Review

"A beautifully tactile and relective meditation on the outsider's experience of a community, it is sharp and lyrical, occasionally a little whimsical, but always pushing towards the truth." * The Times * "The most authentic, enjoyable and evocative book on French village life that I have read in years. It deserves to be a hit!" -- Joanne Harris "A warm and wistful account of adapting to a new country and the heartache it brings." * Elle * "Wonderfully evocative, with a plangent note of longing, this is one for those dreary February commutes to work." * Marie Claire * "As beguiling and as enigmatically seductive a piece of writing as you could ask for . . . A beautifully tactile and reflective meditation on the outsider's experience of a community." * The Times *

Starts out nicely....but kind of fizzles. I was Initially taken by the authors beautifully crafted sentences and descriptions of her physical surroundings. I truly had an image in my mind of where she was what she was seeing and what she was feeling as she traveled to this destination in what appeared to be a lovely part of southern France. But the story quickly evolved into meeting a truly unlikable man named Luc who was professed to be a combination cowboy/painter/sarcastic kind of gloomy guy who was hard to like. I started to imagine what in the world she was doing with him when suddenly the story forks off into the sordid romantic escapades of various other people in the nearby village. The story took a turn and I was unsure about when I was reading ....her lovely prose that began at the beginning of book seem to dissolve into the creepy love life of people who were as boring and unlikable as Luc. I got halfway through and quit. I rarely do not finish a book but this book was better off left as a coaster for my coffee cup than something I really wanted to read.

Do not buy this book. It's truly dreadful. It seems like the author took a creative writing class (and failed), bought a thesaurus, and threw several thousand phrases together with as many adjectives and adverbs as possible. The prose does not flow at all: it's the same kind of feeling you get when you're being driven in a stick shift car with someone who's never driven one before.I couldn't get past page 21. I also bought a copy for a friend of mine (we're both Fracophiles and loved Peter Mayle--except his last book, which was terrible). She's more persistent than I am, and even she gave up.Save your money and look elsewhere.Mark

This gorgeously-written account of the author's experiences as an ex-pat living in a small French town is hypnotic and stunning in its evocation of place and feeling. The author has an impressionistic style that won't be everyone's cup of tea, but this is powerful writing that delves deep below the surface into the heart and soul of a place and the people who inhabit it. I found it in the travel section, but it breaks all the boundaries of typical travel writing. Not a travelogue, not quite a memoir, the book defies labels. Parts of it are pure poetry. I can't wait to read Stevenson's next work.
