As of late, I have been on a reading binge that focuses on New York City in late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thai Jones' "More Powerful Than Dynamite" stands out as, indeed, the most powerful, but Mike Dash's "Satan's Circus: Murder, Vice, Police Corruption, and New York's Trial of the Century" came in second by only a neck.While I am used to reading about the courtroom shenanigans that go on these days (and while I am also tired of seeing books that have "[fill in the blank] of the Century" in the title), the Satanic circus presented in Dash's lively prose is jaw-dropping. If you don't know anything about the Rosenthal/Becker case, be prepared for a wild ride of police and judicial abuse that will stun you.The book is wisely divided into two sections: the murder of the annoying big-shot-gambler-wannabe, Herman Rosenthal, and the trial of the bullying, "grafting" Lieutenant Charles Becker for the crime. Each section is populated by colorful characters with colorful names, each moving in their own orbits around Herman Rosenthal, Lt. Becker, Tammany Hall, the immigrant population, and the neighborhood known as Satan's Circus (a/k/a, "The Tenderloin"). A good deal of referenced material surrounds each of these. The footnotes and the notes section themselves contain anecdotes and histories that round out and polish up everything. This meticulous dedication to the background of people and events may be off-putting to some but I found it admirable and responsible, especially when the legal wrangling kicks in.The overall effects are sadness and infuriating frustration for the defendant. No, Becker was not the nicest of guys and, perhaps, he really did have something to do with Rosenthal's assassination. And, yet, the evidence is just too shaky. The dubious criminals who implicated Becker, the ambitious and zealous D.A. Charles Whitman and the cop-hating judges (Goff, more than Seabury) bent the truth and the rules ever so much to guarantee Becker's conviction. More than that, however, it seemed everything conspired to send Becker to an early grave. Tammany's slow demise, the death of Big Tim Sullivan, the promotion of DA Whitman to Governor Whitman... all seemed to push Becker along to the hot seat. His long-suffering wife, Helen, is also victim to all this, although she is not as innocent as she wanted to seem. In fact, no one is innocent. ALMOST everyone deserves the fate dealt them. Some should have suffered but didn't. Others were dragged down in the whirlpool.Enough. I don't want to give away more than I may have already. But, wow, there is so much more that I have hardly touched upon. If you want to read more about what truly earned the title of "Trial of the Century", Dash's book is the place.

In this book the reader is introduced to the seamy side of New York City life at the turn of the 20th century, and how the police force at that time was intimately connected with the many types of vice in the city. There were payoffs and rigged arrests, and also murders, for this was serious business to those folks.The book eventually concerns itself with a police lieutenant named Charlie Becker, who is accused of murder (the author doesn't believe he was involved) and after two trials was eventually executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing. Around this tale the author weaves a story of such corruption that it seems almost unbelieveable, and yet it happened.It's fascinating to read about how "the system" operated back then, and how the police, and the vice lords, interacted to see that vice was left alone for the most part, and many police, particularly the higher ranks, made an extreme amount of money for the time, and eventually retired to a life of near luxury. Perhaps they were not so different from many happenings today, except that its not as well reported as it was then, when many newspapers in New York fought out circulation wars by trying to "dig up the dirt" first, and thus sell more papers than the competition.Read this book. I feel sure that you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Author Mike Dash has provided us with a thorough description of the corruption and vice in New York City, specifically the Times Square area (Satan's Circus) at the turn of the 20th century. Lieutenant Charley Becker's effort to cover up his graft by eliminating gambler Herman Rosenthal, who planned on blowing the whistle on Becker's crookedness, is covered in great detail. The characters in this book are many with the personality of each given in great detail. Prosecutor Charles Whitman went all out to convict Becker while hoping to advance his own political career. His goal to achieve the presidency of the United States was not achieved, but he did become the two time governor of New York. Ironically he was the one who Becker had to appeal to for a pardon from the then governor Whitman. Judge John Goff, all full of himself and drunk with the power of his position, went out of his way to favor the prosecution in Becker's trial. Becker's case was appealed and he received a new trial, but was convicted once again mainly on the basis of a conference a witness heard at a Harlem Conference regarding the case. Four shady characters with nicknames such as Lefty Louie, Whitey, Dago Frank, and Gyp the Blood, were Rosenthal's actual assassins while others such as gamblers Bald Jack Rose and Jack Zelig made the necessary arrangements. This is a story of the murder of Herman Rosenthal, the corruption of the New York police department, and the trial that sent a police lieutenant and the four hired hands to the electric chair in Sing Sing prison. A definite plus of the book is the inclusion of maps of Manhattan in the front to show the location of key events in the story. I am rating this book five stars, but it does have one definite drawback. There are seven photos and one drawing at the front of the book of key players in the story. Photos of the actual murderers and other key individuals should have been included as well. Another book on this subject entitled "The Execution of Officer Becker" by Stanley Cohen included photos of the murderers, the Tombs jail in lower Manhattan, the Bridge of Sighs, and other photos showing New York City during this time period. Both of these books on this subject should find a permanent place in your library.

This book is next in line to my bible! The writer puts it out there in language everyone can understand. It is written with the average lay person in mind. When you are caught off guard, this book will help you to make sense of it all. First part describing the narcissist is right on. The second part is all about now how do you protect yourself and your family? Absolutely perfect instructions and directions to help navigate through the maze of courts, lawyers and counselors. It really opened my eyes to the legal system. I realized the saddest thing. You are not innocent until proven guilty. If someone lies against you, you are guilty until you prove yourself innocent! This book will help you do just that. Knowledge is power. This book will empower you to help yourself and make good decisions.

Good book. But I'm not convinced that a narcissist PD parent even under the pilot program can be prevented from harming the children emotionally as long as they have access to them alone. Since when does a narcissist/antisocial respond to or cooperate with therapy? Such personality disorders are practically incurable. It's about time that the mental health professionals stand up and acknowledge that the narcissists emotional abuse of his children is as damaging as physical abuse and that documented physical abuse of the other parent is a basis for concluding that the abusive spouse will likely also abuse of the children in an effort to control the other parent. As noted in the book, it's all about control and winning for these sick individuals and the kids are just pawns in a game. Children are emotionally defenseless, and the system presently ensures that even a good healthy parent with resources cannot protect them from this emotional abuse. The fact is that the system presently leaves the children to handle this themselves...when they have grown up and are already damaged. The healthy parent has probably been completely alienated from the children by that time. So In the interest of preserving the narcissist parent's access to the children alone, the children end up damaged and disconnected from their healthy parent, the only one that could have helped them. If the goal is to protect children with a narcissist PD parent, on-going supervised visitation needs to be central to the pilot program and the law behind the pilot program. The expense of supervision should be borne by the narcissistic parent.

I was recommended this book by a friend who said it may help with some anxiety I have been having when dealing with an ex. She said it related back to narcissism and this book would be a great read to enlighten me on better ways to deal with the less than ideal situation. It was a great read and definitely gave me insight into not only the crazy of my ex and his narcissism, but also so insight into myself and my life. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone who has questions about narcissism and better ways to cope with these types of situations.

Educating yourself about Narcissistic Personality Disorder will change your life! If you are in a relationship with a narcissist your troubles are worse than you know. Understanding the phenomena is not just important in your marriage/divorce. You deal with more narcissists in your day to day life than you realize. They are masters of deceit and they are drawn to altruistic people that they can take advantage of. I wish I could have read this book 39 years ago, when I was busy making the choice that would destroy my life. I wish the program to educate the court system, that Dr. McBride proposes in this book, was in place now. My estranged wife first made it clear that she was positioning for a divorce 17 years ago. I spent years, to no avail, trying to save the marriage for the sake of the children. She has been using the court system to destroy me for over 12 years. She is a family law attorney and is represented by a friend. She hasn't had to spend a dime. I have spent over $250,000 on attorneys so far with no end in sight. She weaponized my kids and they haven't spoken to me in over 11 years. They were minors when the court case started. Now they are grown up and my daughter got married without me. My estranged wife very convincingly plays the victim for every judge that we have been in front of, and it works. In 12 years of rulings, not a single one has gone in my favor. Twice she has gotten judges to ignore the law and give her title interest in my legally separate property, based on nothing but her testimony. I always think the court will see through her constant barrage of pejorative attacks on my character, but it works for her. In every ruling for the last 12 years, the judges have found her to be credible and me to not be credible, in spite of solid evidence supporting me. The way the court system works, there is no avenue available to me to demonstrate to the court who she really is. Even if my attorneys could see the value of it, and the court would allow it, I can't afford to bring a professional in to enlighten the court. Judges need to learn to identify the problem. All of the earmarks are there in my case. I hope Dr. McBride's proposed model for a program becomes a reality someday. I am dealing with true evil and there is no authority in the justice system I can turn to for help. At least I understand what I'm dealing with now. Educate yourself and stop being a victim. Since this started I have found my soulmate and have everything I need to be truly happy. I just need to lose my narcissist and I hope that my children see things more clearly some day. If I had it to do over, and had this book, I'm sure the outcome would be better. Thank you Dr. McBride.

This book is AWFUL! I have many books on creative culinary and this one is just the pits. Really lousy photography. They don't give recipes. They don't give tips. Half the book is full of nonsense about the creating chef of the dish. Who cares about that!! I have absolutely nothing good to say about this book. Basically, they are saying, make this (but don't tell you how), stick it on a plate, and serve it.

Poor step by step instruction.

I have to say the claims made about the book hooked me....in a big way. Being a culinary student and wanting reference material to help me perfect the skill of plating, I thought this book would be a great addition to my library. I was wrong....way wrong. It is very light in content....I was looking for a book that talked about plating....this had claims for foodies and culinary students. I would say that if you fit this demographic then you are already further advanced in your plating skills. The book is very basic....basic enough that I would say it doesn't deserve the title..."Working the Plate". I read it cover to cover....which takes about 1 hour. Truly a disappointment.Lofty claims.....light on content......not what I was looking for. If you are looking for a good book on plating your money would be better spent elsewhere.

If you graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, you don't need this book. I didn't, and I like the book a lot.I am a food photographer (on-site, mostly casual dining independent restaurants) and work without benefit of a stylist. I want to know how to make things look good on the plate. But if I use these techniques it will be mostly for meals I prepare for family and friends.The photography: Mostly excellent, but inconsistent and sometimes featuring shockingly, weirdly shallow depth of field. Shallow depth of field is an accepted technique in food photography. This means objects too close or too far from the camera's focal range are blurry. In a studio the photographer almost always has control over the depth of field. Anything that is out of focus in this book should be that way because the photographer intended it to be so. For example, the Sesame-Crusted Shrimp and Roll-Cut Asparagus Salad (page 91) is all about how to prepare the asparagus. The asparagus is mostly in focus, while the shrimp behind it is not. This photo works.But this is not the case with the Braised Lamb Shank with Saffron-pea Risotto (page 69). Only a little bit of the lamb shank is sharp. None of the risotto is and none of the swirls and sauce. I can picture the art director weeping, arguing with the editor and the photographer and finally being crushed into accepting that it would be too costly and time consuming to go back and reshoot the photo. It was a costly decision, as many people see that bad photo and reject the entire book.Low camera angles? Nothing wrong with that. It is old-fashioned and discredited to think the food photos should all be shot at the same viewing angle as the diner experiences the plate. People see the food at all angles. It is brought to the table at eye level, it then descends to the table. Other plates are placed before people to the sides or across the table. The guest actually sees the food in various ways before digging in and that is part of the excitement of the presentation.

If you haven't read the first, start with "The Eye of the World". As one progresses through the series more and more characters are added which may be daunting for new readers of fantasy, but all the characters stories are interesting and move the plot along nicely.Names of places and people can be confusing for those not used to fantasy writing, but the author conveniently provides a pronunciation guide at the end of the novel that can easily be referenced (although the presence of such a thing is telling in-and-of itself).This series as a whole has everything one could wish for from high fantasy: action, magic, politics, history, relationships, character growth, triumph, betrayal, hope, tragedy, comedy. Not as dark as A Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones), not as light as Narnia, not as magical as Harry Potter, not as political as Malazan, and not as historical as Lord of the Rings. However, what this series accomplishes is a blend of all of these in a masterful work of art that is unrivaled in balance across themes.RIP Robert Jordan, may your work be preserved from the turning of the wheel to delight future generations, time without end.

The Great Hunt improves upon the first book in every conceivable way. The Eye of the World was really good, but it had some pacing issues, and it had to wrestle with the fact that to get it's foot in the door it had to be very Tolkien-esque. The Great Hunt on the other hand is a great book. It's like Jordan got the first one out of the way, sat down, and said, 'Okay, let's open this thing up.' I think I am now starting to see The Wheel of Time's true colors shine through, and it was very satisfying to watch.This is an extremely well-paced book. The reader can take a pretty good guess what is going to happen during its plot, and yet it doesn't totally fall to predictability. And even the things that I did see coming were still fun. While the first book plods along a bit at the beginning, this one moves naturally and flows through its builds and its releases. We already know most all of the characters (including a couple I did not expect to see again), and so we are able to just sit back and take in the story. I mentioned it above but I really feel like the series is starting to form its own identity with this installment. The world is opened up in new and interesting ways (Portal Stones/Mirrors of the Wheel immediately come to mind, as do the Seanchan and their exotic culture), and Jordan's skill as a writer is apparent in several powerful, trippy scenes. Jordan is not shying away from the freedom that a story based on cycles and cycles, years and years of time and events gives him. And the nature of the One Power (as we discover more about it alongside the characters) gives way to some very cool scenes.I believe the hook is in me now. And having just ended the second installment I am eager to see where the story goes next. On to The Dragon Reborn.Death is lighter than a feather, duty heavier than a mountain.Let the Dragon ride again on the winds of time.

When I saw that this novel comprised some 14 individual books (all at least 700 pages each, small print), I had second thoughts. Reading something this extensive would probably take me a year. And if it turns out to be uninteresting? Worse. Well, I could not have been more wrong. The story is absolutely fascinating, electrifying, hypnotic. I've already sped through the first two books in about as many weeks. I cannot recommend this novel series enough. If you enjoy high fantasy (not that Harry Potter nonsense), such as Lord of the Rings, etc., then this is the novel series for you. In places, the pace is very slow, but this is good, because the narrative pulls you into character and details you just know you will need later on in order to understand everything. Yes, it is a very complex story, but this also is good. It's like digging in to the richest, most well prepared, multi-course dinner you've ever eaten. And every bite counts. Again, if you loved Lord of the Rings, you will definitely love this novel series.

I could not decide between 3 and 4 stars; for me, this book is really teetering on the edge of "it's okay," and "I like it."I gave the first book of the series three stars because of the slow start, tedious journey, and strange ending. The Great Hunt is more of the same, and that's why I decided on three stars. Don' t get me wrong, there are some really great parts to this story, but for every great chapter, there is another chapter full of filler or exposition.The things that I didn't like about the first book are still present here: the overly-described items and scenery, the too-long journey, and I didn't really like the ending. The ending of the first book was just strange, while the problem with this one was that it just felt rushed despite the almost 600 pages it took to get there.I wasn't sure I wanted to read on to this book after the first in the series, and I'm feeling that way again about the third part to the series: The Dragon Reborn. I feel more happy that it's over than a desire to continue.

What can I say about the wheel of time series that hasn't already been said. This book continues on the story of Rand and the rest of his gang. This series is fantastic and really paints a picture of the world that the book is set in. Everything is described in vivid detail. I'm currently on book 4 as I'm writing this and I will just say this. To those of you who are contemplating stopping after reading book 1. Give Book 2 and for that matter Book 3 a shot. I think Book 2 Is the best one so far, and it solidified my interest in this series. As someone who never really read a series of this size (14 books) its a little intimidating but now I am determined to find out what happens and Book 2 really gets you addicted to this series and Book 3 on further enhances that addiction.
