I enjoyed the history and the way it is presented in the book

I bought this book for my 7th grader to supplement her social studies curriculum. It is just right for middle school level reading. It describes the basics of 5 religions: Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity. Each one is presented factually and without bias. Colorful side notes and illustrations make things interesting. There are roughly 20 pages on each religion. Each chapter covers origins, major events, theology, and traditions at an overview level. Recommended! I learned quite a bit myself.

It is always cheerful to be reminded that one is not alone. One writing instructor once informed me: readers love to see themselves in what you have written. As for me, I feel as though I'm reading portions of my own life story as I read this book. I've been harping on about this stuff for 34 years!I knew that I wanted to be a writer by the age of nine, and when I turned eleven I told my mother that seeing as I had already learned the "three R's," I wished to leave school and pursue my education through self-direction, adventure and the guidance of a tutor / mentor. I wanted to learn along the lines of the bestselling author of (among many other hilarious writings) "My Family and Other Animals," Gerald Durrell. Mom sent me right back to school, where I proceeded to do the minimum necessary to achieve a first-class pass, (required for university entrance), just in case I ever decided to study at a university...For the most part, I detested the classroom. I still think of it as a monumental waste of time and an horrific imposition on a naturally adventurous mind. So many hours that could have been spent in real learning: exploring, inventing, trying and failing - essentially in discovering and excelling in what I truly felt could be my meaningful contribution to the world, were wasted in meeting the agenda of a national education board. I resented the kind of thinking that imposes a "one size fits all" style of education delivery format on a child.Having traveled a lot and tried out many pathways, I discovered that working toward Journeyman status in the electrical trade is opening up the opportunity to travel as I wish, and by keeping my hand in photo-journalism on a part-time basis, I am able to continue with my development as a writer. Much of my education is self-directed and experience based. I have never been more contented in my pathway!I am thrilled that, due to electronic technologies, especially the Internet, the educational system is being forced to change and provide greater freedom for the autodidact to obtain information. It is high time.Reading "Hacking Your Education" provides excellent encouragement, and resource / networking information as a starting point for the self-educator and anybody considering dropping out of the moneymaking racket that systematized education has become. I look forward to connecting with more autodidacts as I "follow the rabbit trail."

Let me preface this review, by stating that, I have been an avid follower of the UnCollege movement for well over a year now, so most of the information I read in this book, felt repetitive. I had the same quips with Blake Boles' Better Than College. However, for the Average Joe, most of the information may be relatively new.I felt that the information was somewhat useful, but didn't go that extra mile, in really impressing me as the reader. It was sprinkled with "Hacks of the Day", actionable tips on improving one's life. The quality of the writing felt average, at best, though this could be to make the book more approachable and understandable by the casual reader. The diction was lacking, so was the grammar. The book, as a whole, left me feeling that there was something I wasn't getting. One suggestion would have been to elaborate more on how someone with zero experience, zero accomplishments, zero community, can get off the ground. Dale constantly asserts his pathos(credibility), but doesn't explain how he was able to do so; he simply says that "I was born this way", or that he was "naturally talented" in certain areas that allowed him to succeed. That's great, but for someone who's looking to do this at the age of 18, 40, etc. Dale leaves no clues as to how he established himself, over the past 6 years.If you haven't followed the whole UnCollege movement, it is a decent read, but as a whole, I felt that the Education of Millionaires was well written and taught me a lot more.Anyhow, I wish Dale the best on his journey.

I started reading this because I have 4 children at all different levels in their life. My second oldest is in college and I'm working on ways to make his degree coming worth more. My personal course was dropping out of college early and having my own education but I felt I may have taken the hard way and didn't want them to have to take that route. Recently though I've been very creative with their learning and it brought me back to thinking my path was successful so why not use it for there's. Reading this book made me completely confident in that idea. Other than the one son that wants to be a doctor (no ideas or desire to hack that one) the others are going to use creative ways to get ahead and this book have me a lot of GREAT ideas to work with.

There are quite a few good "hacks" mentioned in this book. Although I can understand how someone can use this information, I do believe that an introvert will find it very hard to apply some of the suggestions in this book - such as taking people out for coffee and learning from them.Mr. Stephens also mentions interning. I don't see how this is possible if you aren't in college since all the internship programs is found require applicants to be enrolled in a four year course.One thing bugged me was that almost all of the examples that is found in the book, even Mr. Stephens's own example, used contacts and connections that they made in their time at a university or college (before they dropped out). How does one make these connections/contacts if they completely skip college? I have no idea.Overall, there is some useful information on this book that can be easily applied. There are some that are a bit harder to apply. There are some that, as far as I have researched, are almost impossible.I would recommend students graduating from high school to read this book, just to get another viewpoint on higher education.

It was a gift for my sister. she LOVES it!

I liked in it general, but I thought it could have been more complete. Not quite enough information.

I found this book very helpful - both as an artist framing my own work and a consumer, having pictures professionally framed. It helps to understand what is available with all the various options. Wonderful tips.

I was disappointed in this book. It refers to how to matte a canvas but never actually shows how to do it.

On very short notice, I was called to officiate a wedding for my best friend and immediately panicked. I was so touched and honored that the pressure to write a script as moving and beautiful as their relationship overwhelmed me. I would recommend this book to anyone faced with the challenge of performing a wedding, regardless of denomination or setting. In fact, I would recommend that it is the first thing you read because a lot of my other research was discarded for the more concise and practical guidance offered in this book.It helped me brainstorm parts of the couple's relationship that I felt unique to them and that I wanted to highlight throughout their ceremony. I learned the various components and sequences of modern weddings, including various unity rituals [my couple went with handfasting] and opening and closing prayers. It offered a wide range of verbiage so you could make the vows customized and contemporary or traditional ("I do thee wed"). It even offers tips for nontraditional wedding parties that may be missing a father or mother of the bride to walk her/him down the aisle, which I appreciated.I ended up receiving so many compliments on the flow and beauty of the script and how well it fit the bride and groom that I wasn't just relieved after the ceremony, I felt like a card-carrying professional. It is now several months post-wedding and I was asked by the bride for the full script because it was one of her favorite parts of her wedding day. Invaluable resource for sacred and secular weddings. Thank heavens I found it!I was asked on very short notice to officiate for some friends, and after the immediate feeling of being honored, I panicked. Thank goodness I found JP's book, and was able to put a ceremony together that honored my friends' wishes, and made sense. I got a lot of compliments, even from the bride's uncle! The book includes very practical tips, checklists, orders of service, samples of sacred and secular vows, prayers, blessings, and even possible introductions of the different elements of a ceremony. At one point when I needed help, I was able to contact JP, and he responded quickly and was so much help that he made me feel much more at ease right away. Absolutely perfect. I was asked to officiated my nephew’s wedding and had NO idea where to start. I followed the book pretty much the whole way. When I met with the couple, I created an outline for them from the suggestions in the book and they chose options and specified from there.I was so much less nervous with this as a resource and with 200 people in attendance, it turned out to be arguably one of the most beautiful weddings I had ever seen. How To Officiate A Non-Denominational Wedding CeremonyI am an experienced presider at weddings, and I'm married to another experienced wedding presider. If you've never presided before at a wedding, look no further for your complete how-to guide. I say this for two reasons: First, Mr. Reynolds has captured all the elements of being a successful presider (he must be a very successful presider himself). Second, he has captured it all in a most readable and enjoyable style. When creating a ceremony with couples, I always try to make it personal to them and incorporate their style(s) and wishes. Mr. Reynolds has shown how to do this, without having to start from the familiar, traditional design. I can say from my experience that the "bonus" sections at the end will be a huge help to the inexperienced presider. I humbly admit that I'll consult this fantastic book the next time I plan a wedding - high praise from someone who's pretty sure he does a great job already!

Even is I have been a JP for many years I truly enjoy JP's book and his words within it. Well worth it and love the Wedding Ceremony Podcast's that JP and Clint Hufft do very week. I never miss them and they keep me energized.

This is an outstanding book if you're going to officiate a wedding. Loaded with scripts and everything you'll need. I do Google searches for good material and advice, yet I always come back to this book. Now I see a new edition just came out this month (May 2017). Very easy reading. Full of warm, practical information. This is a "must have" book if you'll be doing a wedding.

The reason for the rating is the wide range of options Reynolds provides. He discusses how and why couples would want certain kinds of variations -- traditional, spiritual, neither -- and provides some proposed language to use. He also wisely suggests discussing these with the couple (I encouraged my couple to obtain and read the book, as well), who of course will control the kind of ceremony they want. This was a very useful book, especially for the price.

I love the artwork done on movie posters from the past. This book is a visual treat, and a lot of fun. I don't watch a lot of TV, but when I do, I'm usually watching Turner Classic Movies. Thank you, Mr. DeLong, for a delightful collection. I enjoyed it so much, that I immediately got the next two volumes. I can't recommend this highly enough, especially if you're a classic film fan.

Basically, this is a book of movie posters. I have the Kindle edition, so it was in black-and-white, but the detail is good and I enjoyed looking at the posters. There are two more books available in the series. So, the book was well-executed, but didn't have much plot.

This book is packed with pictures of posters from early 1910's to 1960's. They show a variety of types of movies and actors and actresses. I found it interesting to see the art work, the movies, and culture change as the decades went by.

I can imagine my parents standing in front of old movie theater and seeing these same posters and I am happy that I too can go back and see what their movies looked like

fans of classic movies will get a kick out of this book. Lots of movie posters from the 1930's and 1940's, an interesting look back at the past (for the 30 minutes or so that it lasts)

The posters themselves are stunning, but it would have been interesting to have at least a few lines of background information on the films, especially the ones that I'd never heard of.

A fascinating exploration into movie poster evolution.

Enjoyed seeing the different movies made by the stars from years ago. Found the pictures interesting. Liked going down memory lane.

I read this while vacationing in Colombia and found it quite enlightening. Having had three family members who suffered from Altzheimers disease, I also found the weaving of memory loss into the tapestry of the book quite powerful.

This book was well written and especially entertaining for a person interested in life along Colombia's Magdalena River. Four stars is a generous rating because a person not interested in the region where the story is set might find the book boring and feel that it hops too much from point to point. The ending was very good, however, and it really pulled the story together, making it an arguably four-star story.

As one reads this book, a love of Colombia and an understanding of it's history shines through. I liked how Jacobs develops the theme of memory throughout the book. The vignettes of people and places are jewels

I first came across Michael Jacobs in his "Andes" which was excellent too. You come away from the book not only getting a real feel for Colombia (and I lived there for 7 years so feel I can express an opinion on this) but feeling you have made a friend in Michael.

the author comes across as a self-centered snob, with his influential friends, his brother doing important things in Brussels/Strasbourg and the war-time stories of his dad
