Review

"Finally: a book that engagingly and entertainingly tells you what blockchain is and how it works. It makes clear why it's so important for our future, showing how this technology can help with everything from voting rights to economic inequality to corporate transparency to climate change. Stephen P. Williams' Blockchain: The Next Everything is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand where the world is headed."--Hunter Lovins, author of Natural Capitalism and President and Founder of Natural Capitalism Solutions"Stephen P. Williams has created a small miracle - a book about blockchain that helps the rest of us understand what it is, how it works and what the implications are for the future of our world. From the first page to the last, just when you think you know what this book is, it surprises you. By turns poetic, philosophical, explanatory and provocative, Blockchain: The Next Everything is a must-read for anyone who has ever wondered what all the hype is about, and why they should care."--Ty Montague, author of True Story and Founder of Co: Collective"Shakespeare famously advised readers to be on watch for tides in human history. Now we have blockchain. If you are curious about it, read this book. Stephen P. Williams has created a remarkable and remarkably accessible piece of work on one of the most important topics of our time."--Rye Barcott, author of It Happened on the Way to War and co-founder of Double Time Capital"An astonishing, illuminating tour of a mind-bending new economic model--written with the verve and page-turning appeal of a novel. A book for the nerd but especially for the rest of us scratching our tech-terrified heads. And--how did he do this?--it's inspiring and fun."--Patricia Hampl, author of The Art of the Wasted Day

Unlike any other book about blockchain, it’s filled with funny, interesting stories but still let you understand what it is. Clearly explain. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to understand this technology that we all should learn sooner than later!

I keep hearing about “blockchain,” but whenever I try to learn about it, I can’t figure it out. Until now. This book really made me “feel” what blockchain is all about. Now I know that I can talk about it like an intelligent person, and it also gives me some tools for imagining how it might work in my own business. I highly recommend it.

Wow! This book beautifully clarified a subject matter that I had long ago dismissed as impossible for me to understand! And- it made it clear why it's so important to understand it. Bravo!

Wonderful book for any business minds trying to unpack the potential (and differentiation) of blockchain technologies for innovation and future offerings, Highly recommended.

When cyrptocurrency prices shot up in 2017, a flood of books on blockchain and related topics hit the shelves. Some were good, most were rushed and flawed, some were near worthless. This book is in the last category and 18 months too late. One problem is the author does not understand, or at least never tries to explain, the technology. Of course there is room for books that explain implications of technology without discussing the underlying theory, but this book fails in that as well. The one aspect the author is clear about is that the blockchain is a ledger. There is lots of material on the history of ledgers, and discussions of how ledgers are useful. For example, one of his major blockchain use cases is land registry in Honduras. There's no doubt that a land ownership ledger is useful. That's precisely the 1858 idea of Robert Torrens, whose system spread rapidly throughout the world. But Torrens Title is not a blockchain in any sense. It's a centralized, unencrypted ledger maintained by the government. All the problems in Honduras could be solved by Torrens. Now there are reasons why a blockchain could be useful for Honduran land registry, but they are not discussed in the book. They cannot be, because the author has laid none of the groundwork. We might imagine that Hondurans distrustful of the government began their own public, decentralized, encrypted ledger--a blockchain--to record land ownership. They would need no permission, no one could stop them. If enough people used it voluntarily, buyers might start insisting on blockchain title, or at least examining the blockchain for possible title disputes. If so, sellers would have an incentive to obtain and defend blockchain title. If enough people did this for long enough, the blockchain could become the authoritative legal proof of land ownership. The benefits of the blockchain, as opposed to the simple ledger, is it requires no trusted central authority and no coercion. Once in place, it has strong protections against corruption. These are the things a blockchain book should discuss, not the benefits of a ledger. The author soon runs out of examples of useful ledgers, but instead of delving deeper into blockchain he starts discussing all kinds of things that are at best tangential. The cryptocurrency bitcoin uses a blockchain, so all digital currencies are topics for discussion, whether or not they use blockchains. Digital currencies are used to finance some distributed autonomous organizations, so those get chapters. Distributed autonomous organizations are pursuing some cool ideas--possibly visionary, possibly deluded--and those make fun topics. The result of this topic drift is the book resembles a random assortment of feature articles on ideas on blockchain, digital currency, cryptography, game theory and related field that could have been written anytime in the last decade. There's little unifying theme, and the articles themselves are pretty superficial.I recommend you either find a good book on blockchain that explains the technology and its possible applications, or a good book on implications of trustless pseudonymous value exchange for economics and society.

I've been doing a deep dive into blockchain for a couple of years now, and this book was a refreshing take on an enormous concept. Blockchain is becoming an integral part of business, but not yet consumer life. The author does a great job of showcasing applications for both accessibly and imaginatively, while weaving blockchain 101 throughout.First off, it's very well-written. I can't stand books where I pick apart the writing and can't get into the zone, and the author is very good. I even have a hard time reading on an airplane, and this book was a welcome addition to one of my flights.Second, I would say that this quick read would be great for nontechnical folks or beginners to blockchain who need to know what the big deal is in a short amount of time. It's also useful for folks like myself who are are tech savvy through a business or sustainability lens, but not necessarily coders.I also liked how much time he spent talking about blockchain through a sustainability lens, which I hadn't encountered in a book yet. The potential for blockchain to disrupt business, ownerships, and even how we govern ourselves was so uplifting. I wasn't expecting it, but this would also be good to read if you need a pick me up with all the sh*t that's going on in the world and/or are generally interested in sustainability.

Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World by Adam Grant“Originals" is an entertaining social-science book on how we can become more original. Referencing research and many studies, best-selling author Adam Grant explores what it takes to be creative and champion new ideas. This enlightening 335-page book includes the following eight chapters: 1. Creative Destruction, 2. Blind Inventors and One-Eyed Investors, 3. Out on a Limb, 4. Fools Rush In, 5. Goldilocks and the Trojan Horse, 6. Rebel with a Cause, 7. Rethinking Groupthink, and 8. Rocking the Boat and Keeping It Steady.Positives:1. A well-researched, well-written book. It’s entertaining and fun to read.2. Interesting topic, the social science of originality.3. Very good format. Each chapter beings with a chapter-appropriate quote and it’s broken out by subtopics. Grant also does a good job of introducing the main goal for each chapter.4. Does a good job of defining originality and staying on topic. “By my definition, originality involves introducing and advancing an idea that’s relatively unusual within a particular domain, and that has the potential to improve it.”5. In many respects this narrative resembles books from the likes of Malcolm Gladwell and Daniel H. Pink and that’s not a bad thing.6. The faults in defaults. “To get Firefox or Chrome, you have to demonstrate some resourcefulness and download a different browser. Instead of accepting the default, you take a bit of initiative to seek out an option that might be better. And that act of initiative, however tiny, is a window into what you do at work.” “The hallmark of originality is rejecting the default and exploring whether a better option exists.”7. The odds are you will learn something that can be applied to your everyday life. “Regardless of political ideologies, when a candidate seemed destined to win, people liked him more. When his odds dropped, they liked him less.”8. Interesting tidbits of knowledge throughout the book. “The word entrepreneur, as it was coined by economist Richard Cantillon, literally means ‘bearer of risk.’”9. Debunks some myths or preconceptions that I carried. “Entrepreneurs who kept their day jobs had 33 percent lower odds of failure than those who quit.” “Having a sense of security in one realm gives us the freedom to be original in another.”10. The barriers of originality. “The biggest barrier to originality is not idea generation—it’s idea selection.”11. The book is loaded with examples and interesting characters. The story of the great inventor Dean Kamen is a highlight. “When it comes to idea generation, quantity is the most predictable path to quality.”12. The limitations of originality. “Our intuitions are only accurate in domains where we have a lot of experience.”13. An interesting and practical chapter on when to speak up and how to do it effectively. “Power involves exercising control or authority over others; status is being respected and admired.”14. An interesting look at procrastination. Pioneers vs settlers. “Power involves exercising control or authority over others; status is being respected and admired.”15. How to overcome barriers that prevent coalitions from succeeding. “To form alliances with opposing groups, it’s best to temper the cause, cooling it as much as possible. Yet to draw allies into joining the cause itself, what’s needed is a moderately tempered message that is neither too hot nor too cold, but just right.”16. Interesting look at the impact of birth order as it relates to originality. “Laterborns were twice as likely as firstborns to support radical changes.” “The evidence on birth order highlights the importance of giving children freedom to be original.”17. Observations to live by. “In general, we tend to be overconfident about our own invulnerability to harm.”18. Some lessons on groupthink. “The evidence suggests that social bonds don’t drive groupthink; the culprits are overconfidence and reputational concerns.” “Bridgewater has prevented groupthink by inviting dissenting opinions from every employee in the company.”19. The positive power of negative thinking. “Most people assume it’s better to be a strategic optimist than a defensive pessimist. Yet Norem finds that although defensive pessimists are more anxious and less confident in analytical, verbal, and creative tasks, they perform just as well as strategic optimists.”20. A practical overview. “Actions for Impact”Negatives:1. Social science is not a hard science. Though fun, entertaining and even enlightening we engineers are skeptical of it.2. Limited use of charts and diagrams to complement the excellent narrative.3. Lack of supplementary materials. I would have added an appendix explaining methodology used to come up with conclusions.4. References included but no direct links to access them in the body of the narrative thus eliminating one of the great advantages of eBooks. In summary, this was a fun book to read. The first section of the book on managing risks involved in generating, recognizing, and voicing original ideas I felt was its strongest. The second section dealt with the choices that we make to scale originality. The third section dealt with unleashing and sustaining originality, and Grant closes the book on emotions. The biggest criticism of this book is the fact that social science is not a hard science so some of the conclusions come across as coincidental or speculative. Grant is a master of noticing patterns but I still have a little reluctance to take all at face value. Interesting nonetheless, I recommend it!Further recommendations: ”Drive: The Surprising Truth about What Motivates Us” by Daniel H. Pink, “Collaborate or Perish!: Reaching Across Boundaries in a Networked World” by William Bratton and Zachary Tumin, “Outliers” and “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell, “Just Start” by Leonard A. Schlesinger, “Switch” by Chip and Dan Heath, “Get Lucky: How to Put Planned Serendipity to Work for You and Your Business” by Thor Muller and Lane Becker “inGenius” by Tina Seelig, “Work with Me” by Barbara Annis and John Gray, “Power: Why Some People Have It and Others Don’t” by Jeffrey Pfeffer, “The Power of Habit” by Charles Duhigg, “Rebounders: How Winners Pivot from Setback to Success” by Rick Newman, and “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us” by Daniel H. Pink.

This book was recommended by a company executive in my workplace. She referenced a study used in the book during a meeting and I bought the book on my phone seconds after the meeting ended. Upon starting, I couldn't help but dive in. It is captivating, but only if proper time is taken with it. I read sections 2X/week and finished the book in a month and a half (1.5 months). The pages of my copy are filled with notes, underlining, brackets, and circling -- it is FILLED with personal and professional takeaways. As a lifelong learner, soon-to-be law school (JD) and business school (MBA) student, and one who desires to start a healthy, efficient, and well-cultured business, this book was for me.I hope this feedback can help decide if this book is for you too!

My personal bias—I love the work that Adam Grant does. So, read no further if that bothers you about my objectivity as a reviewer. Grant, a young, uber-smart and engaging professor at Wharton, might just be the latter-day Peter Drucker, only much cooler! In Originals, Grant teaches us how to develop new ideas and how to vet them; how to pitch those ideas to others; when to trust our gut and when not to; the difference between power and status and so much more! He also busts some interesting myths like how successful entrepreneurs are not hyper-risk takers—rather, they hedge their bets; how the creative problem solvers are often not experts in their fields; and, how procrastination can be your friend—every writer in the world should now rejoice! Grant uses academic studies, stats and stories from unexpected places to punctuate a well-orchestrated text. For example, he tells about how the show “Seinfeld” barely made it to TV and how it took a very special NBC executive with broad, varied experience to have the courage to put his reputation on the line. And as a huge Seinfeld fan, I personally salute him! Finally, I would encourage you to read Sheryl Sandberg’s foreword, because not only does she do a very good overview of the book while praising the author for his talent, but she also praises Grant for his empathetic heart. When Sandberg’s husband suddenly died, Grant dropped what he was doing and flew across the country to be with her in her darkest hours. Grant, like his book, is an Original!

This book is full of interesting and useful ideas on creativity, innovation, and management. The author draws from the findings of a great deal of academic research, which is very useful. He is, nevertheless, brief in explaining how the experiments have been carried out by his fellow academics. In presenting the findings as given, he allows little room for readers to judge for themselves the limitations, or validity, of the quoted findings. I also find the writing to lose focus at times. The book is written in plain English, which is easy and enjoyable to read. It is recommended for readers in general.

Reading a handful of books as I prepare to teach online (38 years of teaching old school). This book, like the others I've read, is primarily about teaching upper division and grad students. I'm looking at teaching basic stat to freshmen. There's good help with course structure here. There's good links to research on what works. But, most of the actual "do this" examples don't feel like they fit what I'm preparing to do.

This is an excellent book for the prof or teacher wanting to expand into the online teaching community. Details out how to create online teaching communities in contrast to mere delivery of content. The tech is a bit dated, but concepts are very helpful. Some chapters a bit repetitive in terms of tech, but again, concepts define start, early mid, late mid and class closure concepts for improving learners experience. I found this book very helpful in improving my insight in online teaching processes. Fabulous for new online teachers, and good overview/update for those already in the field. Will be keeping this book on shelf for a while.

I completed a master degree in Instructional Design, this is by far the best, most comprehensive book I have used! Very concise history and pedagogy (just enough info--but not an overload). Such applicable suggestions and laid out in a very logical sequence. We will be using this for professional development on our community college campus!

Since it is digital I ask my Alexa to read it for me. Contentwise, I am up to chapter 3, but I already like the idea of survival guides for online teaching. No big buzzwords around, just some easy to follow tips and tricks. Got a lot inspiration from it. Me and my partner are doing a book club thing, discuss the book every two weeks.

Great book full of terrific tips for on-line teaching. I have learned a lot from this book and it is going to be used for faculty development in my department.

Simple and easy to follow. The book takes you through the stages of online courses. Great reference book for someone self studying or in a class.

I'm writing a course to help faculty transition from the face-to-face environment to the online environment. This is one of the two textbooks that I chose. Rather than being organized by topic, this book is organized by flow through the course, from beginning to early middle to late middle to closing. This allows the authors to share best practices that are unique to where one is in a course. This is especially important for those who follow the Constructivist tradition in which faculty support is gradually withdrawn as learners take on increased responsibility for constructing their own knowledge and meaning.

This is s great read for all levels of educators. Highly supported by current research, with practical application suggestions also.

I have been following Robins blog for years. I have purchased tools from as well. A National Treasure in knowledge of technique as well as in his ability to communicate his knowledge and understanding of what goes into this craft. The research is impeccable, well organized and presented. What makes this so valuable is that discussion of form, and construction is founded on sound understanding of the techniques needed to create the object. Because Robin is a Master Turner, he brings practical understanding of all techniques necessary to create the bowl. This is knowledge that cannot be gained without being a craftsman making these objects. The craftsmanship of risk and choices made by the people creating the objects is also well documented.I can unhesitatingly recommend this to anyone needing more knowledge to further their own work or anyone wanting a history of bowl crafting. It is also a spectacular book on its own merits.

This is an interesting retrospective about kitchenware, specifically wooden bowls, authored by Robin Wood, the well known pole turner who resides in the UK. Mr. Wood has done a good job with the very small number of fragments and whole artifacts that date from Early Modern Europe. The book covers methods of turning a wooden bowl on a human powered lathe in several regions of the world, it is well illustrated with very clear photos, and he discusses bowl and craft turning in the British Isles in both the past and in modern times. He also included a section in the back of the book that shows how he turns bowls and plates out of trees that he sources locally. An excellent book for those interested in the history of lathes and wood craft, advanced woodworkers, and also of interest to archeologists, historians and reinactors.

Book is excellent - explains complete history of wooden bowls and objects describes turning and laths and gives great pictures so you can see what they looked like at different periods of production. I particularly enjoyed seeing the objects found on the Mary Rose that sank in the 16th century.

Great book

Very good, thanks.

A fascinating treatment of the topic of wooden bowls and their place in history and daily life. Worth it for the photography alone, but the book delivers on all counts and is a worthy addition to any woodworker or historians library!

I was looking for a history of American bowl making and examples of such to assist me in my collecting. This book's focus is European bowls--and only portions of it. Its nice for those reasons but fails completely when it comes to bowls made and used here in North America.

Very well researched. It even inspired my brother in law and I to built two pole lathes and make dozens of bowls. Nice Book, Nice Pictures.
