This book is well written, with lots of recipes. It is great for anyone who loves ice cream and cold desserts. That being said, I tried a couple of the ice cream recipes but my husband was not impressed, he liked many of the recipes I found online for free better. Its a good book but if you look online you will find many recipes that are just as good if not better, it all depends on what you like.

I ordered this book along with my ice cream machine. After all, who doesn't love Ben & Jerry's? I had bought the pint containers from the grocery store as a special treat; now I can make my favorite flavors at home.I started out by making the French vanilla. It was good and creamy. I also have made coffee, peach, butter pecan, last night made chocolate, and am looking forward to making my favorite, coffee Heath bar crunch. All have worked out well. The butter pecan is the best butter pecan I've ever tasted, by far.The recipes are extremely easy — no cooking, no pre-chilling in an ice bath, no separating whites and yolks of eggs — all processes I've found in other ice cream books. It's surprisingly easy for the product you get. Many of the classic Ben & Jerry recipes, such as Cherry Garcia, are found here. What will I try next? There are some great looking cantaloupes at the fruit stand and that recipe intrigues me.I'd recommend this book to all ice cream makers, from the novice to the connoisseur.

Ok, this book is awesome and worthy of the hype. I've made several of the recipes using our Breville ice cream maker, and they're all excellent and relatively very easy / fast to make. That said, we also bought two other books -- "The Perfect Scoop" and "Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones." The recipes in those books call for a different type of "base," in which you heat the cream, use egg yolks (instead of entire eggs or no eggs), etc. In turn, that type of base leads to a creamier, smoother ice cream. So, when I have the time, I make the base from one of the other books, while using the "flavoring" parts of the recipes from this book. Either way, I seriously couldn't go back to buying or eating store-bought ice cream after making the ice creams in this book.

LOVE THIS BOOK! It is great ice cream, and very easy to make. I took choc, strawberry and vanilla to a party, and every one love it, and why not? It is Ben and Jerry. Hello :) I end up giving the left overs away. I even make ice cream for my dogs, but I used coconut milk and cream instead of milk and heavy cream in the French Vanilla recipe. Next time I will try use agave instead of sugar. I try the coconut ice cream and it was great. I am lactose intolerant, so will work for me too. I used one can each of coconut milk and coconut cream. Buy it you will love it!

I love B&J's the company and ice cream and I love this book--it's filled with great recipes (yes, old favorites, including Cherry Garcia) and B&J's origin story at the beginning is fun to read and even, I might say, conveys some good life lessons. What kept me from giving the book five stars is this: The recipes for Sweet Cream Bases 1, 2, and 3 (found on pages 28 - 29) are incomplete. More specifically, recipes 1 and 3 seem to be missing instructions for the cooking portion of the process. I came to this conclusion because recipe 2 says, "This simple recipe is made with a minimum of ingredients and requires no cooking." Okay, got it--and the implication that recipes 1 and 3 DO require cooking. The problem is that neither of those recipes provides instructions for cooking. Both of them end with whisking and blending ingredients. Shouldn't recipes 1 and 3 end with instructions along the lines of, "Pour mixture into a sauce pan and cook..."???? Maybe everyone else knows how to cook ice cream, but this book was the only "textbook" I got with my first ice cream maker, and I surely don't know what to do after whisking and blending if cooking is required for these recipes before chilling and then churning.

I have never made ice cream before I bought this book. The recipes are SO easy, so basic, a beginner would have no problem making these recipes. If you like Ben & Jerry's ice cream, you will be very happy to know that these recipes taste exactly like the store-bought ice cream. The hot fudge recipe is the MOST delicious, amazing hot fudge I have ever had, and it takes no corn syrup. They even include little stories about Ben, Jerry, and their brand. It's adorable and I love this book.

The recipes in this cook book are easy to follow, even if you have zero cooking experience. You just need an ice cream maker and access to a good grocery store with a lot of variety to acquire some of the ingredients – this is great if you are looking for something other than your usual vanilla / chocolate or plain ice cream recipes.

I've been using some of the basics now several time and love my ice cream. I am new to home made ice cream. I so much missed hazelnut ice cream which started my journey. After some you tube videos on it and this book with the basic foundation, I made the best hazelnut ice cream I've ever had and that is a big deal to me. So, thanks for this book. Lots more to explore but got to be careful not to gain weight eating all this wonderful home made ice cream, a dangerous path.

This book has been my go-to for favorite standard flavors and is a good launching point for my personal, inspired flavor creations. I have the Cuisinart Compressor Ice Cream Maker which works perfectly. I looked at a bunch of recipe books, even bought a few, but honestly stick with Ben & Jerry's. I use totally free-range, organic eggs and have had no problems with bacteria. Happy, healthy hens produce better tasting, safer eggs. I keep looking for the eggs in a carton that are pasteurized in a way that doesn't make them useless for ice cream, but I can't find them where I live. I guess I will try the cooked custard-type of ice cream but it's such a lot of trouble compared to Ben & Jerry's recipes. Bottom line is this is a great book for your ice cream making efforts. Start here.

“What the commission has done is put together the most comprehensive narrative of what happened, both before and after the April 20 event. The commission has employed excellent investigators and has presented its findings in a clear, readable, insightful tale.” – Joel Achenbach, Achenblog, Washington Post, January 6, 2011From today’s (January 7, 2011) NYT editorial: “The document released Wednesday by the presidential commission investigating last spring’s oil blowout in the Gulf of Mexico is a riveting and chilling indictment of “systemic failures” throughout the oil business and of the federal agencies that allowed themselves to be captured by the people they were supposed to regulate.”http://www.kansascity.com/2011/02/23/2676379/commentary-bps-leftover-spill.html#The Kansas City Star    --- Posted February 23, 2011, 10:41 amCommentary: BP's leftover spill oil must be cleaned up now by The Bradenton Herald

From the Back Cover

On April 20, 2010, the Macondo oil well blew out, costing the lives of 11 men, and beginning a catastrophe that sank the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig and spilled over 4 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The spill disrupted an entire region's economy, damaged fisheries and crucial habitats, and brought vividly to light the risks of deepwater drilling for oil and gas, the latest frontier in the national energy supply. Soon after, President Barack Obama appointed a seven-member commission to investigate the disaster, analyze its causes and effects, and recommend the actions necessary to minimize such risks in the future. The Commission's report offers the American public and policymakers alike the fullest account available of what happened in the Gulf and why, and proposes actions--changes in company behavior, reform of government oversight, and investments in research and technology--required as industry moves forward to meet the nation's energy needs.Complementary reports, staff background papers, hearing records, and and other materials produced by the Commission are available at www.oilspillcommision.gov

I'm very disappointed. I expected to receive the movie not a computer document. Buyers be wear

Required for an offshore class I'm taking. Interesting read. Very insightful and keeps attention better than a normal text book.

Wow. Just wow. It's hard to believe that in today's oilfield, companies can be so reckless with concerns for safety. The commission leaves no stone un-turned, and explains the painfully obvious errors made by BP, Halliburton, and TransOcean in full detail. As usual, the mainstream media didn't accurately explain the root causes of the disaster, but this book sure does. After reading, attempting to understand how BP is allowed to continue operations in the U.S. is beyond me. The commission did an excellent job (in my opinion) of investigating the incident, reporting on it, and recommending corrective actions on behalf of companies and government regulatory agencies.

Every scientist, engineer, and concerned citizen should read this clearly written and engaging report. Unfortuately, the binding of this tradeback book is defective - the pages become unbound when the book is opened. I returned my first copy only to recieve a replacement with the identical problem. Deep Water is available on-line for free if you don't want to spend $39.00 for a potentialy unusable hard copy. Also read the Chief Counsel's Report and BP's Internal Report, which are also available on-line.

This book was substituted without warning or notice for my Kindle order of The Man in the Gray Flannel suit. Literally, it is a bait-and-switch. Check it out if you are curious - search for The Man in the Gray Flannel suit (book, not movie), and then try to select Kindle edition - you get switched to this Deep Water report. It is a clear link error, and there is no way to report it to Amazon. So, the report I don't want is getting the worst review I can give it. The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit

This report is the outcome of an intense six-month bipartisan effort to determine the disaster's causes and improve our ability to respond to spills. Its authors concluded that the well's loss could have been prevented, its blowout can be traced to a systematic series of mistakes made by BP and its contractors, necessitates reform of regulatory oversight of deep-water oil production, and requires that industry and government develop improved means of spill cleanup - unchanged even 20 years after the Exxon Valdez. Stated alternatively, it is inappropriate to single out any single misstep as the cause of the Deepwater explosion, and doing so would encourage unjustified complacency going forward. The report is divided into three sections: Chapters 1-3 describe the events of 4/20/2010, and the events leading up to in the preceding decades - especially how expansion of deepwater drilling in the Gulf was not met by capable regulatory oversight.Chapters 4-7 highlight issues believed must guide policy in engineering, spill response, and the impacts of the spill. Finally, chapters 8-10 present the Commission's recommendations for business practice reform, regulatory oversight, and broader policy concerns.

Before you read my review you should know that I was a PCV in the 70's en Cote d'Ivoirve and had a great experience. Also, during my time in West Africa I traveled to Togo which I found to be a real interesting place, thus my comments may seem a bit bias. I loved this book for all the wrong reasons. Poor George Packer did just about everything possible to assure that his Peace Corps experience would be a real "train wreck". I give him credit for even writing a book like this. I would recommend this book to anyone considering joining the Peace Corps as a guide for what not to do. I will not spoil the book for potential readers by picking apart his missteps. I am somewhat surprised that he was ever allowed to join up in the first place. As you read this book have some fun trying to figure out at what point Packer is going to 'pack it in' and under what circumstances. Sadly, from my own observations of other Peace Corps Volunteers, George's story is more common than one might think.

I have been a fan of the writing of journalist George Packer, notably his reporting for The New Yorker and his book of reporting on the Iraq War, The Assassin's Gate. When I heard that he wrote a Peace Corps memoir, The Village Of Waiting (1988), about his experiences in the West African country of Togo I was interested to read his perspective about it. Already his reporting and narrative story telling was strong. The reader learns a lot about the country, community, and the exasperation of Africa from the perspective of a white westerner. It was a powerful experience in the per-internet days and it was a testament to his resolve that he lasted over a year-he did not complete his assignment, he failed to return for his last six months after taking a trip to Europe. Similarly another Peace Corps inspired book from another writer I liked, Chasing The Sea by Tom Bissell in Uzbekistan, also was ultimately about a failed Peace Corps stint where he basically had a nervous breakdown and was inspired to go back and find closure in the country. This is a different book from that one, but in the Afterword by the author we learn about how the country and the people he met there continued to be a significant part of his life as he returned to report there and help the friends that he made there over time. These experiences were exasperating and soul crushing in the recounting of struggles and set backs these people encountered over the years. In that sense the last part calls to mind Paul Theroux's exasperation with Africa in his last foray into the country that defeats him and sends him home packing before he planned to go home in Last Train To Zona Verde. There's also a Foreword by Philip Gourevitch, another reporter and writer about Africa that I respect. I found this to be a powerful first person account full of detailed descriptions of life in Africa in the early 80s from the point of view of an idealistic Peace Corps volunteer.

I fully understood what George Packer went through as a PCV in Togo as I am a former Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) as well! He wrote very well. It seemed Africa will continue to have the same problems so long as their leaders show no or very little interest to work for the betterment of their country and their people. But I like reading his experience in Togo as well as his accounts on travels to other countries. I like his writing style. As an outsider, he was very astute in his observation on the country and the people he associated with, including his students, colleagues, neighbors and friends he made in Togo.

If you want to read a heart-rending story that outlines the very differing lives of children living in poverty, you'll enjoy this book. It is well written and portrays a vivid and realistic picture of what life is like for children who must scramble around for life's necessities. Have your Kleenex handy, though.

If you want to cast moral judgement on George Packer, don't read this book. If you want to read the best Peace Corps book ever written, at least about life in Africa, then pick up this book. I lived in Guinea in the mid-90s, while Packer was in Togo in the early 80s. Yet I felt like he was describing my own village, my own frustrations, my own thoughts and feelings (save the prostitute). This was the book that convinced me not to write a book about my own experience. He did it, only better.

This book was a very good read. The feelings the author struggles with resonate with me. I also very much appreciated that he did not sugar coat his experience. Few PC volunteers (or expats more generally) admit to these things, and it's good someone put them in (well-written, well thought out) words.

Another good Peace Corps book that is well written and gives you a much better idea of the problems and challenges of third world nations than any newspaper article ever will

This book is incredible. It's at once funny and poignant. Its descriptions of Togo are spot on - Packer paints a vividly realistic portrait of his experiences in that country. He's also honest about himself and his reactions - he paints himself and his reactions to his surroundings in an unvarnished light. This touching account of his experiences makes for very rewarding reading.

The Five People You Meet in Heaven, by Mitch Albom

Amazon.com Review

Part melodrama and part parable, Mitch Albom's The Five People You Meet in Heaven weaves together three stories, all told about the same man: 83-year-old Eddie, the head maintenance person at Ruby Point Amusement Park. As the novel opens, readers are told that Eddie, unsuspecting, is only minutes away from death as he goes about his typical business at the park. Albom then traces Eddie's world through his tragic final moments, his funeral, and the ensuing days as friends clean out his apartment and adjust to life without him. In alternating sections, Albom flashes back to Eddie's birthdays, telling his life story as a kind of progress report over candles and cake each year. And in the third and last thread of the novel, Albom follows Eddie into heaven where the maintenance man sequentially encounters five pivotal figures from his life (a la A Christmas Carol). Each person has been waiting for him in heaven, and, as Albom reveals, each life (and death) was woven into Eddie's own in ways he never suspected. Each soul has a story to tell, a secret to reveal, and a lesson to share. Through them Eddie understands the meaning of his own life even as his arrival brings closure to theirs. Albom takes a big risk with the novel; such a story can easily veer into the saccharine and preachy, and this one does in moments. But, for the most part, Albom's telling remains poignant and is occasionally profound. Even with its flaws, The Five People You Meet in Heaven is a small, pure, and simple book that will find good company on a shelf next to It's A Wonderful Life. --Patrick O'Kelley

From Publishers Weekly

"At the time of his death, Eddie was an old man with a barrel chest and a torso as squat as a soup can," writes Albom, author of the bestselling phenomenon Tuesdays with Morrie, in a brief first novel that is going to make a huge impact on many hearts and minds. Wearing a work shirt with a patch on the chest that reads "Eddie" over "Maintenance," limping around with a cane thanks to an old war injury, Eddie was the kind of guy everybody, including Eddie himself, tended to write off as one of life's minor characters, a gruff bit of background color. He spent most of his life maintaining the rides at Ruby Pier, a seaside amusement park, greasing tracks and tightening bolts and listening for strange sounds, "keeping them safe." The children who visited the pier were drawn to Eddie "like cold hands to a fire." Yet Eddie believed that he lived a "nothing" life-gone nowhere he "wasn't shipped to with a rifle," doing work that "required no more brains than washing a dish." On his 83rd birthday, however, Eddie dies trying to save a little girl. He wakes up in heaven, where a succession of five people are waiting to show him the true meaning and value of his life. One by one, these mostly unexpected characters remind him that we all live in a vast web of interconnection with other lives; that all our stories overlap; that acts of sacrifice seemingly small or fruitless do affect others; and that loyalty and love matter to a degree we can never fathom. Simply told, sentimental and profoundly true, this is a contemporary American fable that will be cherished by a vast readership. Bringing into the spotlight the anonymous Eddies of the world, the men and women who get lost in our cultural obsession with fame and fortune, this slim tale, like Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, reminds us of what really matters here on earth, of what our lives are given to us for.Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

#14,526 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is by far my favorite book in the world. I'm an avid reader, but this was the most significant book at a point in my life (high school) where I was lost, confused, searching for my place in the world, and reeling for the loss of my grandmother, who was one of the most important people in my life. I was searching for a faith in something, and I picked up this book. It changed everything. The premise of the book is that when you die, you meet five people. They are not always the five most important people in your life (parents, grandparents, spouses, children, etc), but sometimes people who you met in passing or who you'd rather forget. Sometimes it's someone you don't really even know. But they're always someone who has had an important impact on your life.In The Five People You Meet in Heave, the story follows Eddie as he meets his five people and his life's meaning is revealed to him. He meets five people, only one of who he really would have thought would be on his 'five people' list. The story is heartbreaking and moving and life affirming. I am still a sobbing mess every time I re-read it. I can't tell you how many highlights and pencil marks my hard copy of this has, and probably just as many for my kindle version. Yes, I have both a hard copy and a kindle version. I treasure my original copy, but love having the digital version at my fingertips everywhere I go. This book is THAT good. It's the kind of book you pass along to a friend who is struggling or a teenager in need of guidance and searching for the meaning of life. If you only read one book, make it this one!

I read this book, because it was assigned to my children for the summer. I expected a good story, but I didn't expect such real characters or the beautiful imagery that makes you feel like you're there. There are words of wisdom throughout the book, but the main message is absolutely beautiful. I would like to be more specific. However, I feel like that would spoil the book for future readers. I gave this book five stars, because I feel like I received a hug from heaven. It really blew me away. Read it and listen to it on Audible.

Oh my gosh! I loved reading this book! It makes you think about so many things in your life. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly religious in any sense, just a very interested way to think of heaven and why things happened to you while you were alive. I will recommend this book for the reat of my life and I can’t wait to read it again. It is a very quick read. I couldn’t put it down!! You will love it!

This book was recommended to me and it took me 3 years to buy it, always in the back of my mind of something to do but never done. Then when I finally got it, I consumed it in one morning. I’m not usually a big reader honestly this is the 3rd or so book I’ve read cover to cover since I was in school but I simply could not put this book down! It is such a powerful book it moved me to tears many times reading it. I can’t recomend it enough!

This book is not new and has been reviewed hundreds of times so I'll keep my thoughts short and sweet on it.When Eddie died in a tragic accident he met five different people that intersected his life in one way or another. They were meant to give him clarity and answer the question "Why was I here?" Some of the people were expected but others were not.The Five People You Meet in Heaven was a short and easy book to read. I flew through the pages and was anxious to know who Eddie would meet and what they would bring to the table. Many things about his life were explained and he was given clarity on a number of things as well.I enjoyed every minute of this book. It doesn't get preachy or speak of religion but tells one story of what could possibly happen after the end. I appreciate that about it and therefore think that it would appeal to a large number of people.

Just coming off a recent read of "A Forgotten Man" by J. Pepper Bryars - which touched me deeply - and left me grieving for the 'middle class' in America - at the hands of an out-of-control Government Leviathan - in a very sad sort of way.I found this wonderful story, this simple, touching and inventive view by Mitch Albom - an author - with a vivid imagination - of a fictional heaven - where ones life, their purpose and their interconnection with the world and their fellow human beings is explained to them - through a series of story telling by those (selected by someone else - unexplained - God Maybe) who (known or unknown) were affected by one's life or that affected the main character's life throughout his or her life experiences quite refreshing. Where decisions, actions and/or inaction in various ways along their path made a big difference in that persons adventure, successes and failures. It was like medication for the previous books negative implications. In fact it was restorative, invigorating and solemnly calming for my inner soul.FIVE People You Meet in Heaven touches you at a level that causes one to think "Hmm, so that could have been me on this or that day." Or "wow who would the 5 individuals be in my life?".And about Mid Book you begin pondering, contemplating, questioning yourself and remembering people, events, dates, important occasions, career choices/changes, survival situations and narrow escapes and the like - wondering - whom your list would include. Was it this guy or that guy or this family member or that - or was it that coworker and on and on to infinity about the countless people you have brushed up against in your life.It is delightfully fun to try to go back and come up with a worthy list of names that would make you the person you are today, or find that special event which put you in the situations you were in or are in now, or the position or career you are holding now and on and on. And as this only happens when you die - you being wondering also "How That Might Now Happen To You! And for what reason or purpose?". As I said it is delightfully fun to ponder all these and just 'go with it'. And the negateers and naysayers or those condemning souls who simply trashed this and every book like it have to be those anti-religious bigots or upset by 'everything morally based' or the 'hate the concept of heaven' list or the 'only government is my God' list or some other such nonsense. They have a sort of ingrained Neanderthal-like anti-intellectual problem of negtiavism in the wrong enviornment syndrome sort of thing. This is not a political book or a social engeneering book, it is fiction, fun and challenging your imagination stuff. It is sad that they simply cannot enjoy a fun thought provoking book when they see one. Sad, just sad. This book is pure and simply fun, thought provoking and challenging throughout - I was halfway through the book when asked - what it was about. In attempting to explain it up to that point and only having read about the first three entities and encounters - I found it was easier thought about - than explained and trying to tie it all together without reading it all - made it difficult. I explained my deductions one way. But by the time I finished reading this exceptional book/story and read the last page.I realized I had been snookered by the brilliance of the authors tapestry weaving. And I was caught completely off guard and found the truth at the end was something completely different than what I imagined at the middle of my reading. Which caused me to instantly review mentally the entire story over again - to find where my error was made - at guessing the outcome incorrectly. I found it - and I wonder if others will as well. I loved it.I applaud the author for giving me a great read, an easy read and a spellbinding read and a mental puzzle to ponder that made me keep the book close by - to pick it up whenever I could. Surprisingly I began on a Saturday about noon on a road trip and finished it at my Granddaughters Birthday Party the very next day - so I could pass it on to a friend of the family - who had expressed an interest in it when he saw it on the table next to me.If you look to condemn - I am sure someone can - but I found it intriguing, fascinating and meaningful at a number of levels. Of course the most significant contemplation I had while enjoying this literary ride - was in real life if this were true - there could actually be a dozen or two dozen or scores of people or even more - in every person's life - who significantly affected in some way each of our lives similarly to the characters in this meaningful work.Something think about - no doubt. My congrats to Mr. Albom.JPL

Leigh Culver is new doctor in a small town in Colorado. Close by is Sullivan's Crossing where Sully has his store and campgrounds. When Leigh's Aunt Helen comes to town for a visit and to write her new book, she becomes good friend's with Sully and decides to write on his front porch to enjoy the weather.Leigh starts seeing the pub owner Rob after his son cut his hand and Leigh stitched it up. Rob had met Leigh but never had much time with her. Things start too fast after their date and they find themselves in a dilemma. This story is another great one about feeling, read and coming together a small those in need. I think Robyn's books keep getting better and better. Don't miss this one.

I thought she could never top the Virgin River and Thunder Point series, but Carr's Sullivan's Crossing is just as great. Was so happy to see Maggie's Dad, Sully (from the first book) have a love interest with Helen, such an interesting character. Enjoyed their romance every bit as much as the much younger Rob and Leigh. Carr likes to pair couples that seem unlikely at first but ultimately fit together perfectly even with all the twists and turns life throws at you. Read at your own peril, because it will only make you hungry for more in the series!

Too predictibleThe Best of Us: Sullivan’s Crossing book 4 is by Robyn Carr. This is the fourth book about Sullivan’s Crossing. The Jones and Sullivans have made many friends in the community and through their strength and loyalty. Can these families continue to thrive in this town?Dr. Leigh Culver had come to Timberlake to run the Urgent Care. She had given up her fast-paced life in Chicago for the slow life here. After all her years of schooling, she still had not forgotten her first love, Johnny and the cruel way he left her almost at the altar. Could she find someone new here in this remote town? Could she persuade her Aunt Helen to come visit more often from Chicago? When she stitches the hand of Finn Shandon, the son of Rob Shandon who owned the pub just down the street from her office, she finds herself becoming aware of his Father, Rob. Neither she nor Rob are looking for anything serious and begin to see each other. Can they keep it light?Leigh’s Aunt Helen decides to sell her house in Chicago and move elsewhere. She isn’t sure where yet, but she knows it will be somewhere warm. She comes to visit Leigh and finds herself attracted to Sullivan’s Crossing campgrounds. This campground makes a perfect place for her to find the right solitude to write her books. It doesn’t hurt that Sully is there too. There is no way to predict what will happen between men and women. Reading “The Best of Us”, does help us on out way to figure them out.

This book is the best one yet in the series and I loved the other three!!! I could barely put it down. The two romances and the young girl with thehead problem were moving me along to read faster. I plan to start st the beginning of the series and reread them all again next!

Dr. Leigh Culver loves practicing medicine in Timberlake, Colorado. It is a much-needed change of pace from her stressful life in Chicago. The only drawback is she misses her aunt Helen, the woman who raised her. But it’s time that Leigh has her independence, and she hopes the beauty of the Colorado wilderness will entice her aunt to visit often. Helen Culver is an independent woman who lovingly raised her sister’s orphaned child. Now, with Leigh grown, it’s time for her to live life for herself. The retired teacher has become a successful mystery writer who loves to travel and intends to never experience winter again. When Helen visits Leigh, she is surprised to find her niece still needs her, especially when it comes to sorting out her love life. But the biggest surprise comes when Leigh takes Helen out to Sullivan’s Crossing and Helen finds herself falling for the place and one special person. Helen and Leigh will each have to decide if they can open themselves up to love neither expected to find and seize the opportunity to live their best lives. My Thoughts: From the very beginning of The Best of Us, I was caught up in the town of Sullivan’s Crossing and the village of Timberlake, enjoying the recurring characters from previous novels, and meeting new ones.Leigh was one of the new ones to me, and when she met Rob Shandon, the handsome guy who owned the local pub, she thought going out with him would be pleasant. What she didn’t expect was to fall for him. Just when she thinks everything has settled in nicely, though, something happens that changes their lives and forces them to make plans. Plans that will have to take into account Rob’s teenage sons, Leigh’s aunt, and the unexpected logistics of their combined lives. What will they realize about how the plans they already had were not necessarily the best ones for them, and that they can find joy in unexpected places? A delightful read that reunited me with old friends in a lovely setting. There were predictable moments, but I enjoyed them all. 4.5 stars.

Not my favorite of Robyn Carr's books, no matter which series is involved. This one drags on and is a bit insipid, with nothing really very interesting happening (I'm halfway through the book) and too many different relationships going on. And too many different characters. Nothing at all exciting in a positive way, either. The sad part is when a young lady has a brain tumor and something so extremely significant is played down to merely being a small part of the story. Come on! How do you write about something so awful for a few minutes, then simply jump back to various relationships as though they're anywhere near as important? You DON'T.This novel is nowhere near being one of Robyn Carr's best books.
