The Five People You Meet in Heaven by Mitch Albom is by far my favorite book in the world. I'm an avid reader, but this was the most significant book at a point in my life (high school) where I was lost, confused, searching for my place in the world, and reeling for the loss of my grandmother, who was one of the most important people in my life. I was searching for a faith in something, and I picked up this book. It changed everything.The premise of the book is that when you die, you meet five people. They are not always the five most important people in your life (parents, grandparents, spouses, children, etc), but sometimes people who you met in passing or who you'd rather forget. Sometimes it's someone you don't really even know. But they're always someone who has had an important impact on your life.In The Five People You Meet in Heave, the story follows Eddie as he meets his five people and his life's meaning is revealed to him. He meets five people, only one of who he really would have thought would be on his 'five people' list. The story is heartbreaking and moving and life affirming. I am still a sobbing mess every time I re-read it. I can't tell you how many highlights and pencil marks my hard copy of this has, and probably just as many for my kindle version. Yes, I have both a hard copy and a kindle version. I treasure my original copy, but love having the digital version at my fingertips everywhere I go. This book is THAT good. It's the kind of book you pass along to a friend who is struggling or a teenager in need of guidance and searching for the meaning of life. If you only read one book, make it this one!

I read this book, because it was assigned to my children for the summer. I expected a good story, but I didn't expect such real characters or the beautiful imagery that makes you feel like you're there. There are words of wisdom throughout the book, but the main message is absolutely beautiful. I would like to be more specific. However, I feel like that would spoil the book for future readers. I gave this book five stars, because I feel like I received a hug from heaven. It really blew me away. Read it and listen to it on Audible.

Oh my gosh! I loved reading this book! It makes you think about so many things in your life. I wouldn’t say it’s particularly religious in any sense, just a very interested way to think of heaven and why things happened to you while you were alive. I will recommend this book for the reat of my life and I can’t wait to read it again. It is a very quick read. I couldn’t put it down!! You will love it!

This book was recommended to me and it took me 3 years to buy it, always in the back of my mind of something to do but never done. Then when I finally got it, I consumed it in one morning. I’m not usually a big reader honestly this is the 3rd or so book I’ve read cover to cover since I was in school but I simply could not put this book down! It is such a powerful book it moved me to tears many times reading it. I can’t recomend it enough!

This book is not new and has been reviewed hundreds of times so I'll keep my thoughts short and sweet on it.When Eddie died in a tragic accident he met five different people that intersected his life in one way or another. They were meant to give him clarity and answer the question "Why was I here?" Some of the people were expected but others were not.The Five People You Meet in Heaven was a short and easy book to read. I flew through the pages and was anxious to know who Eddie would meet and what they would bring to the table. Many things about his life were explained and he was given clarity on a number of things as well.I enjoyed every minute of this book. It doesn't get preachy or speak of religion but tells one story of what could possibly happen after the end. I appreciate that about it and therefore think that it would appeal to a large number of people.

Just coming off a recent read of "A Forgotten Man" by J. Pepper Bryars - which touched me deeply - and left me grieving for the 'middle class' in America - at the hands of an out-of-control Government Leviathan - in a very sad sort of way.I found this wonderful story, this simple, touching and inventive view by Mitch Albom - an author - with a vivid imagination - of a fictional heaven - where ones life, their purpose and their interconnection with the world and their fellow human beings is explained to them - through a series of story telling by those (selected by someone else - unexplained - God Maybe) who (known or unknown) were affected by one's life or that affected the main character's life throughout his or her life experiences quite refreshing. Where decisions, actions and/or inaction in various ways along their path made a big difference in that persons adventure, successes and failures. It was like medication for the previous books negative implications. In fact it was restorative, invigorating and solemnly calming for my inner soul.FIVE People You Meet in Heaven touches you at a level that causes one to think "Hmm, so that could have been me on this or that day." Or "wow who would the 5 individuals be in my life?".And about Mid Book you begin pondering, contemplating, questioning yourself and remembering people, events, dates, important occasions, career choices/changes, survival situations and narrow escapes and the like - wondering - whom your list would include. Was it this guy or that guy or this family member or that - or was it that coworker and on and on to infinity about the countless people you have brushed up against in your life.It is delightfully fun to try to go back and come up with a worthy list of names that would make you the person you are today, or find that special event which put you in the situations you were in or are in now, or the position or career you are holding now and on and on. And as this only happens when you die - you being wondering also "How That Might Now Happen To You! And for what reason or purpose?". As I said it is delightfully fun to ponder all these and just 'go with it'. And the negateers and naysayers or those condemning souls who simply trashed this and every book like it have to be those anti-religious bigots or upset by 'everything morally based' or the 'hate the concept of heaven' list or the 'only government is my God' list or some other such nonsense. They have a sort of ingrained Neanderthal-like anti-intellectual problem of negtiavism in the wrong enviornment syndrome sort of thing. This is not a political book or a social engeneering book, it is fiction, fun and challenging your imagination stuff. It is sad that they simply cannot enjoy a fun thought provoking book when they see one. Sad, just sad.This book is pure and simply fun, thought provoking and challenging throughout - I was halfway through the book when asked - what it was about. In attempting to explain it up to that point and only having read about the first three entities and encounters - I found it was easier thought about - than explained and trying to tie it all together without reading it all - made it difficult. I explained my deductions one way. But by the time I finished reading this exceptional book/story and read the last page.I realized I had been snookered by the brilliance of the authors tapestry weaving. And I was caught completely off guard and found the truth at the end was something completely different than what I imagined at the middle of my reading. Which caused me to instantly review mentally the entire story over again - to find where my error was made - at guessing the outcome incorrectly. I found it - and I wonder if others will as well. I loved it.I applaud the author for giving me a great read, an easy read and a spellbinding read and a mental puzzle to ponder that made me keep the book close by - to pick it up whenever I could. Surprisingly I began on a Saturday about noon on a road trip and finished it at my Granddaughters Birthday Party the very next day - so I could pass it on to a friend of the family - who had expressed an interest in it when he saw it on the table next to me.If you look to condemn - I am sure someone can - but I found it intriguing, fascinating and meaningful at a number of levels. Of course the most significant contemplation I had while enjoying this literary ride - was in real life if this were true - there could actually be a dozen or two dozen or scores of people or even more - in every person's life - who significantly affected in some way each of our lives similarly to the characters in this meaningful work.Something think about - no doubt. Was so happy to see Maggie's Dad, Sully (from the first book) have a love interest with Helen, such an interesting character. Enjoyed their romance every bit as much as the much younger Rob and Leigh. Carr likes to pair couples that seem unlikely at first but ultimately fit together perfectly even with all the twists and turns life throws at you. Read at your own peril, because it will only make you hungry for more in the series!

This book is the best one yet in the series and I loved the other three!!! I could barely put it down. The two romances and the young girl with thehead problem were moving me along to read faster. I plan to start st the beginning of the series and reread them all again next!

Helen and Leigh will each have to decide if they can open themselves up to love neither expected to find and seize the opportunity to live their best lives.My Thoughts: From the very beginning of The Best of Us, I was caught up in the town of Sullivan’s Crossing and the village of Timberlake, enjoying the recurring characters from previous novels, and meeting new ones.Leigh was one of the new ones to me, and when she met Rob Shandon, the handsome guy who owned the local pub, she thought going out with him would be pleasant. What she didn’t expect was to fall for him. Just when she thinks everything has settled in nicely, though, something happens that changes their lives and forces them to make plans. Plans that will have to take into account Rob’s teenage sons, Leigh’s aunt, and the unexpected logistics of their combined lives.What will they realize about how the plans they already had were not necessarily the best ones for them, and that they can find joy in unexpected places? A delightful read that reunited me with old friends in a lovely setting. There were predictable moments, but I enjoyed them all. 4.5 stars.

Not my favorite of Robyn Carr's books, no matter which series is involved. This one drags on and is a bit insipid, with nothing really very interesting happening (I'm halfway through the book) and too many different relationships going on. And too many different characters. Nothing at all exciting in a positive way, either.The sad part is when a young lady has a brain tumor and something so extremely significant is played down to merely being a small part of the story. Come on! How do you write about something so awful for a few minutes, then simply jump back to various relationships as though they're anywhere near as important? You DON'T.This novel is nowhere near being one of Robyn Carr's best books.

I was excited to read this book to learn more about the specific strategies and tactics that Bradley Tusk/his firm used in helping Uber navigate its regulatory battles, especially with NYC in 2015 - and he did not disappoint. Even though I've studied the rideshare industry and been deeply involved in mobility for 5 years, I learned a lot from this book. In Silicon Valley, there's a tendency to want to keep the playbook private but Bradley doesn't come from SV and that's what makes his work and viewpoint so unique. And it's also what makes this book a must read!The Fixer is easy to read and I like that Bradley combines theory/strategy with real life examples and playbooks of how he's helped specific companies like Uber, Eaze, etc navigate regulation and public policy. I thought the Uber example was the most detailed and the others were more anecdotes than anything. Bradley's background in politics makes for a great skillset when applied to tech but I didn't find the part in the book about his political biography (1/3) as interesting as the more tech focused parts of the book (2/3).Ultimately, this is definitely a book I enjoyed reading and would recommend to anyone interested in tech, startups, Uber, venture capital or politics.

Definitely worth reading, as it tells a story that is worth understanding. However, a bit too heavy-handed where the innovators are (somewhat flawed) white knights and the government is a passel of egomaniacs and thieves (not including Mike Bloomberg). I can't give half-stars on Amazon (really? why is that?) so I'll grade on the curve and give it a 4/5.

Repetitive at times, and the early political memoir and later half-baked policy proposal sections are meh, but the crunchy middle on startups handling regulation is worth the price of admission.

His writing style is breezy and easily engaged. The book is largely anecdotal. Noting this might appear to be faint praise, but it's not. Anecdotes, war stories are what one anticipates and seeks value from in the early phase of change. The conversational style includes lots of extraneous observations from the author, but they're generally entertaining, not irrelevant or without value.Tusk presents examples in various sectors, from cannabis through taxi cabs. He plies his trade largely in highly-regulated states such as New York, Illinois and California. His descriptions of New York are the most in-depth and interesting. Tusk has worked extensively with Michael Bloomberg and has choice opinions of various politicians, from Chuck Schumer to Bill de Blasio. Reading of his role--even discounting some foreseeable and forgivable self-puffery and pulling punches to preserve ongoing relationships--one is reminded of nothing so much as "bosses" of the past. Tusk is a freelance boss of sorts, bringing money and politicians together to achieve mutually beneficial results.Looking ahead, one wonders if Tusk will become a defender of incumbents and his challengers of today become the incumbents of tomorrow. But these are questions for another day. For now, anyone seeking to seeking a glimpse of today's political scene can find value in this engaging, conversational, highly informed book on money, power and politics in what will likely come to be seen as a transitional period in American politics.

I thought this book read like a memoir, with the first part focused on Tusk's experience as a political operative (mostly in New York politics--entering accidentally after meeting the mayor of Philly who's from New York at the Democratic Convention, with the latter offering him an internship in his office--from there Tusks works in the Parks Dept., gets himself hired as the Director of Communications for Senator Chuck Schumer, goes for a brief detour as a deputy governor in Illinois, working for Rob Blagojevic before the start of all his legal problems, and then returns to New York to help Bloomberg with his campaign). The second part of this book follows Tusk's experience in starting his own consulting company to help others navigate the local politics, working with companies like Uber back when it was a small start-up. Throughout the memoir, Tusk shares some of his observations about politicians (people running for office tend to be full of insecurity, so the one who has power is the one who can control all the attention), scaring off rivals from running against you (as in the case of Anthony Weiner), and the media, among other things. I thought it was a light read. As someone unfamiliar with the behind-the-scenes world of politics, it was interesting reading about the kind of things that go on.

Saying that Pancho Barnes was a character would be like saying Al Pacino is an actor. Almost everyone is familiar with Amelia Earhart but most are not aware of the numerous other accomplished women pilots of that same era, including Pancho Barnes. Pancho had also set many records and broke some that had been set by her better-known compatriots. Pancho was not averse to getting dirty working on the planes she flew as well as other machinery and that combined with the way she typically dressed resulted in her often being mistaken for a man. She also worked as a stunt pilot for movies and organized a stunt pilots union to improve the pay and dangerous conditions that they dealt with.She had been born to wealth and had been greatly influenced by her grandfather who was an inventor, businessman, risk taker, etc, and Pancho inherited many of these traits. My first real exposure to Pancho's story was through a 1988 movie that starred Valerie Bertinelli as Pancho Barnes, which vastly improved on the real Pancho's looks. Pancho wasn't pretty, she swore as a normal part of her vocabulary, constantly told off-color stories, and developed a liking for younger men-including one of my uncles who was married to her, for a while. But she was always up for a good time and would freely share whatever she had. Her parties went on for days and were legendary, attended by fellow pilots and Hollywood friends.She had many great business ideas but as soon as thing started coming together she lost interest and was on to the next thing. This combined with a total lack of financial common sense resulted in her going through money like there was no end to it resulting in many business failures. Along the way, because of her connections with other pilots, including Jimmy Doolittle, Chuck Yeager, and others, she developed a pilot training center on her property during WWII and many of her acquaintances along the way continued to hang out at her facilities including the book's namesake Happy Bottom Riding Club. She experienced many successes but also many failures. This book was well written and researched and put some realism to the life of a very colorful individual that had been softened quite a bit for the 1988 movie.Anyone with an interest in the early days of aviation, women in aviation, WWII pilot training, development of new aircraft and the test pilots who proved them, and how not to run a business as well as many other topics will enjoy this book. To sum up Pancho Barnes' general philosophy in life I will just list one of her quotes here: Ah, hell. We had more fun in a week than those weenies had in a lifetime. - Pancho Barnes

An excellent book, which deserves to be read just as much for the writing style as its fascinating subject matter. Pancho Barnes features in passing in various books biographies about the Muroc/Edwards AFB era, so the broad parameters of her story are reasonably well known. Lauren Kessler's research, however, is very detailed and paints a full picture of a very interesting character. Even though the "riches-to-rags" story is fairly obvious, the manner in which it is presented is captivating. I could not put this book down.One very (very) minor flaw with the book: a map of the Antelope Valley area showing the location of the Happy Bottom Riding Club between the Edwards and Rosamond dry lakes would have assisted readers with conceptualising those parts of the book. That however is a very minor point and doesn't stop me giving it 5 stars.Well worth the read.

Florence "Pancho" Leontine Lowe Barnes may have been to the manor born and bred, but she chafed at her parent's prim and proper society and decided to be true to the one person she could count on -- herself.Until I read this book, I only knew of Pancho Barnes and her Happy Bottom Riding Club from the movie THE RIGHT STUFF. She was the proprietor of the saloon/motel/dude ranch where all the test pilots from nearby Edwards Air Force Base hung out. Her character didn't get much footage in the movie, but she was compelling enough to warrant further investigation.Author Lauren Kessler offers an insider's view into the life of this enigmatic woman, from her privileged childhood to her poverty-stricken death. This is no mere biography...it's a tour de force of the woman behind all the legends.Pancho Barnes was raised by wealthy parents. Her grandfather had made his fortune with patents and in real estate in the early part of the 20th century. Her grandfather died broke, but he lived large. Her grandfather and father doted on her and indulged her every wish. She was puzzled by her mother's world of socials, needlework and fancy dresses. She was dazzled by horses, the outdoors and demanding physical activity.Early on, it was clear that Florence was not going to be a beauty, nor was she the shy and retiring kind. She rode horses, played outside and generally behaved as a young boy. School bored her. Afternoon teas and theidea of running a house set her teeth on edge. Even though she obeyed her family's wishes and married an Episcopalian minister and had one child, she was never a conventional wife or mother, in any form, shape or fashion.As a diversion from her unhappy marriage, she found work as a horse wrangler in the fledgling movie industry. She worked as a stunt person in some of the films she provided horses for. She discovered flying and it became her life-long passion. She found love in the arms of many men, including her four subsequent husbands. She cussed like a sailor, drank whiskey with the best of them, and rubbed elbows with Hollywood elite. She could hold an audience captive with her storytelling acumen. She ran a dairy farm, a pig breeding business, a boisterous resort and maintained a stable full of fabulous horses. She spent three fortunes and died broke, but she lived life to the fullest and made the most of every moment.I read this book in one sitting and dare anyone who starts it to try and put it down.Pancho Barnes was one of a kind. What a dame! I wish I had known her.Enjoy!

Pancho was a very interesting personality, to say the least. I first read about her in Chuck Yeagers autobiography then later in Bob Hoovers Autobiography. Had to get more information on this accomplished though flamboyant person. She was definitely one of a kind and left her mark on the world of flying.

My streak of reading really good books lately continues with this one. I took a chance when this was on sale awhile back since the story sounded intriguing and the cover art drew me in. The story revolves around the Bird family who inhabits a comfortable home in the Cotswolds. The mother, Lorelei, is full of a youthful exuberance that seems to be more childish than childlike at times. The four children are raised in this "perfect" family, but the cracks in the foundation are felt even when not yet seen. Told in the present day when the family is coming together to bury Lorelei, there are flashbacks to events over the years along with emails Lorelei has been exchanging with a friend she met online which give a glimpse into her final weeks.There is a feeling of tension and suspense as the reader tries to piece together what has transpired to change this family from a close-knit one to a family geographically scattered and emotionally estranged.A great read that is hard to put down once started. Subject matter of hoarding is explored with sensitivity and a lack of sensationalism that I very much appreciated. Loved it from beginning to end.

This was one of the best books that I have read this year. Beautifully written, it introduces the reader to the Bird family who live in a picturesque village in the Cotswalds in a charming house. The slightly eccentric Lorelei lives there with her husband, Colin, with their four children. They appear to lead an almost idyllic existence, happy in each others company. They even have an ongoing family tradition: annual Easter egg hunts. They seem to be an almost enviable family, until one day something happens that will change each of their lives profoundly.How their lives change and what happens to them and why is revealed slowly and inexorably.The author expertly and delicately peels the layers back for the reader, advancing the heartbreaking family drama that unfolds. Central to it all is Lorelei, whose life goes so out of control that she is unable to help her husband or her children, much less herself. This book is a sensitive look at why people end up as they are. Sometimes, they end up as collateral damage, when their mother finds herself unable to cope with the unkindest cut of all.This is a a sensitively drawn portrait of a family in so much pain, it goes off the rails. It is about how its individual members find ways of coping with that pain, even if they do not fully understand how or why they got to that point in the first place. The author brilliantly brings it all to a head in the final denouement that makes the reasons for all that happened to this family come together in one moment of startling clarity. Bravo!

I did not want to put this book down. I would read until the wee hours of the morning. The story had my attention - but I was tired, so I forced myself to put it aside. I didn't want to finish it with only half my brain working. The sacrifice was worth it; finding out how the Bird family becomes so fractured was compelling.The story is told through a series of flashbacks and from different family members point of view, in third person. Despite this, the story was not confusing at all.Jewell did a masterful job of creating sympathy for each of the characters - flaws (and oh, they have them) and all.

Throughout the reading of this novel, I wavered between a one-star rating to a five-star rating. At the end, I gave into a three-star rating. Some parts of the story were remarkable especially the ability of the author to bring in six (then only five) different personalities each "talking" about each of their own lives as children and as adults. And what a mess of a family! Each member could be its own soap opera. So many issues thrown at the reader with little guidance as to how to sort through it all. At times I simply wanted to stop reading and archive the book. Yet somehow (due to the author's writing -- or my own sorry curiosity), I felt compelled to discover what came next with this family. Finally finished. I put down the book and shook my head that all seemed to be just fine. All was sorted and forgiven as long as family could come together and love each other. Maybe I needed more information as to how the members managed to resolve all their single and multiple issues. Or maybe the family decided not to resolve anything -- rather simply to accept life at the present and move on. So, compelling writing that pushed along a messy/complex plot. I left the book thinking I learned little and gained nothing in the reading.

The House We Grew Up In is a very thought provoking, brilliantly written book! I'm so glad I found this book and will have to read Lisa Jewell's other Novels. I love British authors their wit and style of writing is straight forward and funny. However this story is about a hoarder, collector of rubbish which is a serious issue of mental illness. The book immediately draws you into this completely dysfunctional family you will not be able to put it down. I come from a detached broken family. Yet, when when mom was around in our younger years we were all so close! It was easy to relate to the Bird family . The story is heart breaking at times. No matter how bizarre things get with this family it's written in a compassionate, tender way. You can't pick your family but love and life's lessons seems to get them through all the craziness. Very unique topic which is written in a tender loving way!

As part of their botany curriculum this year, my teen boys had to read "The Groundbreaking, Chance-Taking Life of George Washington Carver and Science and Invention in America." This is one of a series of books by written and illustrated by Cheryl Harness and published by the National Geographic Society. While I haven't read the others, I can tell you I was extremely impressed by this installment.The book, as one might expect, tells the story of George Washington Carver's life, but it goes beyond that, placing Carver in historical context with the world around him. At the bottom of the text throughout the entire book is an illustrated timeline of other events / inventions / people which were significant at that time. It made for fascinating reading all by itself, providing an interesting snapshot of the world in which Carver lived and worked.Harness is a talented writer and illustrator. The text is easy to read and understand while offering a great deal of information and will keep both young people and adults engaged. The illustrations are rendered in black and white and are a cross between a cartoon and a realistic style. They both break up and add to the text, helping to make the book appealing to a wide spectrum of readers.

Traveled to Austin this past month, and this book was a great addition to my Austin itinerary research. It is a pretty simple, not overly wordy list of interesting, quirky, unique things to try out or explore in Austin. It's divided into categories so that you can focus in on what you're interested in, and bookmark whatever appeals to you. Most guidebooks are super dense and hard to get through, but this book was a concise and offered a great variety of options - food, arts, sports, entertainment, etc. Left it at our Air BnB so that other travelers can utilize it after us!

I lived in Austin in the late 70s and early 80s and still visit When I can. According to Kristy Owen, I'm about half ready to die. Some of the "must do" activities are long-time traditions, and some, like eating goodies from food trucks, are new. I would add a few, including viewing the Guttenberg Bible at the Harry Ransom Museum. I would also list fewer dining experiences, as restaurants change in quality or close down all together. However, the book offers a good starting list of the many adventures Austin offers.

I got this book for my son who lives in Austin. He immediately started going through it checking off things he's already done. Now he's prioritizing what he has yet to do! Great book!

This book is great. Easy read. Highlights the best spots and is well organized.

Great book! Read it all in just a couple hours and is a wonderful coffee table book that my visitors love to read.

Great to have when you visit Austin. Didn't do most of it, but at least knew where to find the action!!!
