I was excited to see a new entry into the LabVIEW library, and I rushed out to get this book.I found the pictures for the block diagrams to be too small to read. To me this was quite annoying because I want to read the book away from the PC screen and be able to enjoy the book.The content was varied, but not what I was looking for in a developers guide. For me personally, I would catagorize this book as a collection of projects with information about the LabVIEW make up of the projects. There were about 10 sections, with all but two of them being a review of a different LabVIEW application. For me there was too much domain knowledge on most of the projects. The domain knowledge was well written, but honestly I don't want to read the details of the domain in a LabVIEW book unless I have a personal interest in that domain. I was somewhat interested in the application of LabVIEW in active X and interacting with windows, but this was only in two chapters. I think most of the material in the first two chapters is available online at the two main community forums, maybe not the exact specifics, but close enough, compared to what is presented in the book. Again, my personal bias, I suggest looking at the contents of the chapters to see what they are before reading too much into my review.The book itself did not have a cohesive theme, approach, or methodology. The chapters did not support each other, build lessons or techniques, or reference LabVIEW independently of the specific project being described. This was most likely not the intent of the book, so it may be my bias towards what I was looking for, but I was focused on what is billed in the title as "a developer's guide to real world integration". This book was not that.When I am looking for a developers guide, I am interested in a "smack me in the face with techniques, styles, tricks, & approaches' book, with plenty of "why am I not doing that now" material. Plus I would like to have some tool kit or utility VI's that I could use out of the box. This book was clearly not intended for that.There are points and interesting code that solves real world problems and needs, in this book. However, I felt like I was having to read between the lines to get developer tips or technique, and they were too few for my tastes. For me this was not a development guide, but more of a set of project reviews with lots of domain introduction.There are plenty of projects in the community that are detailed online, again at 'the forums' and other 'zones', and they are available to everyone. I would suggest looking for projects that fulfill your immediate needs or interests if you are just interested in code and project review.Overall I found the material to be interesting for what it was, good for some specific and interesting real world applications. The format of the chapters was clear, I always knew where I was and where we were going in the material.
