Ms.David's recipes are terrific, straightforward, but not necessarily the best place for novices to start. Get a little time on the cutting board and behind the stove and then take this on.

This is the kind of cookbook that lures you into sitting down and reading it like a novel: it is endlessly fascinating and entertaining. By the time I'd finished reading it, the book was littered with post-it notes, marking dishes that I wanted to try. It's also suited to its purpose and provides clear instructions for recipes, along with helpful suggestions. Every recipe that I've tried has worked and several will become staples. I didn't expect less as I've had Elizabeth David's book on bread for years and, after much use, it looks a bit shabby these days. I recommend this wonderful cookbook...and all of the other Elizabeth David books as well. You won't regret it.

I like both Elizabeth David's recipes and her commentary. I read her recipe or comments on anything I am going to make whether I am using her particular version or another source. She has a great practical and asthetic approach that somehow makes sense. I think it no wonder that so many great cooking authors refer to her as an important source of inspiration. This book is more a a true cookbook than many of her other books which have more the feel of an encyclopedia of cooking.

This is a lovely book with tasteful photographs of prepared recipes, markets, and produce as well as several photos of David herself. Each chapter begins with one or two short essays written by David for periodicals or her cookbooks. Her descriptions of the food and the places where they originate are evocative and intimate. You will find yourself pining to be in the markets, villas, and restaurants that she recounts.Many of the recipes are simple and made with readily available ingredients. Butter and cream play a strong supporting role in many recipes, but they look satisfying and use many other wholesome whole food ingredients. This is cooking from scratch, meant to be savored--from the selection of ingredients, to the preparation of the dish, to the final enjoyment of a shared meal--without being fussy or stuffy.Not all recipes have ingredient lists, instead the ingredients are simply noted (in bold) within the directions. This may be irksome to some. On the other hand, the personal notes and descriptions preceding many of the recipes are a bonus.

I have admired Elizabeth David's recipes and prose for a long time. I first discovered her when I was living in England. She started out with a small book published shortly after World War 11 when England was still living with severe rationing. This new book is very different from her other works. They were very simple, recipes written one after the other, no pictures of the food. I don't know what she would have thought of this book, so beautiful but also very evocative of her, and her style. I think anyone who admires her recipes and comments in the book should definitely read her biography "Elizbeth David" by Lisa Chaney. She lived an incredible life. And anyone interested in cooking and adventure and travel would also like the neat little book "An Omelet and a Glass of Wine". Read it first and you will want to know more about her. I bought all three from Amazon.

This is a beautiful book, and it was a terrific value. We were very pleased with the service and quality.

This book is beautiful, educational, and the cover and binding are extra well made. It just makes you want to try the dishes of good food simply cooked and presented with the best ways to season and enjoy the food. You can't go wrong. This is my second Elizabeth David Book, as I also purchased Elizabeth David on Vegetables. Now I want all of her books! I wish I had been introduced to them a long time ago. They will definitely always be relevant.

Finally, an Elizabeth David book done RIGHT! I did not know that it was a compilation until I got it. I own a few of David's books, so I recognized a few of the recipes. However, with this book being a hardcover, large, and with color pictures as well, it's almost an embarrassement of riches. I highly recommend it.

This is a good solid sourcebook for the 1920s Call of Cthulhu game- or any game set in New York City around that time. It has a number of maps and guides to boroughs and neighborhoods, political and historical data, and a large number of non-player characters, shops, museums, and other fun stuff to visit.Secrets of New York also includes two mini-scenarios, historical documents and photographs .I do wish they had included a page reference to some of the characters & places used in the scenarios.

As a new Yorker I bought this book as a reference for a COC campaign. Unfortunately its not. The artwork is poor handouts are fair not great and to cut them out destroys the book. If you wish a COC games in NYC just buy a good map and go from there.

If you need a setting in NY for ANY game system this is the book for you. CofC is the best for local "flavor" and locations.

First off, I enjoyed reading this book. The history of the city tinged with Mythos lore made for a fun evening diversion. My practical use for the book in the game was more indirect, however.I was running the players through "Look to the Future" in Shadows of Yog-Sothoth (which takes place in New York). I found this book to be extremely helpful in setting the mood for that chapter of the campaign. The characters wanted to know where hotels, restaurants, etc. were, and Secrets of New York delivered.I haven't had the chance to run either scenario, but they both look promising.I would certainly recommend this book to any Keeper.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a very engaging and entertaining account of extreme family dysfunction. Someone in my book club chose the book; I was unpredared for the bizarre behavior I would encounter in this autobiographical novel.The title captured my attention because running with scissors and other hazardous behaviors were strictly forbidden when I was growing up. At first it seemed that absolutely nothing was forbidden in this family. As the story unfolds a few seemingly incomprehensible rules are revealed. The reason for these rules becomes apparent near the end of the book.Authors of autobiographical novels about family dysfunction rarely avoid the "poor me" syndrome. The author describes, but does not judge the family he grew up in.This book demands that the reader suspend disbelief in order to continue; from my point of view, doing so was well worth the effort.

Suffering served as entertainment: to me, it takes a real writer to make dark things hilarious. Everyone can write a heart-wrenching novel about loss and grief, bipolar parents, abusive shrinks, etc.. But only someone really smart and funny can make such a delightful read out of it, and magnify it into a study of white suburban America's sugarcoated filthy underside.

Something I felt was missing in this memoir though it was funny and crazy. I felt it was such a different kind of read for me and I enjoyed it so much.Ok so I read the book and I was laughing so hard and thought to myself that I have to watch the movie and the movie sucked big time.Ok and now as for the book, I have to say Auggie had one of the most stangest childhood I have ever read about and he was surrounded by some pretty colorful characters.There were times I was laughing out pretty loud and at times I sadly went "oh dear" (his sexual experiences etc) Sometimes I really wondered about lifestory while I commuted to work. SOme of the scenes were rather graphic and pedophilic undercurrents in the network of the family was disturbing.Auggie's mother is a poet (mind you also with mental illnesses) and his father is a teacher/professor who is an alocoholic and boy do they fight. And their son, the author, is sent to live with his mother's therapist, Dr Finch.Dr Finch and his family are really a mix of hippies and oddballs and other disturbing elements. But they are endearing too. Well, everyone is entitled to their beliefs and practices and so are the Finches.And so his quirky stories begin. This is not a typical memoir. The author includes all the ugly stuff in it as wellWhat I loved about this book:The author never makes himself look like a victim or survivor. He tells everything as it and how he constantly tried to make sense and struggle with growing up.I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a different memoir to read!

Memoir, even a few of the greatest examples in the genre, can sometimes fall short of engrossing, may crawl along as the author drags readers through events that fail to universally engage.This is NOT the case with Burroughs's work.This book never slows down, and you won't want it to. This is a you'll-lose-sleep-to-finish-it-in-one-setting kind of book.The language, subject-matter, and overall tone are explicit - properly so, as this boy's childhood was explicit. The title says it all; Augusten ran, break-neck, through a psych ward of formative years, wielding a plethora of too-sharp, age-inappropriate objects along the way.If you're easily offended, you might want to skip this one.Otherwise, buy it, settle in when you have plenty of time, and hold on tight.

I chose this book because it was referenced in another book that I loved (E-squared); I learned that Augusten Burroughs transformed his life from that of a skid row alcoholic to a best selling author, and I wanted to read his first successful book. When viewed through the lens of his transformation, this is probably a five star rating, but it was a little too weird for me. I read the entire book in less than 24 hours, but on several occasions I needed a break from the overwhelming depravity that he described. I am no stranger to mental illness and the chaos that it creates, but in this memoir, there were nearly no normal characters to act as reference points. I do recommend the book, and I can understand how it spent so many months on the best seller list, but I came away feeling so wonderfully average, and for the first time it was a huge positive thing.

If one is interseted in reading about a household of mentally ill people and abused children you may like this book. I occasionally read true crime stories but this not one with it's described in detail vulgarity. I got 50% through the book and just couldn't take anymore. It is the story of a truley twisted "Psychiatrist" and the vulgar beliefs he instills and demonstrates for his and other children. Could not find any redemming qualities. I rarley leave a book unfinished but this one literally made me nauseous.

I did enjoy reading this book! I read it pretty quickly and the plot was really unexpected, different than anything I have ever read. The reviews I had read before choosing this book spoke about vulgarity and explicit content, and the novel definitely has both of those! It's one of those situations where you want to stop because it feels wrong but you can't because it's so interesting. If you become uncomfortable easily, I probably wouldn't read this one. Try and keep an open mind while you read and you will enjoy the honesty and vulnerability the author offers.

I understand that Chinese students drill the details of their 2000+ year history extensively in school. Although I would think this could be a good "refresher" (so many names and years and this book hits the "big things"), I doubt that anyone who attended school in China is the intended audience.For someone like me, with fairly minimal knowledge or understanding of Chinese history pre-20th century, this series is great. The first book illustrated the concepts and historical periods very clearly, clearly enough that I could remember a lot of it months later--something that wasn't true after reading an ancient Chinese history book.This one is no exception, but is in a way, an even more interesting period of time since some of the great Chinese literature and philosophy comes from this period (Romance of Three Kingdoms, for example, is right here.) The first book--at least the edition I bought--was 8 1/2" x 11. So it was a surprise to see this one in a much smaller format, 6 x 9.. I wondered if it would be able to present the drawings and information in as much detail as the earlier one.To my surprise, opening and reading it, I didn't notice any real differences. There were still all the same kinds of drawings, still large and easy to see and all the writing was still large and easy to read. The organization of the information and the thought and judgement put into what to include and what to leave out is still excellent overall. I felt I learned a lot and would really put the upper age limit as "adult" given the complexity of information. It'll be great when the entire series is complete. Definitely enjoyed these first two and am looking forward to Vol 3 in April. Very helpful.

I recommend to anyone wanting an encapsulated overview of Chinese history. Entertaining and informative with excellent visuals. Highly recommended. Fab.

This is a fantastic book series based on a great idea. While the idea of turning history into a "comic-book" like format is not novel, the execution and subject matter choice here make it a singular achievement. Through a series of volumes, the author Jing Liu covers various parts of Chinese History.They recommend this for children in grades 6-12, yet I feel like just about anybody could learn a lot from reading these books. Because volume two covers a particularly complicated period of Chinese history it can at times be a little bit difficult to follow. The author has designed this text so that each section includes an overview before key historical figures are put into that context. So even if you don't get it all the first go, you can always refer back to his timelines and overviews to get a sense of the context of what you are reading.The art is in black and white and is not meant to be flashy. It is designed to keep your interest, which I think it does incredibly well.CONCLUSIONThis book has really inspired me to learn more about Chinese history. I think it will do the same for all readers, and is a fantastic aid for teachers and parents trying to get younger people interested in the topic.

Cool and innovative way to teach history and culture. The comic book is a great medium to have little people be engaged with history of the Chinese People. The book has some great pictures with important comparisons in a comic book form. it is all black and white, so that is one note, but it reads well and still generated interest among both of my kids. The style and length of the comic book style writing leads more to short samples of reading instead of a sit down for a day and read the whole thing. This aok because there are many stopping points where kids can engage , pause, re-engage and keep learning at their own pace or interest. For example, the Chinese new year generated a lot of interest and the kids picked it back up after a couple of weeks and dove back into it ....A great alternative to just pretty pictures and a standard history book, with great symbols and a more accessible style for younger readers.

This is a beautiful, intense graphic novel covering a very interesting period of Chinese history. The text is quite thorough and the graphic style is simple, yet effective. Choosing to present this complicated story in graphic form was a brilliant decision by the author.I'm not sure if there is another way that would communicate the history presented in this book that would appeal to me. I don't have enough of an interest in Chinese history to read a book and a film would probably include more hyperbole and fiction than would be reasonable to qualify as a "history."This is a fun and fascinating book. Although there is not much in the way of drama or action in a classic illustrated sense, it is still a great read and very illuminating for those interested in the subject matter.Best for me, I read it in one sitting.

Jing Liu's "Division to Unification in Imperial China: The Three Kingdoms to the Tang Dynasty (Understanding China Through Comics)" lives up to the "Understanding China through Comics" portion of the title. With uncluttered visuals and layout alongside clear, concise text, the reader is given glimpses into Chinese history from the three kingdoms through the Tang dynasty. Now for me, I'm not familiar with Chinese history so I can't attest to whether the writer/artist Liu is glossing over certain aspects or not, but I have the feeling that it is really just to give the reader a feel for the time period. It is more like a starter kit for Chinese history and if the reader's interest is piqued, he or she will continue to study more in depth. It does focus on military and that's to be expected but there are forays into other topics like religion. This book is only 1 volume of a 5 volume set and in reading this one volume, I am now curious to see the others.

I wish I could give this book more then 5 stars. I purchased this book about 8 months ago completely satisfied with the product, however I have noticed that not many people were satisfied with this product, but none of them gave good reasons why, I will explain to you what the formatting and organizational tools of this book looks like, so you can decide whether it's what you want or not.The way all of this content is organized is one of the reasons I love this book. It has all of the plays organized in the table of contents by each of the subjects (comedies, tradgedys, and histories) with links you can click on. When you click on one of the links of one of the plays, for example: If you click on Romeo and Juliet, you become redirected to another table of contents that organize the all the scenes in all the different kind of acts.Now the formatting is the best you can get for being displayed on the kindle. It shows the name of the person speaking and then under the name, and indented is what they say. This kind of formatting is my favorite kind of formatting I've seen so far. It makes reading a play so much easier.But what I really like is that I have all of shakespeares sonnets and plays, all on one small electric device, Instead of having it in one massive textbook.In all honesty, I wouldn't mind paying $10-20 on a collection this organized.Overall I think this is my favorite purchase so far.Please let me know if this review helped you :)

It took some digging to come up with a Kindle version of Shakespeare's Complete Works that's well-linked and has modernized spelling, but I eventually settled on this version. There's a general Table of Contents at the beginning listing every play and poem, and then each play has its own ToC, making it convenient to jump scenes. Of course, there are many free versions of Shakespeare's works online, but none I've seen have complete ToC's.The formatting is clean, and, as far as I've read, there are few typos. Well worth a few bucks to be able to find your way around in what would be several hundred pages of printed matter. Someone looking for commentary and notes should look elsewhere, though; this is just a neat presentation of the works themselves.

I am a high school English teacher looking at the different versions of classics texts available for Kindle (fire), so my review will not be for the play itself, but rather for the eBook--readability, layout, price, and other features.This is an excellent complete Shakespeare, and at $1.99, a steal. It includes all of Shakespeare's plays and poetry. There are links to each play, and from the first page of each play, links to each act and scene. When you go to the poetry section, there are links to each poem. The layout on the page is very clean. The lines are properly laid out in poetic form and there are spaces between each speaker. Unfortunately, there are no line numbers. There is no annotation in this version, but hey, it was two dollars!If you are looking for low price and readability, this is easily the best complete Shakespeare!

I recently rekindled my love for, and interest in the works of William Shakespeare when I was offered a role in a local community theater production of “Macbeth.” I decided to purchase a Kindle edition of Shakespeare’s complete works in order to research my part, memorize my lines, and simply enjoy once again the greatest words ever written in the English language…This Kindle edition of “William Shakespeare: The Complete Works” from Latus ePublishing I find especially useful because of the way it sorts Shakespeare’s plays into comedies, tragedies, and histories and all of his poems (154 sonnets and 4 longer poems) I chronological order. This edition provides a linked table of contents that allows me to access each work directly without flipping myriads of pages. I can either use a mouse or touchscreen; either works equally well.There are no footnotes or scholarly explanations of what Shakespeare meant, nor are there any illustrations. I consider this a strength of this edition. The book is set in a clear font that I find easy on my eyes.I think “William Shakespeare: The Complete Works” is an excellent book. Highly recommended.

About the Author

Gilbert Morris spent ten years as a pastor before becoming Professor of English at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkansas and earning a Ph.D. at the University of Arkansas. During the summers of 1984 and 1985, he did postgraduate work at the University of London. A prolific writer, he has had over 25 scholarly articles and 200 poems published in various periodicals, and over the past years has had more than 180 novels published, including THE HOUSE OF WINLSOW series, LIONS OF JUDAH series and CHENEY DUVALL, M.D. His family includes three grown children, and he and his wife live in Alabama.

OK, the first two books of the series weren't too bad. After that I had to delete them from my Oasis. Leah had "Soft" eyes which apparently meant to this author she was a hooker who looked at any man she thought might make her rich with lustful eyes. And her father who lived in a decent house, not a tent, was doing OK, not great but not horrible. So this guy rewrote this and said he was a drunk who lived in a tent.Made me want to say "huh"?I am sorry I bought this set of e-books. I love Bible based fiction and some of it does help me get more into things but from this point in the series forward, made me wish I had bought them one at a time so I wouldn't own the whole series never to be read. Made me understand why he only put the first book on Kindle Unlimited. If I had been able to get them with my KU Subscription, I would have stopped before reading the rest of this one and stopped reading any of the rest of them.

This is the story of Jacob and Esau who were so different from each other, and Jacob wanted the birthright while Esau did not care much for it. But Esau was disappointed and angry that Jacob got the blessing from his father Isaac instead of him. So Jacob had to flee for his life and settled in a town with Laban who had two daughters Rachel and Leah, very interesting story.

This is a wonderful continuation of the lineage and legacy of Noah, Abraham, Isaac and now Jacob (Isaac). To see the lives of these men fleshed out gives new meaning to the lives they lived to know and honor the one true God. Their struggles were real, their faith stretched and their hope for the future blossomed in light of their walk with God.

This author has a way of bringing Biblical characters and events to life in an exciting way. Once I read the first in the Lions of Judah series, I had to read each of them - and they all were true to scripture, with exciting events and characters that might have actually occurred in the real lives of the people of whom he wrote. An extremely enjoyable reading experience for anyone who loves to read the Bible.

It took me months to reach the middle of the book. I just didn't want to pick it up. Maybe I've heard the story too often or maybe it just didn't catch/keep my attention. However, once the story shifted to Dinah, I finished it the same day. I really enjoyed reading about Dinah and what 'could have happened'. It was beautiful love story with a sweet ending.

Looking forward to reading Book 4. The author does a great job describing everything. He makes you feel like you are there too.

Book #3 was excellent! The sharp pictures painted by Gilbert Morris" words made me feel like the scenes were happening right in front of me. I enjoyed the parallel stories of Jacob"s patience and His obedience to God along with the love story of Dinah and Demetrius. I would recommend this book and the entire series to everyone.

Gilbert's ability to create a captivating tale based on scripture is incredible. The story brings the characters to life and they draw you into the story. Great read.

The book lived up to Art’s recommendation and then some.The kernel of Strategy that Art referred to is a great reason to read the book, even if that’s all you get out of it. Here’s Rumelt’s description of the kernel.“A good strategy has an essential logical structure that I call the kernel. The kernel of a strategy contains three elements: a diagnosis, a guiding policy, and coherent action. The guiding policy specifies the approach to dealing with the obstacles called out in the diagnosis. It is like a signpost, marking the direction forward but not defining the details of the trip. The book follows this pattern, through Chapter 6, at least. Then somewhat unexpectedly, the book turns from `straight-shooting' business strategy to theoretical concepts and meandering stories, leaving the reader wondering, `where exactly this book is headed'.On the positive side, the book is worth its purchase price for the clarity Rumelt offers on how to create good strategy. He uses the `kernel' method emphasizing the need to identify the structure of a current business challenge, choosing a `guiding policy' for dealing with the challenge, and lastly designing a series of actions or resource allocations in order to implement the `guiding policy'. With his solid advice and focus on action items as the underlying mechanism for effective business strategy, it begs the question in today's market, `how can so many of today's corporations issue strategies that are `fluff' and no action. Rumelt hits the nail on the head with the majority of the examples he uses, one of which, after peeling away the layers of a corporate bank's `strategy' the core message is a bank exists to be a bank. Rumelt uses the bank example to show what strategy is not. Strategy is not a goal setting, is not a budget and is not a laundry list of lofty desirable outcomes. Good strategy is specific and action-oriented.In the same vein, another positive point for the `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' content is that Rumelt identifies the core element to initiating a good strategy: "discovering the critical factors in a situation" and creating a set of actions to deal with the situation. The emphasis on taking action is a key component of the book. It is often missing in the cultural jargon and `fluff' that other strategic books espouse. In this book, strategy is not disguised as a company's mission and/or values. Additionally, Rumelt highlights that a coherent strategy does not consist of companies with too many objectives; as this ultimately results in a loss of focus.On the other side of the coin, after Chapter 6 the reader will need to have patience to work through the concepts and examples Rumelt presents. It would be most beneficial if the reader is already well-versed in management strategy and/or has years of on the job experience in order to best apply and thoroughly understand his examples on proximate objectives, chain-link systems and inertia and entropy. The examples come more from his personal consulting experiences and the demonstrative stories are not as direct and to the point as the examples in his first few chapters. The overarching concepts are relevant to strategy, but again unless the reader is well-versed in management strategy the application or replication of these concepts may prove difficult.Overall, `Good Strategy Bad Strategy' is a recommended read for those interested in business strategy. The no-nonsense approach is refreshing and there are definite `pearls' of strategic wisdom in the book. There are a myriad of examples from history and business cases in which Rumelt's strategic advice draws upon. However, the reader should keep in mind that the later sections of the book are lackluster compared to the first few chapters. With that said, the book should still be given a chance and is worth its investment. All in all, the book is a `mixed bag', but take a chance and see for yourself.

I'm an elementary school ESOL teacher. My own 4th grade child has moderate auditory processing and working memory challenges.Right now, I'm using this book at home to help my 4th grader. Last spring the math specialist was trying to drill her on the multiplication tables by rote memory -- and it just wasn't happening. In fact, she ended up with a huge case of failure-induced math anxiety. My concern was that I wanted her to have a stronger conceptual understanding of multiplication, not just to spit out memorized math facts. ...so I bought this book for use at home.In the past 3 weeks (just prior to and at the beginning of the school year), we've been working through the first set of conversations, drawing activities, and games in this book. Yesterday, as we were talking about the game (from the book) we've been playing, I commented to my child, "See, math isn't so bad." (She had been so anxious about going back to school this year and taking math.) She responded, "Mom, that game isn't math. It's fun!" Hmmmmmmm.....:)The fewer, deeper visually-oriented activities -- such as the pattern coloring and analyses activity (which we also invited her 7th grade sister to do as part of the fun) -- has prepared my 4th grader well. It's amazing to see. She's more fluent in identifying composite and prime numbers and their factors. She's been zipping through her multiplication homework each night so we get to the games from this book. When she gets stuck, I've been having her use some of the visual strategies emphasized in the book along with the other items in her growing strategy toolkit.More activities in an education book can be overwhelming and sometimes, not as useful. Fewer, deeper games around Big Ideas can have a positive effect on conceptual understanding. This book has a great set of deep, visually-engaging approaches to mathematical understanding. I'm looking forward to the Grade 7 book and plan on buying it to use with my older child. One suggestion: Consider some kind of grouping discount (for purchases of multiple books in this set) for those of us who'd like to buy these books for home use each year.In terms of my ESOL teacher job: My focus is on teaching my students at school how to use language to learn content. I can see great promise for this book with my multilingual learners as well

This book is amazing for non-mathematical parents like myself. I think I have learned as much as my child. Having spent 41 years as a communication and language arts teacher, math was a subject I avoided. My 9 year old really enjoys the perceptual and visual challenges this program provides. I do wish it offered an answer guide for parents and perhaps DVD's of its core concepts. I know the answers are to be discovered by the students however, if there is a struggle it can be hard to help walk them through it. However, it has caused me to work through the problems myself using Google and YouTube, so in the end it has still been helpful.

I’m certain many of these tasks could be used in multiple grade levels. Some really intriguing math tasks that offer entry points for students at all levels.

He is a student of rats -- he even spent time living in a rat-infested barn to understand rats and their habits better.New York CIty probably has the worst rat and mouse problems in the country, and to increase the skills of their inspectors and private exterminators they started a yearly Rat Academy, which Corrigan teaches. What better endorsement would you need?This book is full of tips and principles that will be useful not just to professionals but also to homeowners (because if you have rats, especially, you will want to get rid of them even more than your exterminator wants to get rid of them). Read this book and you will know if your exterminator is doing a good job, and you can give some gentle advice -- or get rid of them -- if they're not.To put it another way, rats are probably the toughest problem that exterminators face, and with this book you will greatly increase the odds of a permanent solution.While it doesn't come out in the book Corrigan is also very funny -- just watch some of his youtube videos. The videos are no substitute for the book, though.
