought about the precision condition that is currently taking place on a mass scale in society today. There are so many angles to this, that one could write many essays and analyze it in a myriad of ways. Many have, and rightly so.With the recipes featured in Orwell and Huxley’s books, the system seems to be changing day by day, and not for the better. Propaganda, entrainment technology, social engineering, overmedication of the population, and more, are all being used to maliciously mold society to become not only uniform, but obedient to boot.Incisive individuals who value freedom and have inquiring minds should not only make this part of their library, but should prepare for what’s already here and much of what’s coming soon.Couple Brave New World with 1984, and you have the recipe of what the world is beginning to look like, which is a merger of those two ideals. And that’s a very, very disturbing proposition.Be warned._______________________________________________________________Sources:[1] Aldous Huxley, Brave New World & Brave New World Revisited, p. 257.[2] Ibid., p. 257.[3] John Taylor Gatto, Dumbing Us Down – The Hidden Curriculum Of Compulsory Schooling, pg. 69.[4] Ibid., p. 23.[5] Ibid., p. 21._______________________________________________________________If You are interested in the subject, the Book Reviews below follow as highly suggested reading:1984 by George OrwellDumbing Us Down by John Taylor GattoA Different Kind Of Teacher by John Taylor GattoWeapons Of Mass Instruction by John Taylor GattoRotten To The (Common) Core: Public Schooling, Standardized Tests & The Surveillance State by Dr. Joseph P. I have read many accounts of gambling addiction - including the devastation the disease causes for the addict and the family. Arnie Wexler faces squarely the ugly truth of how his gambling obsession led him to unspeakable lows, and he shares the steps he finally had to take to get help and experience recovery from one of the most insidious and least understood of all addictions. He also bravely acknowledges the toll his addiction took on his family. What distinguishes All Bets Are Off from other first-hand accounts of gambling addiction is the inclusion of Arnie's wife Sheila's "take" on each experience along the way...from how the addict's behavior during active gambling addiction impacted HER life to the challenges of rebuilding THEIRS lives together in recovery!Gambling addiction impacts the whole family...and recovery does as well. Arnie and Sheila pull no punches about the challenges of rebuilding trust, restoring a marriage and ultimately facing squarely the "roles" all parties play when there's an addict in the family.I wholeheartedly recommend this book not only for gambling addicts seeking or in recovery, but as a "must read" for spouses and family members of the gambling addict.Bea AikensLanie's Hope

My name is Drew P. And I have suffered from a gambling addiction personally. I have had the honor of getting to know Arnie through my recovery from my own gambling addiction. Arnie is a world class guy who's patience, wisdom and character is unmatched. I met Arnie while in a Inpatient rehab center in west palm beach Florida. I had all the symptoms talked about in this book, and had done a lot of the things that most problem gamblers have done... Lie, cheat, steal, ect. While still in denial of my addiction I challenged Arnie head on with everything he said that was trying to help me... As I grew in recovery I realized he was right and later appolagized for my actions. The reason I'm saying this is because as strong as the disease was in me and as ignorant as I was to Arnie he never gave up on me dispite my ignorant attitude showed me unconditional love and support. If you or anyone you know is suffering with this addiction this book is a great place to start. I especially like "Sheila's experience" section of the chapters. It allows you to see how the compulsive gamblers addiction effects the lives of those close to them first hand from the words of Arnies wife Shiela. This book has inspired me to persue a carrier in helping others, just like Arnie and myself, whos lives have been effected by gambling and who still suffer from a gambling problem. If you are suffering from this disease There IS hope and there ARE people who know what the problem gambler and there family's are going through. Thank you so much for putting it all in black and white Arnie and Shiela! Enjoy the book and God bless!

I am writing this review as a 25 year recoveringGambling addict, and former president of The Outreach Foundation for Problem and Compulsive Gamblers in Illinois. Thank you Mr Wexler for writing a comprehensive book about addictive gambling. This will be must reading for sponsees and their families. You give a complete picture of gambling and our society. At the same time we get to hear you and your wife's story of living with the addiction. We read how it was arrested and how you both found tremendous growth through your programs. Thank you for sharing that after abstinence our biggest challenge is bringing about a character change which should be worked on continuouslyFor the rest of our lives. Thank you both for sharing how important it is to have extensive public awareness and education about problem and addictive gambling. This book should be read by all! The story is riveting and the information about problem and addictive gambling should have the same awareness as drug and alcohol abuse. Best of all! This is a story of hope and love. It's happy ending is still being written. The passion of Arnie and SheilaHave saved the lives, and affected the lives of countless people for the better. Thank you for writing this book and the many wonderful additional chapters to be added in future additions. God bless you both, and thank you!Wayne Burdick free from bandage since 09/23/1989

A lot of what Arnie Wexler has to say was like looking in a mirror. Some of his chapters did not apply. The one thing I found most helpful is I realize now why I gamble. Things Arnie said started coming back to me. My father was a mirror image of Arnie, when he was young, I idolized him, therefore gambling keeps him in my heart. Each person will take something different from this book, but every gambler will find a piece of themselves within these words. Do yourself and those you love a favor and spend sometime with this book.

Knowing Arnie Wexler personally I can see his personality coming through in this book. He's real. He speaks the language all gamblers will understand. His story is a reality check for any one suffering with this little known addiction. He tells his story with the help of his wife Shelia. I think this book would be a great starting place for someone who has a loved one who has a gambling addiction. Her story is gripping as well.I am so happy someone has written a book for gambling addiction. All the other books out there are self help and rarely has the author really suffered from the addiction and won the battle. Then to go out and help others for the remainder of his life speaks to his character. Arnie is awesome and so is this book. As a compulsive gambler, I appreciates his candor and honesty.

This book really describes what goes on in the mind of a problem gambler. If you have tried to get your family to understand why it is so hard to stop, have them read this book. It was nice that the author included his wife’s experience about what it was like to live eith a problem gambler. I have tead many books over the years abiut compulsive gambling. This book was one of the best ones.

This book was a required book for a class. It was easy to read and did a fairly adequate job of explaining concepts and theories, and had many "what would you do?" types of case studies.I would have enjoyed those case studies more if there had been more follow-up of what did happen in the case studies in question, or more explanation of why the actions taken were taken; rather than being fodder for more thought, they could have been more educational. All in all, I can think of no better praise for a textbook than "It got me through the class, so it got its job done".

Book was highlighted in various spots and pages were creased and ripped in some parts but it is a good book and was in decent condition.

School text needed for school. Came promptly for start of class. Came as described.

exactly what was needed. worked out great. received within two day and returned easily enough. good book

I got the book for my BSN class. It has some very good explanations of legal, ethical, and moral issues that we deal with everyday in the Nursing Profession. It gives good definitions of terms and gives good examples to clarify. We have had some indepth discussions re: issues that we have been covering in class from the book. Good educational material for our Ethics class.

Easy to read text. Print is a nice size. Laid out on an easy to follow format. Good book for nursing ethics

As expected

I bought this book and I didn’t realize that there was pages ripped out. I needed those pages to do a homework assignment and ended up having to buy an ebook online to complete my assignment.

Personally, I don't even want to add a star up there in posting a review. Please don't buy this book, as it's a total misrepresentation of history. The protagonist in this book is a Japanese girl who lived in the northern part of Korea with her family in 1945. The book doesn't address anything about why her family lives in Korea in the first place and then retells the harrowing experience of her escape only after decades of adult life but does not fully describe the context of the setting. She conveniently skips the fact that her parents were imperialist occupants and that her father was a war criminal. Under the Japanese occupation, Koreans were faced with discrimination, persecution, inferior treatment, forced medical experiment, forced sex slavery, forced military draft to fight for Japan and resistance was met with execution and captivity. In fact, my maternal grandfather was jailed for participating in the resistance and died within 6 months of release due to physical punishment and deterioratIng health. This was when he was only 41 years of age. There is a justified reason as to why Koreans and Chinese still linger pain and agony from this period. There's a reference of bamboo trees in the cover illustration and the title, but honestly, there are not many bamboo trees in Korea, especially north because the ideal climate is in the southern region. There may be truth to her story of the ugly side of war but when the war was over, Korea wanted all the occupants out and no harm was done as they left. While the Nazi members and sympathizers were punished and the story of Jewish Holocaust retold to the world, the victims of horrendous killings and torture, rape and persecution by Koreans and China are not. To this day, many Japanese military ranks are still honored in their enshrined tombs even though they have been found guilty as war criminals. Would it be all right if the story was told from a girl of a Nazi family as the victim and Jews as the perpetrater? It's outrageous and only diminishes the atrocities Japanese have done in the past. This book is NOT appropriate for middle schoolers as it only confuses kids and promotes racial bias and hate toward Koreans.

Daughter absolutely loves this book. Excellent price too

A real story about a family and their terrifying adventure during World War II. It touched my heart and left me on the hook. Read 100 pages in a span of 3 days!

As described

This book was banned in Korea and China, and some of the State Boards of Education. Maryland and California pulled it from their required reading list for their 6th and 7th graders. Is this book worth reading? Judge it for yourself.1. First, this book speaks about a young girl being raped.Hardly seems an appropriate subject for 6th or 7th graders.2. Though it is classified as a "historical fiction" and therefore, it is allowed some elaboration, the history is so distorted in this book, particularly the roles of Japan and Japanese during WWII. The main character, a young Japanese girl, whose family flees Korea at the end of WWII, is raped by a Korean man. The book implies that it was not uncommon for Korean men to rape Japanese women. Highly improbable and disputable. Come on, just because it is a fiction does not mean it has to be a fantasy!3. After reading, some 6th and 7th grade students expressed anti-Korean sentiments, and some Korean-American students refused to return to school for feeling shame about their ethnicity based on how this book portrayed the Koreans. This book retaliates against another race and builds racial hatred.INTERESTING IRONY:During WWII, Japan "took" out of Korea tens-of-thousands of girls, some as young as 10-year-old to their soldiers in Japan and greater Asia as "comfort women", who were forced into prostitution. Many of them died of syphilis or committed suicide, and the survivors never returned to their families after the war because of the utter humiliation and psychological damage. Japan still claims that these "women" (not "girls") were voluntary prostitutes.

one of the best books ever

This book was not appropriate for middle school students. I don't know why the school board assigned it for summer reading!

This book taught me so many things, such as the factual history, the racial difference, survival ways, the importance of peace. There are a few comments in the notes from publisher, which many historians cannot agree with because, I assume, they have not updated some historical facts, and the book is a lack of a literary touch for adults, but it is well worth reading.

I have stayed up late several nights in a row reading this book and do not regret it. I have been working on arranging a new original song for a while now and this book has given me a lot of great ideas that I can't wait to put into practice. It has also given me insight into why my favorite songs are so catchy. Pretty much all of my favorite songs are applying the principles in this book. To be clear, even though there is a decent amount of pop song references, a lot of the rock, alternative, and metal songs have elements of the formula. Some of the ideas are intuitive to me, but I still think there is some value in consciously acknowledging the ideas and metaphorically adding them to your "toolbox" so that you can remember these techniques long after you've read the book. Definitely worth $10 if my songs turn out even slightly better than they would have had I not read this book! The automation ideas alone are worth 10 bucks... Now I just have figure out how to do some of that stuff in my DAW.

In an era of the home studio, where the role of the songwriter has expanded to vocalist, instrumentalist, recording engineer, producer, mixer, mastering engineer (I'm using the "term" engineer loosely, for those out there who have specialized in the field), and publicist, Friedemann Findeisen takes a fresh approach that treats music production (essentially, music composition in the pop music genre) as essential to this process. I found Findeisen's experience to match very well with my own, but as a Music Composition major in college, I love fleshing out the vision of my songs through music production. Findeisen lays out a path for developing musical intensity to create an emotional map for a song, with excellent graphs for every instrument, like using a brassier timbre in the vocals, moving from fingers to pick for the guitar, or expanding to include extreme lows and highs in the keys. I read through the book in under a week, and I'm not fond of reading books. This was a captivating and highly valuable read for me as a developing singer-songwriter and music producer. If you're not invested in the entire process from song idea to mastering and publication (with the greatest emphasis on production), this book might not be for you. If your a home studio kind of guy/gal with a burning desire to do it all, then pick this one up. I loved it. And yes, English isn't Findeisen's first language. There were some times in which that was apparent, but those times were fairly endearing. His command of the english language (or lack thereof) does not take away from this book one bit. He really knows his stuff.

Thanks for the book. This information is a refresher and a living guide for future productions.I recommend reading it for the sake of having a +1 knowledge. I appreciated the way Friedman tried to explain all the concepts. One suggestion only: formatting. It is good for a paperback, but not for Kindle.Plus Kindle has now the infinite scroll option - maybe a useful thing for a second version of the book? :)

Presents a workable metadata framework for creating interest in musical structures. The work summarizes cause and effect but it struggles to maintain consistency. There are several strong contradictions throughout the material (eg: initially stating energy curves are relative and show no reference to dynamics— while then stating in a later chapter that energy curves show a deep linkage to dynamics). Close reading will uncover these inconsistencies— with the risk of confusing someone without grounding in theory.Overall, the author and reader would have been better served by more rigorous proofreading. The departure from standard music terminology places the reader on something of an island which just adds unnecessary additional layers to comprehension. While this book is not a formal summary of theory— an editor grounded in theory would have spotted some of these issues and driven to a better conclusion for the reader. The sum total here is the author does a workable job at presenting an encapsulation of many useful techniques while struggling somewhat to maintain focus and consistency. This is clouded by the informal presentation and in some ways arbitrary use of new terminology. The keen reader would be well advised to extract the useful points into learnings they can port into their own compositions. In short, don’t take the issues too seriously. Reading between the lines and reformatting these learnings into your own conceptual framework will probably generate the best results.

Its a good book. However, here are my critques:1. The typos are very known in this book. Not that I'm a grammer nazi, but things like "tachnique" and other words were misspelled. I get he's german so Ich verstehe. Although I can't complain since I always mispell words or forget my punctuation.2. A big chunk of the book was pretty much fluff in my opinion.3. Some things you have to look up yourself because he didn't give enough information on some of the words he ment. For example, he said that everyone knows & even his dentist knows, what groove and rhythm is. I sorta know what rhythm is, but I do not know what's the difference between groove and rhythm was. So it's like whaatt?4. It would be nice to have a cd with some clips of the music that he is referring to on the bottom. However, I didn't mark any stars off of that simply because I don't know what the regualtions are to copy parts of some music for education purposes. It's probably a lawsuit waiting to happen so, I won't count that against him.Overall a good book to read :)

Friedemann Findeisen is a great teacher, and a very generous one.In a light hearted way, he gives you BIG value knowledge. Not only in this book, but in his blog, youtube, courses, etc.Gratitude!

Totally lacking in anything but a few very basic concepts. Not even really about songwriting. I wasn't necessarily looking for a "secret formula," but this is certainly not it. The free content that he offers elsewhere is decent, but I felt almost scammed by this book. Wish I could get my money (and time) back.

Review

A WIRED "All-Time Favorite Book"A Financial Times Best Book of 2018“Profound . . . Lanier shows the tactical value of appealing to the conscience of the individual. In the face of his earnest argument, I felt a piercing shame about my own presence on Facebook. I heeded his plea and deleted my account.”―Franklin Foer, The New York Times Book Review“Mixes prophetic wisdom with a simple practicality . . . Essential reading.”―The New York Times (Summer Reading Preview)“The title says it all . . . Lanier advocates untethering from social media, which fosters addiction and anomie and generally makes us feel worse and more fearful about each other and the world . . . The experiment could be a useful one, though it will darken the hearts of the dark lords―a winning argument all its own.” ―Kirkus Reviews“Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now is not anti-tech or even anti-phone. It is one of the most optimistic books about the Internet I’ve ever read because it dares to hope for better. Profoundly skeptical of the business model that undergirds social media, Lanier demonstrates the ways in which our social media accounts make us not consumer but product, our every connection monitored by unseen third parties who harvest our data, monetize our communication, and curate and manipulate our behavior. Another online life is possible, but first we have to destroy the one we’re trapped in. The great news is you don’t have to take to the streets―you don’t even have to leave your room. You can do it all by pressing one little key . . . A blisteringly good, urgent, essential read.” ―Zadie Smith, author of Feel Free

A book I could not put down. I read it in two days and marked up with jotted notes and underlines. Jaron Lanier has done society a great favor by exposing the insidious nature of these tools most of us feel locked into due to the network effect. As one of the early internet tech pioneers and father of virtual reality, he is more than qualified to lay out the 10 arguments against BUMMER networks (Behaviors of Users Modified, and Made into an Empire for Rent).I found the book so fascinating and compelling that I plan to keep it for reading again and referencing now and then.Every one of his arguments matched my experience using these tools over the last decade: Facebook, Twitter, instagram, anything google. I knew something was wrong beyond what the popular articles had been saying, but I could never quite put my finger on it. There were a lot of “aha” moments. He was ultimately preaching to the choir with me though, as I deleted most of my accounts last year - and I miss none of them. Most of my friends and family are still attached to the hip with BUMMER networks, like a big fundamentalist church I once belonged to. Maybe having left such churches gave me the understanding that you might leave and everyone still in the cult will look at you like you’re a lost sheep such a thing. But those of us who have left realize the freedom and joy of being a “cat” is a much better life. I have friends who still invite me back to “church” to see their pictures on Facebook. Thanks but no thanks. Life is much better on this side.

Is It Time to Quit Social Media?Jaron Lanier offers ten arguments for doing just thatBy George P. WoodLike many others, I find it difficult to imagine life without social media. I use Facebook and Twitter at work to share articles from Influence magazine, the Christian leadership magazine which I edit. They account for a large percentage of the traffic on the magazine’s website. I ignore them at professional peril.I use Facebook and Instagram at home to share information and pictures with my family and friends. They help me keep in touch with people who are important to me but don’t live close by. Although I get most of my news from websites, I also click on the links to news articles and op-eds that these people share in Facebook and Twitter. These professional and personal uses of social media sound benign, so why does my wife complain that I’m on my phone too much? Why do I feel compelled to check it compulsively throughout the day? And why do I so often feel negative emotions like sadness, anger and jealousy after spending time on Facebook?Technology always begins as a tool to help us exercise control over nature. After a while, however, it becomes our master, in effect exercising control over us. If you don’t believe me, try replacing your smartphone with a dumbphone, or try giving up social media for Lent. If you can do so, great! If not, then perhaps you have a problem.Jaron Lanier stakes out a radical position on social media in his new book, Ten Arguments for Deleting Your Social Media Accounts Right Now. Here they are in his own words:1. You are losing your free will.2. Quitting social media is the most finely targeted way to resist the insanity of our times.3. Social media is making you into a [jerk].4. Social media is undermining truth.5. Social media is making what you say meaningless.6. Social media is destroying your capacity for empathy.7. Social media is making you unhappy.8. Social media doesn’t want you to have economic dignity.9. Social media is making politics impossible.10. Social media hates your soul.Lanier is not an anti-technology Luddite by any stretch of the imagination. He is a computer scientist — a founding father of virtual reality, in fact — and is well regarded throughout Silicon Valley.Nor is he writing from a religious perspective, despite his usage of terms like free will and soul. He’s not religious in any conventional sense, as far as I can tell. His political opinions are far to the left of mine and those of the readers of my magazine. And his occasional use of profanity — I had to come up with a less offensive term for Argument 3 above — can be distracting. So, why would I recommend Christian leaders — pastors, educators, etc. — to read this book? I can think of at least three reasons.First, Lanier is concerned with issues related to the common good. Lanier’s ten arguments are morally fraught. They deal with the character of the individual in relationship to others, especially on matters of public importance. No one wants to live in a society overrun with unempathetic jerks who twist the truth and tell lies, robbing workers of their economic dignity and politics of its effectiveness, all the while making everyone deeply unhappy. Right?Second, Lanier’s sixth arguments is that social media destroys people’s capacity for empathy. It does this by cocooning users in a “filter bubble” where they are increasingly exposed only to others whose viewpoints expressly match their own. This exacerbates the tendency to lump people into “us” and “them,” where “we” are always on the side of righteousness and “they” are always on the side of wickedness. When we break out of that bubble and deal with real people and their actual arguments, we realize that reality is more complex that social media lets on. Because “they” also are concerned with the common good, “we” can make common cause on issues where we agree, even as we realize that we will continue to disagree (strongly, even) on other issues.Third, as a tech “insider,” Lanier has unique insight into the business model that drives social media and leads to such negative results. He calls his explanation “the BUMMER machine,” where BUMMER is an acronym for “Behaviors of Users Modified, and Made into an Empire for Rent.”Think of it this way: Facebook and other social media provide its services free to billions of users. How can it afford to do that? Because its users are not its customers, they are its products. Social media sucks up an enormous amount of data about you — birthdate, address, location, workplace, political interests, searches, friendship networks, etc. — repackages it and sells it to others. Some of these users, social media’s actual customers, have largely benign goals, i.e., marketing and selling affordable products you’re interested in. Others — Lanier cites the Cambridge Analytica particularly — have less benign goals. To make money, social media have to figure out ways to keep you coming back for more, which it does through constant surveillance and subtle manipulation. This is the point of argument 1 about the loss of free will. As Sean Parker, the first president of Facebook, once explained it: “We need to sort of give you a little dopamine hit every once in a while, because someone liked or commented on a photo or a post or whatever…. It’s a social validation feedback loop…exactly the kind of thing that a hacker like myself would come up with, because you’re exploiting a vulnerability in human psychology….”Some things, once you see them, cannot be unseen. For me, Lanier’s book had that quality. It made me think about social media, my use of them, and what widespread usage of them are doing to us in a new and disturbing way. I haven’t been fully persuaded to delete my social media accounts, obviously, since you’re reading this on one social medium or another. But perhaps drawing attention to Lanier’s arguments will help in some small way to resist social media’s BUMMER tendencies and contribute to a happier, healthier, and more humane common culture.

Oh man, this is such an important, timely book. However, it's rambling and too quirky. Why didn't a good editor help the author polish this book? The writing style will limit its reach. That being said, the information and insights about our relationship to social media and what it's doing to our society are spot on. It's worth working your way through. It will help you understand the treacherous place we've gotten ourselves into as a culture. And it will help you deconstruct your own relationship with social media to decide if you have to draw the line.

I deleted all my SM accounts a few months ago and was experiencing some regret... until I came across this marvelously insightful book. The funny thing is you only recall the good things about FB, etc on a surface level but after a few months, I have to say my inner and social life have both dramatically improved. I also have actual free time again - i.e. I get my work done and then have time to read, to watch something, to hike, to surf. SM had distracted me soo much over such a long period of time I did not notice how all those 1, 5, 10, 15 minute sessions "just checking" added up.
